- Oxtra Xmas Challenge 2016 Day 1: Welcome to the Outside Xtra 2016 Christmas Challenge! In our first EVER Christmas Challenge, Luke and Ellen go head-to head as they try to get to Riften form the start of the game in the shortest time possible. Who will win the first point? Who will get Sprinty there the fastest? Who will be chomped to pieces by wolves?
---
Outside Xtra is a companion channel to Outside Xbox, covering the wider world of gaming with weekly lists, Let's Plays and shows with your hosts Ellen and Luke. Look for regular appearances by OG Outside Xboxers Andy, Jane and Mike, and generally more of the videos you love, about more of the platforms you enjoy, from a team now two people larger overall.

Should have used Kippers - a dose of catnip and he'd have glitch-flown to Riften in a couple of seconds. Like a kitty Concorde.
Yes! Kippers could have told the wolves to leave Ellen alone, or maybe just eaten a few and scared the rest off.
1. Go to Whiterun stables
2. Get a cart to Riften
3. Done
Joe Crawford I think you need to go to Riften before you can get a cart to it.
nope you don't
Isaac Holder last time I checked you don't ?
Nope! Riften is one of my first ports of call and you can just go straight there.
Mikillding Ding muh immersion
Skyrim. Where 9 times out of 10 taking the road is faster than going over the mountains. And 9 people out of 10 try the mountain way.
You arent playing skyrim properly if you arent trying to billy goat your way up and over a mountain.
emrfish6 90 percent of what i do in skyrim
emrfish6 I got to the Throat of the World before I got to High Hrothgar by scravelling up the mountain.
As someone who avoids fast travel in Bethesda games, and thus knows Skyrim about as well as I know my own hometown, I am very glad that Luke found that path through the mountains.
The winner of the two respective channels challenges, should take each other on in a final challenge to decide who is the official king/queen of Christmas.
It's day one of the first ever Xtra Xmas Challenge! Today is a race to Riften in Skyrim! Who will win? Who will weep into a frozen pond at the bottom of a mountain? Watch and see!
Outside Xtra You guys should give James some challenges maybe he will win and stop Andy's winning streak.
did you guys still not install the no spider mod??
Couldn't you also have gone to Whiterun and taken a carriage to Riften?
Madness! You dare compare James "The Cameraman"...family name to a MORTAL?! HERESY!
Benjamin King yeah i thought so too, that would have been like 4 minutes
I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but 'Skyrim' became part of my gaming vocab in any game where you could hop over mountains you clearly weren't supposed to be able to surmount on foot.
"Oh, what's that? A ruddy great volcano between me and my goal? Bet I can Skyrim my way over it!"
"Morrowind it" for the old school gamers.
It was in Oblivion and Skyrim where I developed my archery/sneak character (before that I played a tank role). With her I refined the technique of climbing into normally inaccessible terrain in order to shoot arrows with relative impunity. In headcanon, this her "grabbing sky and making it rain".
It's almost Thanksgiving which means it's time for my annual rewatch of all the oxtra and oxbox xmas challenges!
Luke won, but Ellen was playing Skyrim the right way. XD
Raydeus yup everybody knows that the right way to play skyrim is to get lost and explore
Spoiler Alert!
Don't tell Jane Mike and Andy but this is totally the better Xmas challenge ;)
Should have run to Whiterun, stole some coin and hired a cart...
A dragon wont spawn unless you do the quest where you discover you're a dragonborn. A troll will spawn instead. A big one.
kanekan all trolls are the same size.
John Cena69 If this was english class I'd say I used what's called a Hyperbole.
First Oxbox Xmas Challenge and now Oxtra Xmas Challenge! Best present evah! Y'all are too kind! :D
Having to pick between watching this and the oxbox Christmas challenge first has been the hardest decision of my day. I live a rather easy life. And btw, I chose this one.
why won't u watch both???
I will, I should've said first. I'm actually watching the other one right now.
There we go, fixed it.
Ellen and Luke always amaze me with how well they work together. Even in competition.
I love these people. They have such genuine fun, it's infectious.
As you both ran straight to Riften where the thieves guild calls home after escaping the chopping block... maybe you Did do what the Empire accused you of?
