  • Kwaku and Ian talk with special guest Stephen Smoot about polytheism.
    The 3 Mormons talk about monolatry or the idea that though there are multiple gods, there is one supreme God. Stephen says that monolatry can be thought of as combining the ideas of monotheism and polytheism.
    Kwaku brings up the concern of Mormons believing in something similar to Greek gods. Ian explains that Mormons don't believe in a similar idea as Greek gods but that they believe in one God while there may exist other gods. We can't "pick and choose" a god to whom we subscribe.
    Stephen quotes Mark Smith to illustrate that monotheism and polytheism are both ideas of recent age-- that the two words don't mean much for the ancient Israelites. So perhaps we need to think of polytheism differently.

      Mormons should consider that the god of Mormonism can't preserve their own text (scriptures), because the mormon religion believes that god gave his word (the bible) and it was then currpted. Who's to say that the mormon scriptures can't be currupted again? You can't say that the mormon scriptures can't be currupted, because it already has been currupted, then was supposedly "restored". Christians have a preserved text (the Greek and hebrew)...You can use this same reasoning to jehovah witnesses and muslims... may the Holy Spirit open the eyes of all who read this, amen!

      And if there were miracles wrought then, why has God ceased to be God of miracles and yet be an unchangeable Being ? And behold, I say unto you he changeth not ;if so he would cease to be God; and he ceaseth not to be God; and is a God of miracles.
      Moroni 7:22 8:18 {God has always been} Mormon 9:9-10

      For do we not read that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing ?

And there have been plenty of times where I was genuinely impressed at how well they back up the Mormon doctrine and the Book of Mormon with biblical text. However, with this particular discussion, it seemed like biblical scripture had to be stretched pretty far to get it tie in with this particular doctrine. Still super interesting, just not completely sound or valid.

      Their point seems line a stretch only because you have read english translation with modern assumptions in it. Early christian writings are also clear on this plurality of gods issue. Isaiah passagrs need to be understood the same way Paul spoke in 1 cor chapter 7, even though there are many gods, to us there is only one god. Paul even me tions these gods in heavens, so it would be weird then to think that he spoke of idols since such would not be in heaven. So there never has been a time when Israel has had any other God apart fron Jehovah, neither will there be a time when Israel has otjer God besides him. It is covenant language like Paul's was. It doesnt mean there are no others, obly that Israel has no other to worship. God even says it in Deutrenomy that Israel is not supposed to worship the hosts of heaven and other gods which he did not command them to worship. So here it is not that gods dont exist, it is that God has not commanded to worship them. Tje false Gods are idols, statues and images made of stone and metal that are explicitly false and not alive.

    • @germanslice
      @germanslice 4 года назад +2

      @@jaredite8388 God does not counsel with dead gods of wood and stone that are down on the earth which have no life in them, but God does counsel with other living gods in heaven because there is a kingdom of God up in heaven.. So when we are talking about God we have to mention the kingdom of God as well. not just only the Godhead, or how else do you think there is only one true God in heaven, because God is one in power and authority throughout all the hosts of heaven. he is not just one in person. That is how its possible for many gods to be one with God.

    • @anthonym2499

      John 10 is not a stretch, it is clearly stated by Jesus himself. John 10:30, I and my Father are one; 33, thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
      John 17 wraps it all up with a bow on top. John 17:11, ...that they may be one, as we are; 20,21, neither do I pray for these alone ... that they may all be one; Father in me, I in thee, that they also may be one in us.
      Also, the Bible uses the phrases: God of gods, Lord of lords, and King of kings. Perhaps a better connotation using something more familiar to us today would be: Father of fathers.
      The layman's version of the Trinity is: Three Persons, one God. The Mormon concept is just better at the math.

And the Holy Ghost as being perfectly Unified with the Father and Son. They are one. So yeah henotheism is promising as a definition, but, from what I understand of that term it limits God to one geographic location, which makes the term inaccurate. So it doesn't perfectly fit. Theological gymnastics. Maybe we need to come up with a new theological term for LDS beliefs. It's tough! I get why Christian leaders 400 years after Christ had to come up with the trinity in order for it to fit monotheism. I guess monotheism seems less pagan and more respectable eh? But it is what it is.

    In all of this discussion about multiple gods, it's odd the concept of 'Heavenly Mother' did not come up once. Clearly she exists in Mormon theology since "Heavenly parents" is mentioned in one of the first missionary pamphlets. The missionary explanation was that Heavenly Father made her off-limits since he was afraid people would disrespect her (my paraphrasing), but what decent mother actually hopes for zero contact with her children? Do Mormons believe she's that fragile, that incapable, or what? . . . I don't mean this in a snarky way; I'm genuinely curious.

      Such stupid nonsense. These people had hebrew records which they took from Jerusalem with them when they left the city. They taught their people from those records so of course you're going to get Biblical info mixed in from their writings. Get your information from a knowledgeable source. The Book of Mormon is a 2nd testament of the gospel of Jesus Christ to work hand in hand with the Bible. You are missing so much more you can add to your knowledge and strengthen your faith in God by studying all his words. But do what you wish. I am sad for all people who refuse to keep searching out all the truths that Jesus gives the world. That's not explicit . Jesus in the same gospel said the Father is the *only* true God, which means that John 1:1 is understood that God's promise/word to Israelites was divine, and that promise became reality as a flesh. If you want to take John 1:1 by letters, you would have to believe that there's God with God which means 2 Gods eventualty. However, Jesus in the same gospel tells you that the Father is *ONLY* true God.

Also interesting to question is whether there is some super supreme entity that is universally GOD, to all Gods, kingdoms, dimensions, universes, multiverses and realities?

