I had this done to me during my second ever jujitsu class because the instructor learned that I knew some judo (classes I had taken when I was a lot younger) and wanted to have one of his guys show me that jujitsu was better than judo. He was somewhat upset that I had pinned one of his blue belts. I had no idea how to make anyone tap. I had been respectful and wasn’t being a show off. But he had to prove a point.
He put me with a guy that was more capable than the blue belt but was a yellow belt. I escaped a triangle and that irritated him. Then the guy did this particular move and cranked so fast and hard my whole spinal cord cracked like a machine gun. He even said, oh shite.
12 years and I’m still going to therapy to help with the pain. It comes back to haunt me once every so often.
I guess my fault was having taken classes in a judo school they taught you respect and control. Where cranking someone’s neck wouldn’t show him who’s boss. I’ve been to a couple jujitsu classes where this happens on the regular. But in general, in jujitsu if you get injured it’s because your partner has sociopathic tendencies and no one notices. Usually the instructor is more concerned that you’ll sue. But other than that, there is no checking that kind of behavior. It weeds the ones that can’t win competitions out of the herd. So then the school only ends up with champions. Which is good for business.
Ankle and knee locks included. Everyone that has them cranked violently on them knows it’s allowed behavior in some gyms if it means losing or winning during practice. No one’s is looking. Or warning people not to do such things.
There’s a lot of dangerous guys out there with a lot of trophies and a trail of injured newbies.
If you’re starting jujitsu find a conscientious instructor. Or your jujitsu career will be short and have long term consequences.