Hopalongtom The empire accuses the dragonborn of illegally crossing the border of skyrim. Not stealing....
The empire accuses the dragonborn of posting their comment twice.
Hopalongtom actually they don't accuse you of anything, they just say " (blanks) name isn't on the list, what do we do?" " forget the list (blank) gets the block
NobleNeed nope earlier on crossing the border was the accusation
Feels unfair. Luke did had the chance to see the full route beforehand.
zadel88 Yeah.
zadel88 Not just the route, he also decided to use fire because it worked well for Ellen. If he had gone first she might have used waypoints and would have done much better. Going second was a huge advantage.
Yeah, not sure why the least experienced was picked to go first. Think that it would have been more interesting if it were switched.
YAY! OUTSIDEXTRA GETS XMAS CHALLENGES TOO!!!
Christina Nightraven The hype is real. xD
I am so glad you guys are getting to take part in the challenge! Although I think I'd prefer it if all five of you did one MEGA CHALLENGE.
Luke may win the challenge, but Ellen win at "Most Kills" in a journey to find Riften, she even tried to kill a goat.
Luke: those wolves did not like being on fire...well done Ellen.
Ellen: thank you.
Little do she know Luke was just ordering his wolf steak.
I love how you can hear Ellen frantically mashing the jump button to climb the mountain. CLIMB TO FREEDOM, ELLEN! CLIIIIIMB!
"I spend a lot of time perfecting my Khajits."
Don't we all, Ellen, don't we all...
I'm excited that you two get your own challenge. It sucked seeing you both not participating during the Outside XBOX challenges. Hurray to this!
So happy to see you guys doing this as well! You're a great addition to the channel(s). Though I think my favorite video from you guys will forever be the Resident Evil 7 Halloween Special
I bet if Kippers did this it would be in under a minute...my hero
the winner of this challenge should verse the winner of the outside xbox challenge for the unified champ
“I’ll help with the spiders” so sweet
Watching this is painful! I'm so sorry for your luck Ellen! The fastest route (that I knew before watching Luke) would've just been around the mountain the way you went the second time, but cut through Ivarstead. It lets you get up that cliff between Riften and Winterhold with minimal effort (although I encountered a few bears). Still good work!
I was expecting the race to be from Solitude to Riften on horses, but this awkward hiking is just as fun!
Glad to see you guys getting in on the Christmas Challenge tradition! Already looking forward to tomorrow :)
It should be Xtra Oxmas Challenge! But honestly I'm just happy to see your challenge videos. These challenges are the best thing about December (online). :D
So I started watching Outside Xbox and saw that you all were given your own show.... BRILLIANT. As I have been unemployed as of late Luke and Ellen. and mostly KIPPERS. has reminded me that life is like a game......except you can't restart, or kill people at will, or be a kajit, take catnip and then try and fight things.... Well it's been fun, and more than entertaining. Looking forward to seeing more of you in 2017.
Ayy, I'm really glad that you guys are having your own Xtra Xmas challenge!
You guys are awesome:) outside xbox and extra:)...wish I could turn a passion for games into something like this
i was so excited when i woke up and saw that Outside Xtra was in on the oxmas challenges, too! must be an oxmas miracle :3
Okay, you guys win. I came close, 7:22 and I was halfway there, and then I got a bear. I never saw so many wolves in my life. If I ever want some pelts I'm going to make a mad dash to Riften.
I don't talk to the TV as a rule, but I was vexed enough by Ellen's playthrough that I was commentating. "...The giant... THE GIANT! FFS!" "No, not that way, no... ARGH"
WHY ARE ALL OF ELLEN'S CHRISTMAS JUMPERS INCREDIBLE?!
On the 1st day of christmas, Outside Extra gave to me:
An elf sprinting into Riften.
Fiery Jabiy - More like an elf running to riften *3* Times
You seriously didn't steal the horse? Really? That would have cut your travel time in half.
Also dragons don't randomly appear until after you are summoned by the Graybeards.
why the fuck didnt she just run past everything
The moment they notice how the character runs during Luke's go and Ellen laughs and suddenly I thought I was watching that horror film Wrong Turn including the crazy laugh from the film!!!
