Limbo has been a widely misunderstood Warframe, from his initial release to present. Limbo is an oddity that isn't from our plane of existance, an interdimensional rift walker capable of manipulating his surroundings. So today let's take a dive into the Rift Plane and see what Limbo is all about.

I want to give a VERY special Thank You to N7Cadaverous for teaching me how to play Limbo and giving me a better understanding about him, I also want to give shoutouts to Spooki, Bryan and Rexq8 for giving me further insights on Limbo, thank you fellas as this video wouldn't have been possible without you!
Also want to mention that During 2014 the information on Limbo was pretty scarce as there were only general guides and negativity about the trolls, I feel like I did miss something significant with Limbo during his release so if you do notice something substantial was missed, then please do let me know and I'll add it to the pinned comment. And finally, Duviri didn't change Limbo directly but if he does end up useful for the new content then other creators will make a vid about it.

There are some other unique interactions that Limbo has that no other frame does. For instance you can use his ultimate to lock down an area you know team mates won't actively use. Banish can be used for isolating and assassinating key targets so friendlies can focus elsewhere. Mods like life-strike can make him self-sustain because the enemy has no way to fight back and you have all the time in the world to use it as you see fit. Banish knockdown can also be used tactically. Think of it like an alternate take on a duelist in that sense, you exploit their weakness and buff your strengths and in the duels he has, he is unmatched in power.
Limbo has the highest skill ceiling in the game I think and while I do think he could use small touch ups here and there, in the right hands he can be a decent Warframe. The key of using Limbo is to have an intriquite understanding of his abilities, mechanics and how they affect yourself, teammates and enemies alike. The best way to understand his impact to the team is to understanding the Rift-mecehanic. As NovaUmbral mentioned, Banish isolates enemies into the Rift. This is how Limbo should be used, as someone who isolates. So for example in survival, go to places where your teammates don't go. You'll still contribute at max value while not interrupting teammates. He is the most complex Warframe that requires, thematically, good mathematical skills and space awareness.

      1. BRUH! Ty so much! Not a limbo main but I do thoroughly enjoy him. I struggled with Rift surge to the point of replacing it with Yareli spinning blades (it's super effective) on most of my builds. Gonna go try right surging al as soon as I get off work in not 2 hours.
      2. Didn't see it in the vid: use Yareli spinning blades, rift Walk, laugh but don't pee on yourself. Adding power strength helps with higher level mobs. Approach nullifiers slowly to kill.
      3. Max range limbo with high duration can lock out index enemies from scoring, easy 3 round no score for the nightwave.

1- Use banish to make the enemies leave the rift instead of holding down the ability.
2- Cataclysm > Rift surge > Disable Cataclysm = a banish with the size of the cataclysm
3- with 200% casting speed, you can cast the 2- setup before a nullifier disables the cataclysm, even if there is a nullifier in the range of cataclysm

You can also give Limbo silence as well, not only do you get another layer of cc, eximus units cannot trigger abilities, you still have to worry about them but not as much, this makes the nullifier the only big treat you have, but as long as you dont have to kill enemis you can get around this, in most missions there is a enemy cap and if you dont kill anyone, the nullifiers cant spawn, therefore it is ggs for all of you (but I may be wrong).

You missed 2 small QoL facts but asides from that 10/10 video. Facts: 1 Banish pushes enemies out of limbos CURRENT plane of existence. Meaning you can selectively push some enemies from the rift back into reality if need be. 2 Rift surge it's self can also be spread by killing enemies. A bit different than infinite banish by holding 1 (which I never knew about until now!) But it's another option.
Thank you so much for this video.

