What a great story. The research is my favorite part of buying and selling. When I can get stuck into the internet and get somewhere that tingles my spidey senses, it’s even more exciting. Well done 👍
Well done Chris, hats off to you on the reserch completed by you on this , thats some story behind this case , wishing you all the very best on this buddy .
There is a bigger story about Rama V, a past King who is still very much respected today. He was aware that the British controlled one side of Thailand (Burma, India etc) and the French the other side (Vietnam, Lao) and realised that he had to maintain Siam (now Thailand) as independent. That's one of the reasons he went to meet heads of state in Russia, Italy and so forth. He persuaded them to diplomatically inform both France and Great Britain that any invasion of Siam would be unacceptable. Rama V cleverly allowed both sides into the country to trade. Britain's was famously to trade in the teak through the East India Company. The French helped Siam to draw up laws for the country and even today Thai law students often study law at the Sorbonne because of the connection between Thai and French law. Finally, Rama V's son studied at a prestigious Russian military academy and married a Russian woman which I guess was all part of the arrangement made in 1897, the year of the Grand Tour. Lots of quirky history here David. (PS> I live in Thailand and run AseaAntiques)
Fascinating. I would suggest that the size of the silver case is more suitable for cheroots than cigarettes; it seems too small for cigars, although panatellas might fit.
Wikipedia: The King Chulalongkorn Memorial Building (Thai: พระบรมราชานุสรณ์พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว) is a Thai pavilion (Sala Thai) in Utanede, Sweden (part of the Ragunda Municipality) built to commemorate the 1897 visit of King Chulalongkorn of Thailand to the town. The construction of the building started in August 1997 and it was inaugurated on July 19, 1998, at the 101 anniversary of King Chulalongkorn's visit. The building is in the style of a royal Thai pavilion (prasat) with a surface of ten by ten meters and a height of 28 meters. The roof is supported by 24 pillars in white concrete around the building with its four entrances. The pavilion is adorned with gold leaf ornamentation with a value of three million Swedish kronor or 14 million Thai baht.
just came to watch this after seeing the sale ! seems to me like he did all of the work and the auction house took 25% of the profit ! my real thoughts about auction houses might not be able to be said on here, but in short they do very little research and just sell stuff as quick as possible to turn over a fast buck, most is junk house clearance
A great story and object. There is one piece of information missing and that is what did Christian pay to purchase it from the ebay auction? Thanks for posting.
There are parallels with the same sort of gifts given out by Czar Nicholas III when he visited Europe. Mostly he gave out gold tie pins, but cigarette cases were a common gift. The King of Siam must of been aware of this. Its very fabergé, portrait in a oval, inscriptions, and large enamel work pictorial image. All common on russian imperial cigarette cases...
@@DavidHarperAntiquesWatched the whole video but was so interested in the story I totally missed what he paid for it. Well done Christian you worked hard for your final price. From Northern Ireland
Much has been made of finding this item on eBay, researching and buying believing it had much value.i found it odd the owner was not asked nor volunteered the amount he paid.i was intrigued so tried to find out. No good looking on eBay as sales disappear after a month but they do not disappear from Google. He was vague about the eBay description cigar or cigarette case possibly silver. I searched Google for all combinations. I found the RUclips video but no eBay sale which is odd. Any sale however old should have appeared.
Mmmmm I worked as a researcher and think I have already covered all the ground. It would have been normal to provide the amount paid after all the thrust was that the owner had made a financial killing. Most people would be proud to advertise just how much that was. Rather than skirt the point I made why not just provide a link to the eBay sale?
David Elstob genuine guy.Fair and honest. All you want.
That's brilliant Christian. Delighted for you. What a story.
I live in Thailand... this would/should be in the national museum. King Rama V is still highly revered.
Hoping it might work its way back there