Why didn't you play a Redguard?
Stamina Regen power.
Well the High elf is the tallest race so they move the fast due to longer legs, way more effective then having faster regen for 60 seconds :P
eh dollet they don't run faster though.
They actually do believe it or not. The swing their weapons faster too. However the fastest way would be the back patch going from the path you enter Helgen in the cart. There is always a horse back there. Assu.ing you can't use carriages that is.
Redguards are usually preferred by Elder Scrolls speedrunners because their abilities make them the fastest race in the series. Sprinting ability carries the most weight in these games.
AeroandCyndar Yeah I guess you could wait 24 hours every time you ran out, but WlLDEHlLDE its apparently 8% faster according to a quick good search or it's bull shit, either way I heard it from someone who is usually right
I can't wait to see you two on the couch again, once this all clears up.
And Luke can add 'Soup Dragon' to his list of impressions, after that swim.
I understand that Kippers was apprehended by the Imperials (according to your news ticker yesterday) but you could've sold some trinkets to pay the bail and bought some catnip 😁
Ellen's Ti fueled anhedonic start to this video, is quite enjoyable.
This is super relevant for me right now as I just got the special edition and am playing it so I really enjoyed this.
8:04
- "There's a big tree-thing there that looks like a perfect place for a dragon to spawn" *laughs*
- *laughs* "Oh man! Can you imagine?! Could happen..."
No, it couldn't... You need to get past the first dragon near Whiterun in the story before dragons start spawning in the world. For someone who has played a lot of Skyrim, this is a thing he overlooked quite badly ;) :p I love how they stress over it though
Thank you for providing all the funnies for us!
THEY WERE PLAYING ON A PS4!!! 😂😂😂 They're from OutsideXBox and they were playing on a PS4. Greatest channel on YT.
Ellen is so adorable with her cute laugh.
Luke isn't bad either.
Good hires OxBox!
James should get some challenges who knows he might win and stop Andy's winning streak.
Prodigy Gamer who the hell is James?
The cameraman.
Cameraman, I think.
You don't bring nukes to a tea party.
Who the eff is Hank?
I wonder if it would be considered cheating to run to whiterun and use the carriage to travel to riften?
I was thinking the same thing.
Same haha
Mike is at it again! He took the couch cover!
Is this the courier training in skyrim?
So that's how they find me every fucking whenever I fast-travel somewhere...
Shane Hanson the courrier training is way harder
You probably have to go from Solitude to Riften in under 5 minutes lol
Shane Hanson impossible max is 20 mins
Oh please. I once made that run in under 12 parsecs... Your move oxtra...
Weeeeellllll i think the one that had the most experience should go first, good luck for the next time Ellen!
I love Ellen's laugh so much.
Luke should have stolen that horse he ran into - admittedly, he didn't need it...
There was no luck Luke knew exactly where to go lol. This Doc call shenanigans.
Campaign for my support. Best argument gets me to follow either Luke or Ellen. GO!
Austin Jones fuck off mate.
Sy A.A Where's the holiday cheer? xD
That Giant was genuinely the only non-aggressive giant in the game. No joke...
So what we learned from this video is that, while horses may be Ellen's friends, wolves certainly are not...
Ho ho ho indeed! Looking forward to this series guys!
AHHHH A GIANT
ya the one friendly giant in the whole game.
Kinda wanted Luke to steal the hunter's horse and spend the rest of the run laughing maniacally.
Also, Luke and Ellen, you needn't of worried about dragons, they don't randomly spawn until you do the Dragon Rising quest for Jarl Balgruf in Whiterun.
Wouldn't it have been Easiers to take a carriage from WhiteRUN?
that was my first thaught!
when i first played skyrim i pickpocketed gold enough to take the carrage to riften and never turned back
I thought the same, thing, but i dont know if that would be considered cheating
Even if that's considered not allowed, heading in that direction to steal a horse would enable getting the rest of the route quicker too.
literally my first thought when they mentioned the challenge
no the dragon couldn't spawn until you kill the 1st one. Luke should stop trying to scare Ellen xD
***** I know. My comment was about dragons not giants (although Luke could've mentioned that part to ellen aswell xD)
+Outside Extra Ellan why didn't know that there was a pass behind Helgen. YOU WERE STARING RIGHT OVER THE PASS!..................Good job Luke.
that giant is actually peaceful. He's mourning his dead mammoth and unless provoked he don't care about you.
