So I have a tip for water troughs, they are usually controlled by a ballcock like you have in your toilet right. So find the mechanism for that it’s usually in a box to the side and just pull it down it down and fresh water will pour out of a tap. I hope that helps!! I grew up on a farm and that’s how we drink out of them if we need to because there’s sometimes parasites in the water or bacteria
I once drew cooking water from a stream a few inches from cow paddies. We filtered and boiled it for cooking so I felt totally fine with it logically, but it was a little worrying.

The first comment was specifically speaking to bacteria being the main concern OVER virus, and the second comment ran with a catch all "parasites." The parasites found in water are much too large to pass through these filters. So while yes, boiling is required to be certain ALL virus or bacteria have died, parasites are a category these filters are specifically useful and effective for. I was speaking *specifically* to parasites and parasites alone, and nodding to the fact that these things are not interchangeable. Hot damn. Context is important.
Here in Scotland there's a few quick cold streams that have a nice taste and filter so well. The fresh streams taste so much better than tap or bottled water

And they wouldn't change a thing. At this point, it seems Tim and Renee r simply working to backpack. There is going to be a longevity as in their hearts and lungs because they stay so active. I wish them a very long, healthy, happy life.
They're using Sawyer Squeeze filters here, which have a log reduction rate of 7. This means 99.99999% of bacteria are removed from the water, which almost guarantees they won't get sick. Still, if you do get something like Giardia, the best option is to just tough it out until you can reach a town and get a hotel. I've heard the stomach pain can be pretty brutal but it's rarely life-threatening.

just got back from a vacation on the south island, went from Wanaka to Te Anau and Milfort Sound to Queenstown. So many beautiful hikes especially around Milford Sound
I grew up up walking the trails in the 400 acres of woods behind my grandparents farmhouse. There’s a beautiful springs you can drink right out of. My first house was a bit of a shack and my ex husband connected our taps to the spring on our land. Best water you’ll ever drink. You should hike in NB Canada. It’s a beautiful area.
My favorite eater source is the sink because regardless, it means I have the Lucerne of having clean water whenever I need it. I always have to be appreciative of that overall. But fresh, natural water sources are always incredible.
I fucking love a hot spring in the pouring cold rain, there's something eurphoric about it. Best I can get nowadays is an uncovered hot tub but it just isn't the same
“Geyser fed bathtub temperature stream” sounds so nice, especially on a cold morning. Only problem is you have to get out eventually and leave the warmth lol

Pro tip for water collection in a running stream is to hold the opening away from the flow so you get fewer "chunks" (unless you're trying to catch live bait). Even though you're going to filter the water, this will save wear and tear on your filter and its life span. Otherwise, you may need to prefilter out any chunky bits.

I've not walked anywhere near the miles you have but a friend and I hiked across Michigan when we were young. Water was always a challenge sometimes we found campgrounds and sometimes it was a green pond. And as you said the worst part was going home.
My dad knew a guy that walked all the way from Chile in South Africa all the way to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. He walked all the way through the Mexican border and through all the states including Canada. No hitchhiking, no nothing (walking only). It took the man about 15 years. He made it. No injuries or anything.
Whenever i did my duke of Edinburgh gold in the scottish highlands i brought a filtered water bottle and purification tablets but never ended up using them because the water was absolutely pristine and honestly was the best, cleanest water id ever tasted. Would love to go back one day

I was once on a hike in girl scouts (over 50 years ago) and we refilled our canteens from a cow watering trough which was an old claw foot bath tub. The water was clean and fresh, with a faucet constantly dripping into it slowly. But we dunked our canteens right into the tub.

As a ranch hand please be carefull drinking from cattle tanks although they are filtered, that water has so much stuff in it.
