- The beans taste delicious and can be made in just a few hours and don't require any soaking before hand. They are a great addition to burritos, nachos, tacos, or topped with a little cheese and onions. Pinto beans are high on protein and fiber.
9 Cups Hot Water
2 lbs Dried Pinto Beans
1 TBS Salt
1 tsp Pepper
3 Cloves Minced Garlic
2 TBS White Vinegar
1 Medium Onion Chopped
2 tsp Ground Cumin
2 TBS Tallow or Lard (Optional)
Cuisinart Hand Blender - This is my favorite hand blender. The bottom half is removable for easy washing.

"By far the best Instant pot refried beans video out there." 10/10
I've watched probably 5 videos of people making refried beans in the instapot and they made it so complicated lol thank you for providing something comprehensible! Definitely will drive and get some cummin!😅
It will be worth it 🙂
I've used this recipe numerous times and it's awesome. Good job and Thanks!
Glad you like it, thanks!
My go to recipe. I’ve cooked these 8 times and they are always perfect.
That's great to hear!
thank you for the video. im making whole Pinto Beans tonight to make beans and corn bread for dinner. not doing the refried beans but this helped since I've never made beans in the IP before! i look forward to more IP videos! thanks!
I enjoy your videos, would you be doing more? I like how you explain the recipe, easy to follow, thanks!
I plan to make more. Just have to make the time.
Thank you! I do like wholesome cooking.
Excellent Recipe!
Wow! Thank you for your tips and techniques. I will be making this recipe soon! Awesome!
+Ana Perez Glad you liked the video, how were the beans?
Coconut oil swapped for animal product worked awsome. Fresh cilantro set it off.
What a great way to get some coconut oil in your diet. I have made some cocoa and coconut oil meltaways as a treat.
Thanks. I was wondering what I could use as a substitute. Not the cilantro, though. Not a fan. :-)
Way too soupy. Before mashing I would remove some of the liquid with a turkey baster. But the basic recipe and technique look sound.
How can lard have good health properties?
Oh bean pudding!!!
Love it!!!😂😂🤣🤣
nice !!
Thank!
😎 ☺ 💘
Eat the beans! You have to eat the thing you prepared at the end!
You don't have to mix it before you start cooking?
No sir, you can if you'd like, but it's not necessary.
ive been told adding salt too soon in the cooking process can mess w/ the texture of the beans... any thoughts/findings on this? have u tried adding salt after the cooking process? thx for the video!
+Nicole I haven't tried adding the salt after. I'll have to try it.
I was taught the same thing, but it turns out, it's not true. When I saw him add salt in the video, I thought the same thing as you! Then I started researching, because I was taught to soak and never salt til cooked. Turns out, neither is required or supported by science! www.latimes.com/food/dailydish/la-dd-dont-soak-dried-beans-20140911-story.html
Why do you use the natural release instead of the quick release?
+Nalani Hamby It is part of the coming process, if you want to do a quick release you would have to add cooking time. After I read your comment I did a quick release after the time was up and the beans were still quite hard.
Oh I'm so sorry! I didn't mean it as a criticism I have just heard people stating they did a natural release or a quick release but not why they went with the release option they did and was curious as to the why.
Ha! No worries, I didn't take it as criticism. I thank you, it gave me an excuse to experiment.
Oh phew! Okay haha I was worried.
why do you add vinegar? I've been making beans for decades and never needed to add most of those ingredients to taste authentic. I only add garlic, onion, salt & occasionally some form of fat. But I'm interested why vinegar. Thanks!
+Julianna HM I don't add it when cooking in a crock pot only in the instant pot. It seems to break down the "skin" of the beans. They seems to be a little tough without it, I assume due to the short cooking time.
Ah, thanks for answering. Does it influence the taste? I'll try it with and without to see.
+Julianna HM The second time I made this recipe I actually forgot the vinegar. :) I didn't notice a taste difference I just like the texture better with it.
