Man his transition from each phrases is silky smooth. A little old school sound, but Josh can be progressive in his technique or he can be melodic. He has complete command of his saxophone skills. He could play like Brecker or he can play like the prez.
These two remind me why I'm so grateful that despite the accusations of elitism and intellectual snobbery I remain so head over heels in love with improvised music. Drowning in the deep and surprising synergies and tangential explorations of this rendering of what is, fundamentally, a very simple harmonic form, sets up waves of bliss that oscillate between my mind and heart like orgasmic contractions. It just doesn't get better.
mug3n People like this dude are the reason for the reputation of jazz being "intellectual snobbery". He's just writing eloquent nonsense and obviously doesn't understand what this music is about.
You are amazing and the band as well.I am learning how to play alto saxophone and if I was in love with saxophone ,. it double it now, God bless you all. Kind Regards
Saw Brad Meldau and Bad Plus play at my local college back in 2015. Probably the best live jazz I've ever seen. Too bad I don't live in New York. California is just not a jazz town.
This is when music becomes metaphysical and, as the instruments twist and intertwine, gradually appears to elevate itself into the realm of the origins of the universe. Stunning.
Imagine you are Brad Mehldau for a second. At some point you come up with a brilliant idea. Or I should say at ANY point!!! Actually what happens at 5:08 seems to me impossible to think.
I like Josh's playing here, very much!! I like his work playing when delving into extreme trane stuff but not as much as this!! great! First time hearing Brad, fuckin gob=smacked!!
This recording is validation of the concept that melody, not harmony is what makes a song a song! Playing off the melody the whole time, barely touching the changes
Henry Fernandez No. What make a song is not the melody, or the harmony: it's you and how deep you express yourself. There is no tips for how to play a song good. You can play harmony and doing a great solo, or play over the melody and doing a great too, or use something else...: no matter what kind of process you use. It's just you, your awerness, feeling and thoughts.
Henry Fernandez, I wonder how you mean "Melody and not harmony" is important. Hmmn I agree they are playing off the melody, but isn't Meldhau using harmony with how he plays off both hands?
Absolutely. It's why I've got rhythm and Anthrolpology are distinguishable between each. Same changes, different melody. Soloing off the melodies is what prevents jazz tunes from being generalized harmony exercises
I disagree. They're still underlining the harmony as they are playing the melody. Even when they play outside the changes in their solos they're still expressing a harmonic idea. Rhythm, harmony, and melody are just the base components, I think it's hard to argue that one is more important than the other
Redman's face during Mehldau's solo is possibly the most honest thing I've ever witnessed.
This is the absolute highest level of communication within music.
The pianist has total hand independence.
Brad's solo is fucking insane
Yes. I love his power of both hands. His internal clock is insane
Saw him live at vanguard a few weeks ago, he’s a ridiculous human being
Man his transition from each phrases is silky smooth.
A little old school sound,
but Josh can be progressive in his technique or he can be melodic.
He has complete command of his saxophone skills.
He could play like Brecker or he can play like the prez.
it's like Vin Diesel and Charlie Parker having a kid
BRUH I'm dying laughing over here
ahahahahah
He doesn't look remotely like Vin Disel dipshit.
how can you possibly get offended by this? :D
Max Hobohm How could you possibly laugh over such a stupid fucking joke?
I've listened to this for like 100 times and every time I discover another new piece of brilliancy... Incredible.
Those guys are completely unbelievable

Deux génies sur la même planète..bravo pour un Oleo hors du temps et soft..
Excellant composition. Joshua Redman truly brings necessary freshness to jazz of modern times. Best Duet ever.
4:16, Joshua Redman : "what the heck is Brad doing ? I don't have a f-------- clue !"
that face would make an awesome meme
gordo64ful lol!
MAKE IT SO gordo!
Listen to Jarrett's "pardon my rags" its a clue

Quite the eloquent explanation my friend
Martin Wolfaardt
Wonderfully penned!
well said
No, not well said at all. This comment is not in the spirit of jazz.
mug3n People like this dude are the reason for the reputation of jazz being "intellectual snobbery". He's just writing eloquent nonsense and obviously doesn't understand what this music is about.
This is so great - both such command of their instruments - free to play whatever they want.

Hoy Joshua estubo en la Trastienda, Montevideo /Uruguay junto a Philip Morris y Nazir Ebo. Sucumbimos frente a tanta belleza de música.
This is out of this world. Power of dedication and practice
Yea..... its the world of sax
And don't forget power of friendship. Which is something musicians often forgot while focusing on chords and chops.
God… they go so far out and yet there’s always a sense of the melody going on. Both just masters of their instruments
You are amazing and the band as well.I am learning how to play alto saxophone and if I was in love with saxophone ,. it double it now, God bless you all. Kind Regards
Weird? Brad Mehldau l.h. very impressive. Also he has kind of a stiff sense of time but he is really and original, got his own thing. Very impressive.
Old friends always make the best music.
Jaw on floor. Unreal how good they both are. No words.
whenever I think Brad goes so far into the stratosphere, he goes even further, each time. that's why people like this will never die
Rhythm is King !!
Rhythm a ning ?
Saw Brad Meldau and Bad Plus play at my local college back in 2015. Probably the best live jazz I've ever seen. Too bad I don't live in New York. California is just not a jazz town.
Two masters at work....great!
brilliant stuff! hahaha, Josh's face at 4:16 .... :-) :-)
"it's not fair, he can play all those notes at once ... !"
This is when music becomes metaphysical and, as the instruments twist and intertwine, gradually appears to elevate itself into the realm of the origins of the universe. Stunning.
Best piano-sax duo that I can imagine... impressive creativity maintaining a perfect timing
Brilliant duo.
jungle fever @ 3:33 and flows throughout the next min or two. hilarious
I can't get enough of this... Any work/artist with a similar feel? that is genious, unbelievable, amazing, complex, melodious yet new stuff etc?
Bill Evans is basically his equivalent for his time.
brilliant genius playing by these two! important to note that josh is keeping time on 1st & 3rd beats when tapping his foot...
This is what jazz is all about.
Incroyable !
Three cheers for Josh Redman and Brad Mehldau!
Imagine you are Brad Mehldau for a second. At some point you come up with a brilliant idea. Or I should say at ANY point!!! Actually what happens at 5:08 seems to me impossible to think.

8:30 the lick
How more creative and musical can you get!!!
amazing!!
he's so tight that he starts doing like a psychic thing to the piano so it plays alone by itself hahaha
Fueron los 14min más magistrales e insolitos
I swear the meme potential in this video is off the charts with the edits.
That lick at 2:38 is driving me crazy! It honestly feels like an extraterrestrial message
Try triads on tritones intervals ;)
Thank you, @@ogdTo. I had never stopped to analyze it, but it definitely is that!
A big gift to Sonny and all of us 😊
Acceptable performance!