Can't believe you didn't run into any feral ghouls
I know, it's almost like they don't exist in skyrim
Just Musty Prime Was worried she'd run into a Deathclaw
Dullahan I was hoping for at least 1 super mutant to come up...
Got a few wild mongrels though
And in this episode, our hosts realize how difficult speedrunning is...
Luke you had a chance to explore the beautiful spider caves. (If there were any nearby).
I once walked from the black briar estate to dragons reach while encumbered. Twice. So haven tried to figure out the fasted path before,i tried this and beat both you times. Plus the 500+ hours couldn’t have hurt......
What is it about Skyrim that has Luke and Ellen breaking into song at least once a video?
Luke's always seemed like a puppy, but I think this is bringing out his ruthless streak :P
Ellen doesn't flee, she performs strategic maneuvers.
Surely since Ellen doesn't know the map, she should have gone second, right?
good point
I think the point was that Luke already knew the map so he didn't get any information from Ellen's playing.
as a matter of fact, that giant Ellen almost stepped on won't attack you first due to his dead pal in the water
Well, it's time for the Xmas marathon again
Luke had such an advantage from watching Ellen's attempt. They should have had to go head-to-head on dual consoles.
Admittedly, that would have cut down on the awesomeness of the commentary.
I'm surprise you guys were worried about dragons, because they don't spawn until you finish the first Dragon born quest. I love this concept by the way. I need to know another skyrimer so I can give it try. Might try to beat your time.
Luke: Why don´t I casually swim towards goldenglow estate
All viewers: Did he just...? LUKE RUN
"Put your sword away... It's Square" - SONY INTERLOPER REEEEEEEEEEEE
05:35
Now you know where the name Wolverhamptom Wanderer's comes from, poor Ellen. She took the road only the wolves traveled on and it made all the difference.
There's a shortcut along the north side of the mountain, a high pass that begins near the Stormcloak camp near Whiterun and ends on the road to Ivarstead by the abandoned well with the Wispmother haunting it.
Over the mountain and through the lake, to Riften City we go!
He should've just stolen the hunter's horse up in the pass then sprint pass any hostiles on the road. The bounty would've been for the Falkreath hold so it would not have complicated his entry into Riften.
A cheeky trick would be to head into Ivarstead after the pass (which he did just to swim) then punch a guard and surrender to pay the bounty or just to jail if he couldn't afford the 40 septim bounty, that would take you straight to Riften jail bypassing the door tax scene and all the traveling. Would've been pretty funny too if he didn't pay the bounty and just went straight to the Riften jail cell.
I thought the Christmas vids would be rubbish but they're really really good
YOU SET THE GOAT ON FIRE? YOU HAVE PLAYED GOAT SIMULATOR RIGHT? YOU SHOULD KNOW WHAT THEY'RE CAPABLE OF!
fun fact that giant standing in front of the dead mammoth is actually not hostile at all unless you hit him.
You went with Ralof instead of Hadvar?! But... but... he's so nice to you!
The giant that Ellen "didn't clock" can't be agro'ed. He's the mourning giant who will only attack if attacked.
ellen... the mountain pass through helgen.... pls
Run to Whiterun, take the carriage to Riften, Job done
If there's one thing I took from this video, it is that Ellen takes judgment of her decisions under pressure poorly.
"Umm, I'd like the tea, not the coffe, please?"
"Alright, fair enough."
"WHY MUST YOU JUDGE ME SO?!"
Now, this is where I usually petition for Ellen to play "Deadly Creatures" on the Wii, but hearing her talk about her arachnophobia in this video, this MAY be a bit unfair. So I guess it's also alright if Luke does it... as long as Ellen watches. Can't take the fun COMPLETELY out of it
is the cart allowed?
Ikr max 5 minutes with the cart or less
Harry Snell Luke found a horse. Is it allowed?
Did he? I mean the challenge didn't restrict either really.