Yeah the downside to killing a rift surge enemy is
The surge will spread but the enemy that has been inflicted by the surge won't be dragged into the rift until a banished enemy that has rift surge gets close enough to rebanish them back in
(The upside is it still does boost the rift torrent argument regardless if the surged enemy is in the rift or not)

As a Limbo main I’m really glad I saw this video because I feel bad for the players who were trolled by the limbos before and even when I first started playing him, people in pubs were afraid that I would troll them as well. I always try to be considerate of other players when I play him because I know his abilities are not easy to play with it for other players. I also was doubting his usage in the game as well. I never thought he couldn’t be used but I know if used him how other players would be affected but after seeing this not only did I learn a couple things about him but it honestly reignited the flame I had for him when I first started playing him so I thank you for that.
P.S I did not know rift torrent scaled off of power strength, I wished I figure that out on my own because I always thought that limbo needed a way to damage enemies and I thought rift torrent was just a small bandaid to that problem.

As an Limbo main for the last 4+ years, I’m glad to hear you took the time to learn how to use him and learned just how fun he can be to play.
Personally, Limbo has probably one of the highest skill Ceilings in the game. Making it so the more you know how to play him the harder it is for DE to nerf him for you. In my own experience I play limbo a lot in public so I don’t actually use rift surge that much and replace it. With my Own ranking of his abilities being:
    1. *Passive* - if you git gud with it you essentially unlock ultra instinct and are essentially immortal. Combo this with magnus lockdown and rolling gaurd and you can bunker buster nullified bubbles (by op dash on rim of bubble to lockdown, return to limbo then dash into bubble to trigger invulnerability and unload into nullifiers head) or eximus to name an few.
    2. *stasis*
    3. *banish* - good for multiple types of defense targets
    4. *cataclysm* - best to run min range max duration since the bubble is so small that it stops nullifiers and eximus with guns from getting close enough to pop it.
    5. *rift torrent* - definitely good in solo play but not so much in public due angering other players and how people will probably kill targets before they get close enough to the trap.
So I have current replaced it with stynax’s helmith which removes all defenses with +200% (which you can get even with min range max duration build with shards) power strength even through demolyst bubbles and active overgaurd. Turning limbo into an invincible tank buster for demolyst, eximus, acolytes, tanky high level enemies, thrax, some steel path bosses and relay warframe junctions, etc.
Oberon's smite can be good chip damage and cc while in relative safety if someone doesn’t have stynax...
And honestly, the weapons meta generally nerfed the power of most warframe abilities besides limbo. Since in my own experience it’s pretty easy to use an weapon that can either one shot head shot lvl 10k demolyst or does damage cap with an large aoe and nuke an room as limbo before an Mesa or sayrn can ramp up their meta ability to do the same.
And don’t even get me started on RJ crew mates and/or kahl and how they can trivialize things for limbo even more.

Limbo is easy, finding BAD Limbo players are easier. I refuse to play with a Limbo cause they fuck my setup 99 times out of a 100. And that 1 of the 100 that I don't mind Limbo in a pug are the rare good Limbo player that just don't stasis then afk and run around only to die. I do check the progress chart and again most of the time the Limbo player will have almost no kills cause they just hide in their bubble and get downed by an eximus that wanders in cause they were expecting to hide in the bubble and get a carry they didn't bring a proper weapon.

The problem I have with Limbo is, it's difficult to know which enemies are on the same plane as you. You try to shoot an enemy and it does nothing because you are in the rift and the enemy isn't. Also, the colour change of the screen when you are in the rift seems a bit to subtle to me. Yeah, that's the big reason why I don't really play Limbo. Even with just casual observation my eyes can't really tell the difference. Plus, I have glaucoma so my eyes are especially jacked up. The cel shaded sort of effect is pretty, yeah, but when everything is flying all over the screen I'm focusing more on the enemies and less on everything else. I can lose track pretty easily. Also, that little black energy effect that shows who is in the Rift is WAY too subtle for me to even register that it's usually present. I will tip my hat to the people who play him well. At least in my book they deserve some respect for taking his kit and really putting in the practice in learning it. I will say though, I've been lucky, judging by some other comments, that I never got grouped with a troll Limbo. So, thank the Warframe gods for that?

The original rift effects were quite obvious. The enemy was engulfed in huge white flames. It made them look like phantom monsters. This was fine for 1 enemy but when its a whole bunch, you see nothing but white flames on screen. DE over nerfed it. Now you'll barely notice the tiny flames on the enemy's feet.

