Thank you :) I didn't try to get an exact copy with this painting. It was more about learning the techniques that Vermeer used to create this masterpiece.
Honestly, thank you so much for making this tutorial. I followed along and got such a beautiful result thanks to you, it took me 2 weeks but every single time i had your video opened constantly, I might have contributed to atleast a 1000 views on this video. Youre an amazing artist!
Thank you for the fabulous feedback. I am so glad your painting came out great. Feel free to tag me on Instagram if you have posted it there so I can see #paintbasket
Just an awesome and beautiful piece of work. You are a wonderful artist. I started painting a year ago doing landscapes trying to learn about colors and how to mix with the ultimate desire to learn and eventually do portraiture... thank you so kindly for this...👍
Thank you for the compliment. I do have a portrait painting course on my website which can look at : paintbasket.com/shop/how-to-paint-portraits-in-oil/ Good luck :)
Do you prepare canvas before to flat painting ? I see always canvas textures on my works, so I add very much color to cover canvas textures. Can you suggest the correct way ? Thanks.
I never prime my canvasses and like the texture that you see showing through. If you don't then you can use gesso to coat the canvas before painting, then lightly sand over it to get a smooth surface.
Thank you. I am glad you are enjoying the lessons. The original artist was Johannes Vermeer. For this painting I needed the sketch outlines to be exact in order to get a likeness so I printed the original image out to the size of my canvas and transferred the outlines. That then also gave me a real size print from which to reference while painting.
Of course you can! Just take your time with the shading work and you will be fine :) On my website you can follow the real time version of the class if that will help you.
This is amazing omg. Totally not going to be able to do this but I'm forced to do so 😭 Any advice for us non-artists whose forced to paint for grades? ⭐⭐⭐
You got this, just patiently work your layers over each other to get a smooth shading. Alternately use oil paint as that will give you a longer time to do the shading without the paint drying on you. Good luck and let me know how it turned out :)
Bravo, super, j'aimerai peindre comme vous .Combien d'années de pratique ? Le travail d'un grand Maître. Un grand merci pour cette vidéo. Josiane de FRANCE.
I have been painting for many years, but it is not the amount of years that count, rather the amount of brush strokes. The more you practice, the quicker you improve. Obviously following lessons like mine also make the learning go quicker so find yourself a mentor who's teaching style works for you :)
Sometimes I paint them first sometimes last. You will often find that painting the mouth and eyes last will give you a better tie in to the surrounding skin.
Nice tutorial. The earring has been a mysterY for some time, but research revealed it is probably made of glass. second : this is not a portrait. A portrait is a painting of a real person that had to look exactly like the model. This painting ( type of painting) is called a "tronie". Here the painter had the liberty to make it look however he wanted it to look. Most of Vermeer's paintings had the light source on the left side. Probably early daylight if you look at the angle of the shadows. yes i'd date your version too..she is pretty : P
Hey, I just wanted to ask if u painted this on a canvas or a paper cuz I want to paint it but I'm confused abt the blending cuz when u blend on the canvas it kinda ruins the color
@PaintBasket I'm watching this on mobile, and when I open the gear Icon on top of the video, the quality is unavailable, meaning I can't change it... 😔
I seriously was looking through your videos like 20 minutes ago to find out how to paint a portrait ! Perfect timing ! Thanks a lot !
Glad it was helpful!
I think I’ll be doing some of your classes soon! Need a few things first !
This is amazing. I realized the eyes seem larger and brighter in the original but otherwise this is such a great dupe

Good jobb!
thank you :)
I wish u showed the color pallate
In the paint along version of the lesson on my website I show the palette as well as how to mix the colours :)
Interesting that you paint the eyes, mouth LAST... when most artists START with those features... nicely done, though!

it was painted on canvas.
Honestly, too bad I couldn't change the quality of the video so I can look the details much better
You should be able to adjust the video quality up to 1080p HD using the gear icon at the bottom of the video

I like it very much. Very well done. If the eyes were a little bigger and the chin a bit shorter it would be perfect.
thank you :)
bro can we get a video on how you sketched it first
For this painting I created my self a template using the grid method then transferred those outlines to the canvas.
Nice but the video is very fast
There is a link in the description to the real time version of this class :)
Eyes are to small.....but all in all. Good job
Thanks :)
You sound south african/Afrikaans
I do have a South African accent yes :)
