You don't always need to use section cuts to create elevations in SketchUp. By using the position camera tool, you can create a clipping plane, that slices through the model without having to deal with organizing section planes.

I appreciate your straight forward teaching ... you're not trying to be a showman, you are a great teacher. Thank you kindly!
Great to learn the camera position method for elevations and plans! Thank you and I have benefitted greatly from the SU/LO books as well.👍
You are right! Your trick is so much simpler and cleaner than section cuts.
It's great for quick scene setup.
This was harder to digest a few years ago, a lot easier now. One of the best and it endures.
Really great tip on using the Position Camera tool as a quick Section tool. Thanks
I had a go at Layout months ago, I kept fiddling with the section tool, it drove me nuts and I gave up. The position camera tool trick has given me new hope. Thank you!
I found this very useful. as you said I was using section cut to set my scene. and from now onwards I will like you shown. thank you ....
When I figured out that trick, it really made a big difference with me too on how I set up my scenes. Like I said in the video, I rarely use section cuts any more. Thanks for the feedback!
Sweet trick with the camera view to replace section cuts
Thank you so much , I've been struggling with layout
Dude! You rock!! Using the camera the way you do saves me a bunch of steps!!! I'm subscribing to your channel .
I'm glad you like that trick. I find it easier than inserting a bunch of section cuts. Less "stuff" to worry about in my model.
thank you so much for this. as simple as it is, the official sketchup tutorials seem to skip over the basic but imperative scene-adding in order to get elevations at the angles i want them. thanks!
Thanks for this, I am always happy to learn something new to make my work easier (work smarter, not harder, right!). That little trick with the position the camera tool along the axes, instead of the section plane tool did it for me this time. Great work!
that position camera tool really saves sectioning time
That position camera is the trick! thanks man
Glad you like it!
Thanks for a really great, simple to use tutorial. 👌👌👌
In Layout, when you import a Sketchup Model set to orthogonal perspective, you can define the scale of the model on the "Sketchup Model" tab.
When you insert dimensions in Layout it will automatically set the scale of the dimensions to match the scale of the model you're snapping to. You can override this by clicking on the dimension, drop the "Dimension Style" tab, and uncheck "Auto Scale".
There is a way to enter "Model Space" in Layout, but I only use it to tweak perspective views.
Thanks so much! I've been struggling with layout for a while and this is the best video I've seen on it.
thanks for tips, especially the position camera one for elevations!
I really liked this one! Great job
enjoyed the section tool tip.. camera position instead of section tool.. nice..
Excellent information included in this video. The camera tools hints are awesome. Thanks
thank you... its very helpful and i never imagined that it is that easy.. thank you very much..
Hey Violeta, I'm glad you figured it out. Let me know if you have trouble with anything else.
Excellent layout demonstration, thanx
very helpful...exactly what I needed
If you liked this video, check out the webinar I just did. Sketchup to LayOut Webinar
great learning tutorials... enjoyed it..keep up the same work with such nice presentation..
best tutorial ever!! totally saved my life!!
10 OUT OF 10, THANKS A MILLION MAN, EXCELLENT VID
I am just now starting to get into Rendering software. I'm sure you'll see some videos on Rendering in the coming months as I learn more about it.
By default, when you insert a model it will take the perspective of how you last saved the model. Once you insert the model, you can double click it to enter navigation mode and orbit the model around. But the best thing to do is create scenes in Sketchup oriented the way you want them to look in Layout. Then once the model is imported, just right click the model, and select the scene you want.
Super helpful thank you!
Excellent tutorial. Thank you
Your videos are great, although I am having a hard time finding an answer: How do you cut plans and export them all at the same size/scale. Or am I missing a key thing about how Sketchup works?
That position camera tool was fantastic. I’m sure I can use that in my workflow. When would you use a section cut instead of position camera and what is the difference.
The biggest difference now is that we now have the Section Fill feature when using Section Planes, which will fill the cut surfaces with a solid color. Both methods have their uses though.
Very helpful. Thank you!
Brilliant. Thank you SO much.
This is Layout 3, which comes with Sketchup Pro 8. You should have the dimension tool though.
That was very helpful. thank you
Old video but I'm trying to use the position camera tool like you did in this video in Sketchup 2018 and it doesn't seams to work the same way. It zooms me in super close and when I zoom out it appears to change the location of where I started dragging the position camera tool. Does this technique still work?
Hi Sara, yes, it still works. It sounds like you may have forgotten to change your camera mode to Parallel Projection before trying this trick?
very educative video ! thank you
Thank you! That was really, really helpful.
EcoEnvious You're welcome. Glad you liked it.
Great video. Thanks!