I've been pretty actively playing Limbo since the start and you made a really nice up to date guide. And it's currently so SO much better and dynamic to use than in the beginning. But not for all, as you said. When I take a while with other frames, I need a bit of adjusting when I return to using Limbo. The mindset is that much different. And I've given up using him in public groups. You need an understanding of Limbo, and preferably the playstyle of the player playing it themselves to comfortably play alongside them. Being aware is also damn important as I've lost count how many times I've thought I was in one plane only to be in the other and either getting one-shotted or having a moment of bewilderment when things don't work like they're supposed to in my mind. 😆 Having kids, Limbo is one of the better frames for open world as I can mostly just jump into the rift and go afk if the kids need my attention; though with Orb Vallis needing a bit more foresight.

It's so weird that one of, if not the definitively most difficult Warframe is available so early. You get his quest on Mars if I remember right, and he's such a crazy character that it's difficult to get a grasp on how to use him without watching a guide so a lot of players are gonna see him, try him out and then get confused as they wonder "What the hell am I supposed to do with this?" Personally I wrote him off as a gimmick from some old event and just got him to 30 before selling him. I honestly wish he was available a bit later (maybe swap him out for Titania or something since his unlock is through a Archwing mission and Titania is the Archwing Warframe or whatever) so that if someone does unlock him, they're more familiar with the game, and probably more willing to look up a guide to his kit.

Honestly this is an amazing video and sums up Limbo really well. As someone that loves Limbo I found myself nodding along.
Only thing that was really missed is that some enemies not even Eximus do completely screw over Limbo. They are rare but they do exist. Such as the Hyena's in Orb Valis they are immune to Stasis due to being classed as "boss units" and their attacks are classed as abilities meaning they can hit you even when you can't hit them.

  • @Solais1019

Limbo is my entire game play style across just about any shooter I've touched. He's just so utilitarian and flexible. As soon as they launched him I was hooked, and his rework made him even better. Though, I do very much miss the Za Warudo of freezing my own bullets for a barrage upon release, it made those headshot riven unlocks so much easier. Wish they'd bring that back as an augment.
On the note of the raid, limbo does not see a lot of usin that no, but he was extremely useful against the final stage of the boss versus the orbital bombardment spam. The few times that I was able to get in there, because too many people would leave if we weren't getting through fast enough, I was able to keep everybody on their feet every time they went down because the orbital bombardment was useless against limbo when he's in the rift. I just hid in the rift and kept picking everybody up lol.
Also, you skipped over another use for Cataclysm - when combined with Stasis, it's great for dealing damage to enemies continuously. Enemies that cross the planes take Blast damage, every time they change plane. This is also an often overlooked aspect of Cataclysm. Because it continues to shrink, enemies that touch it are damaged and frozen with Stasis, but it pulls back from them and frees them with another damage proc, so they walk forward into it, take damage and freeze again. It repeats as long as they keep walking forward and as long as Stasis is active, so they basically damage themselves against the border of the planes. I use this a lot when helping lower level friends clear their system map. I love watching them headbutt the Rift. "Stop hitting yourself. Stop hitting yourself."

Limbo was very misunderstood. Every RUclipsr I saw tried to make him a damage frame or single-area cc.
Same thing happened to Grendel. Now with his rework, the strategies that made him good don't work because he's not draining energy like a madman anymore, which was the core of his play style despite everyone saying he's bad because of it.

