So I have a tip for water troughs, they are usually controlled by a ballcock like you have in your toilet right. So find the mechanism for that it’s usually in a box to the side and just pull it down it down and fresh water will pour out of a tap. I hope that helps!! I grew up on a farm and that’s how we drink out of them if we need to because there’s sometimes parasites in the water or bacteria

@@lashondamiller2982 no, they don't. But they do get stuck in the filter. 😊
Y'all. Read the comments in order and my comment will make more sense. Parasites are not bacteria nor are they virus. The first comment was specifically speaking to bacteria being the main concern OVER virus, and the second comment ran with a catch all "parasites." The parasites found in water are much too large to pass through these filters. So while yes, boiling is required to be certain ALL virus or bacteria have died, parasites are a category these filters are specifically useful and effective for. I was speaking *specifically* to parasites and parasites alone, and nodding to the fact that these things are not interchangeable. Hot damn. Context is important.

They're using Sawyer Squeeze filters here, which have a log reduction rate of 7. This means 99.99999% of bacteria are removed from the water, which almost guarantees they won't get sick. Still, if you do get something like Giardia, the best option is to just tough it out until you can reach a town and get a hotel. I've heard the stomach pain can be pretty brutal but it's rarely life-threatening.

Looks like you guys are having the time of your lives, so carry on and hope you keep sharing with us! Pro tip for water collection in a running stream is to hold the opening away from the flow so you get fewer "chunks" (unless you're trying to catch live bait). Even though you're going to filter the water, this will save wear and tear on your filter and its life span. Otherwise, you may need to prefilter out any chunky bits.

I’ll admit the one thing I love about living in idaho is how clean all the rivers and lakes are. Like they are super clean for lakes and rivers and great fishing/drinking water sources

I've not walked anywhere near the miles you have but a friend and I hiked across Michigan when we were young. Water was always a challenge sometimes we found campgrounds and sometimes it was a green pond. And as you said the worst part was going home.

My dad knew a guy that walked all the way from Chile in South Africa all the way to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. He walked all the way through the Mexican border and through all the states including Canada. No hitchhiking, no nothing (walking only). It took the man about 15 years. He made it. No injuries or anything.

I was once on a hike in girl scouts (over 50 years ago) and we refilled our canteens from a cow watering trough which was an old claw foot bath tub.
The water was clean and fresh, with a faucet constantly dripping into it slowly. But we dunked our canteens right into the tub.
