Price is one thing, I'd be concerned about reliability and accuracy. If I'm concerned about the cable being live, I'd rather use a real tester, or just go and make sure that it's been unplugged.

Учти, если будет оборван ноль, а фаза так-же будет идти по всему проводу, то индикатор будет светиться по всей длине провода. Он реагирует на обрыв фазгого провода. Поэтому в скрытой в стене проводке, при обрыва только нулевого провода оно будет также светиться!

Not only are those card readers definitely even cheaper, but I think the point is not saving money but making use of things you likely have available already. What if you don't need that card reader anymore? Maybe you've already got several, and this one is just wasting space. It's an induction power detector, it should work so long as there's electrons moving through the wire generating a magnetic field to induce a current in the spring.
You know what people but really sucks and some of these shorts is that you're trying to watch the video see what's going on and the play button and fast forward it's right there in the middle messing up your view. I'm pretty sure the whole point of these videos is to inspire people to think creatively about electronics projects. Personally, I would buy the device from a proper store because if I'm using one of these, it's to verify that I'm working on a circuit that really has been de-energized, and licking the terminals isn't something that ends well.

You'd simply run a wire that's parallel to the lines. Parallel lines would be perpendicular to the magnetic field, which would maximize the amount of induction. The issue though is that you're not likely to be anywhere near close enough to the transmission lines to get any appreciable amount of current like that.
Regardless if that reader was broken or not. Wish I understood electronics. Unfortunately 12v or 110/240 is all cross. But could make a ton of money if I understood smaller electronics an pcb boards ect. I’ve purchased chips an things that were clearly burned out an replaced. But never had any luck. Sucks I throw a ton of boards away easily $500-1200 each. An the problem most of the time got to just be some dirt cheap single component that could be replaced so easily for fractions of a penny. Unfortunately don’t have the understanding of it. Just what few components actually are. But how do they play with each others on a circuit. Unknown. Just know a lot gets thrown out that would be hella resale value with the market in the demand that’s it’s in for these things. Maybe one day

Even if we put every thing aside, if that spring goes direct contact with ac supply there is very good chance it would destry electronic in source.
It never goes near uninsulated points unless you're careless. Easy enough to cover with a piece of insulation regardless.