There is more to it than what he explained. Like the effect of banish is to send enemies to the opposite plane that the limbo and the enemy are in, so that means that if you and the enemy are in the rift, you can banish the enemies to the normal plane. That also means that if you cast rift torrent on an enemy that is in the rift and then banish that enemy, the surge will trigger, banishing the enemy itself and everything around it. That also means thay if you use cataclysm to put everyone in the rift, then cast rift surge and then disable cataclysm, all the surged enemies will trigger the surge and thus you have a banish that covers more than the area of the cataclysm. This can be used to have a cataclysm-sized rift area that is not affected by nullifiers (unless they touch the rifted enemies)

Funny how you didn't talk about the negative duration/high range build for Bimbo! With neg duration and high range, you only cast Rift Surge from time to time and the enemies auto-Rift each other. With enough neg duration you don't even need stasis any more since they drop to the ground all the time. So it frees a slot for a subsume. A very specific (and very old) build, but works wonders to this day.

Limbo was used in the Law of retribution, specifically the button section.
Being able to banish a teammate, catalyst/stasis one side, and then still stand on a button of your own was huge.

To add to this, when rift walk was an option, you used to be able to go to the rift with it, charge any bow, then tap it off to fire and immediately recast. This allowed limbo to feel amazing with bow options.

I dont play Limbo at all (prob. last time was as a boxbreaker before Xaku), but I always found it hilarious how people could twist their brain so much instead of just playing around their teammates mechanics. I mean years ago when Stasis stopped everything I get how that was kinda annoying, but with his new kit? This frame is doing complex mathematical equations to "ZA WARUDO" the whole map for you, yet you cannot grasp the idea of a wall that cant be shot through? My brother in christ, sounds like a you problem 🤣

"play around their teammate's mechanics" That's just pure fucking selfish behavior right there. This is PRECISELY why Limbo is hated. "Play how I WANT you to play right now or deal NO damage!" Or, how about Limbo stops hindering the entire fucking team?! No other warframe has such grievances because they either don't affect teammates, or they enhance teammates. Limbo just fucks with everyone for no good reason.

Glad you visited my main and had fun with it, if u want some extra fun, try the cernos proboscis with it, since it would work as nidus larva but dealing damage. You can also the fire proc mod from the camp outside your ship (forgot the name of the mod lmao, is a red one) use novas 1 with the augment wich it can be spammed and with enough eficiency, u can just infinite spam it even without using rift surge, and if u mix it with rift surge, well, yeah fire procs scale based on the first hit, meaning all the little balls will hit a potent fire proc and then since u have the red mod, you will stack a hell of fire procs, like 60 per enemy, wich is not necesary tho, they will die in less than 20 fire procs, because the first one was high (or use a secondary that procs heat with high damage and then start spamming) there are waaay to many variations of limbos thanks to the helmint.

Also, i unfortunately know some people that are un-educated on limbo, and hate him to the point of not wanting him in the game, and that makes this video doubly helpful in my eyes, as it allows people who don't know truly how he works to understand and stop hating him just for existing.

More Limbo tips and tricks. The Operator is always in the material plane. So if a terminal or datamass is in your Cataclysm you can use Operator to interact with it. I find being really good with operator helps with some short comings of Limbo's kit. Also if you are going to use your Operator to revive, drop your cataclysm and unbanish anything as your Operator has no way of attacking into the rift.

As a Limbo main, thank you for taking the effort to "set the record straight" as it were. I even learned some things and got a few ideas for new builds for him.
Since I almost exclusively play solo it's obvious why he'd be my main, he's literally a god of his own plane of existence and forces the enemies to play by HIS rules. He's definitely a nuanced frame, easy to understand his abilities but difficult to master the synergy of them, especially to be viable late game, and it's nice to see some appreciation for the gentleman, it's really sad to see him still getting hate all these years later, especially for outdated reasons, so videos like these a breath of fresh air.

A good all around star chart setup for limbo would be to replace his rift surge with breach surge as it allows you to essentially do the same thing with less steps, confusion, and without needing the surge augment while being more team friendly and giving you more leeway to come out of the rift since enemies including eximus units are blinded by that ability.
Also in steel path (including duviri). Just dash into rift, spam breach surge and you and your team can eat. Also using shade as his sentinel and vazarin focus school for more survivability suits him really well. He’s my 3rd most used frame behind Nyx (my 1st ever frame I built when I was a noob) and loki (invis and stealth Gas triple dip bug back in the day).