You could try Artlantis rendering, that gives good details, plus you can add more detail to your sktechup file, or you can also try Lumion 3D. that is very good as well. I have used both.
Thanks Javier!
"X-Media" is just the name of the file. The program used here is "Layout", and you get it when purchase the Pro version of Sketchup. It costs $495. But remember, you can always use the free version of Sketchup for modeling too.
Thanks a lot, that made my day!!
Thanks a lot man ! It was so useful, and it does save a lot of times, Specially for interior designers like me, because we are not gonna need anymore of autoCAD :D
Most of designers don't know the power of autocad in precise modelling and drafting. Anyhow all the best and regards bro
its being my favorite game ! thanks !
Appreciate the tutorial
Thank you! that was helpful.
Do you think we can create poster size blank sheet in layout?
Hello Matt, I just have one question. When I transfer my sketch up model to layout, it doesn't show the same exact measurement or dimension from layout. How can I get the same dimension from Sketchup to layout. It's too annoying, because I have to edit each dimension from layout from the sketchup model I made. Nice tutorial by the way.
Do you any experience using a rendering program with Sketchup? If so, that would be a great video.
How did u remove the green background of sketch up in layout?
I'm in love!
This is so useful!
its really helpful
So well taught:)
can you use the position camera tool and get hidden lines for the cabinets above the cut for example?
Hi, thanks for the informative guide! It really helped, however is there a possible way to reveal section planes on a floor plan in Layout and presenting them via the scrapbook graphics?
Thank you !!!
Super! helpful... thanks...
camera position tool does not work on me as still hide by the object behind it which is different for section cut tool.
can we download the model shown in this tutorial for free ? if so then please mention the link
great tutorial
@MasterSketchup Nice Tutorial! thanks! btw, can layout display the thickness of the lines, depends on their distance to the section plane when we print it?
thanks for this video, it is very helpfull ! I have a question- can i pu rendered elevations in layout with right scale? for example 1:100 or another? please reply
That is one of the best features of LayOut. You have full control over the scale of your model viewports on the page. Dimensions will also automatically detect the scale of the viewport too.
How do I speed up my work, once I click the model I'm working on, layout says not responding. Thanks.
I have one more doubt, when you draw a plan view, you see all the things from the floor to 1.20m height, so yo need to draw - - - - - - -- - - to project those things that are above that height so, is there any way to make sketchup automatically draw those lines for you?
Hi, i find your tutorial very useful but i noticed when using it some of my object is missing in the section view, i wonder if i miss some points or did something wrong in the settings.
When you use the position camera tool to create a clipping plane, any objects in front of the plane will not appear, maybe that's what's happening?
i have an issue when i draw or place something on one page, it shows up on the other pages, and when i erase something on one page it erases on another. How do I stop that from happening?
Wa! Im trying to use the position camera trick but when I let go of the press and hold the camera zooms in, and when I try to zoom out it all moves off! >_< Am I missing a step or something?
Question for Master Sketchup..
At 6:23, just after you let go of the green line, the model "re-centred" itself.. Ive been trying to find a way to quickly re-centre models back to the centre of the screen.. how did you do this?
HappyDays In that particular example, notice how I place my mouse cursor in the lower left corner of the window. I then zoom out with my scroll wheel to effectively "center" the model in the screen. Zooming will always push away from the point where your cursor is. You can also press SHIFT Z to initiate "Zoom extends".
supreme work, can i know what it cost " x-media sketch-up"
hi dear...... i am in trouble... my sketchup is not working..... everytime when i send model to layout. here is a message that your sketchup is not licensed.... so what i can do...... please... i am not able to buy its license
Thankyou..
what version of layout is it? cause i don't have de dimensions tool
WHHAAAIIIT. Can you show me that alternative to section cuts thing again. I'm missing something - drag it parallel to the wall I want to elevate or perpendicular? I don't get those double eyes and I end up in the floor somehow. . .
OHH You Must be in Parallel view! Got it. THanks!
Is there a part 3 for the beginner Tutorials
Jimmy K No part three yet. I'm trying to plan out a new set of beginner tutorials.
How can you improve the quality of a imported drawing in layout. Drawing sent to layout is very pixilated..blocky.
i have same problem as you, did you know the solution? i didn't found it yet 😫
how to import layout into sketchup?
"Puño" en país significa "tacaño"
I'm never using the section plane tool again. :)
Duh! Never mind...I wasn't setting my camera view to parallel! ¬¬
i am anticipating rendered views
is this hashinshin?

And you are not eve an architect. You surely deserve your title ;)
The anti-socialism ad that runs first is interesting but misdirected. Brazils' problem is corruption.
Great video! thanks!
Super helpful! Thanks!