    The only argument Mormons should have against the "You are polytheist!" argument is one verse.
    Moses 2:1 "And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Moses, saying: Behold, I reveal unto you concerning this heaven, and this earth; write the words which I speak."
    Mormons don't need to try and break down all these other scriptures because its just giving more ammo to other people as they can interpret the same verse/chapter/book different ways. They can also bring out quotes from many random other scholars, sociologist, archaeologist and any other field of study.

      First you have to understand who or what GOD is. Your first step is to realize that until we meet him we will never truly know, so we depend on what we think he has given us as writings. Remember the word GOD implies someone who is all powerful, all knowing, all present. So it is not us humans who control what he is to be. We do not determine Gods powers. So if he said i am the only God i know of no other, yet the Father states he is GOD and the Son states he is God and the Holy Spirit states he is God then who are we to say but, but, but thaaat makes no sense to my weak human mind. Lets get this straight because the LDS are really confused about this,
    John 10
    34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
    35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
    Psalm 82
    6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
    This verse doesn’t say that man can become a god, it says ye are ( present tense ) gods. And even Mormons do not believe they are gods now. Furthermore, Jesus is quoting from Ps. 82:6 and by reading the verse in its context, we can see that the gods being referred to here are just human judges, remember “who die like men “, and Mormon theology does not allow them to die after they have obtained godhood.
    There, please do not quote this incorrectly again. Even the BOM does not teach multiple GODS in-fact it states the opposite.

      We're not confused at all because we know there exists a kingdom of God. And the 24 elders they already got their crowns of eternal life that John saw in Revelations who were seated around God the Father and the Lamb on their thrones.

      @candersander4263 I think it's you who is confused - let's look at the context -
      32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
      33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
      34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
      35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
      36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
      - So explain to me why Jesus uses mere human judges to argue against their accusation of blasphemy ? And let's see if we can think of a god who died - - -
      Perhaps you should reconsider your definition of godhood.

My family is Catholic (i'm not) and the way they tried to teach me growing up, was Catholicism is correct, no questions. Never really a connection to God and wasn't allowed to ask questions. And it came to pass that I beheld, after they had dwindled in unbelief they became a dark, and loathsome, and a filthy people, full of idleness and all manner of abominations.
      { white skin is good }
      Jacob 3:8
      O my brethren, I fear that unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins will be whiter than yours, when ye shall be brought with
      them before the throne of God.
      You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, un comely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind......Cain slew his brother......and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and then another curse is pronounced upon the same race--that they should be the " servant of servants ";
      Journal of Discourses 7:290
      Brigham Young
      We will first inquire into the results of the approbation or dis-pleasure of God upon a people, starting with the belief that a black skin is
      a mark of the curse of Heaven placed upon some portions of mankind. Some, however, will argue that a black skin is not a curse, nor a white skin a blessing. In fact, some have been so foolish as to believe and say that a black skin is a blessing, and that the negro is the
      finest type of a perfect man that exists on the earth: but to us such teachings are foolishness. We understand that when God made
      man in his own image and pronounced him very good, that he made him him white. We have no record of any of God's favored servants being of a black race......every angel who ever brought a message of God's mercy to man was beautiful to look upon, clad in the purest white.
      Juvenile Instructor vol 3:157
      ...The Devil has black skin
      …but let them apostatize, and they will become gray-haired, wrinkled, and black, just like the Devil." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 5, p. 332)
      “Had I anything to do with the Negro, I would confine them by strict law to their own species, and put them on a national equalization.”
      History of the Church 5:217-18
      Brigham Young
      And after the flood we are told that the curse that had been pronounced upon Cain was continued through Ham’s wife, as he had married
      a wife of that seed. And why did it pass through the flood? Because it was necessary that the devil should have a representative upon the earth as well as God.
      Journal of Discourses 22:304
      John Taylor
      The Negro represents The Devil on earth
      Why is, in fact, that we should have a devil? Why did the Lord not kill him long ago? Because he could not do without him. He needed the devil and a great many of those who do his bidding to keep men straight, that we may learn to place our dependence upon God, and trust
      in Him, andto observe his laws and keep his commandments. When he destroyed the inhabitants of the antediluvian world, he suffered a descendent of Cain to come through the flood in order that he might be properly represented upon the earth.
      Journal of Discourses 23:336
      John Taylor
      We have the smartest women in the world, the best cooks, the best mothers;....We are the smartest people in the world.I remarked to brother Kimball last Sabbath, that this people are the best people that ever lived upon the earth;
      Journal of Discourse 6:176 4:269

      This took place in the early spring of 1820. In September , 1823, and at later times, Joseph Smith received visitations from Moroni,....... an angel of light,........ who revealed the resting place of the ancient record from which The Book of Mormon was afterward translated.

    Joseph Smith's view of God changed from 1820 up to 1844. He slowly introduced the concept of the plurality of Gods from the book of Abraham and the King Follet discourse. For a great unbiased study on this topic see James White's book 'Is the Mormon my Brother?'

      Jordan Woods Every prophet evolved on his understanding of God. He was originally taught God was all three, the unity of the three beings, and as he grew and progressed he realized God is the Father. We pray to the Father, not all three beings. The three beings are not co-equal. For the Father came before the son. It's a good thing that he grew, because we all have to grow and gain a true understanding of the nature of God.

Regarding personification languages and rhetorical posturing in the ancient texts, I believe everybody needs to know this information to better understand the actual ideas and meanings contained in Isaiah passages.

      Mormon Prophets claim the moon and the SUN are inhabited
      Oliver B. Huntington.
      Astronomers and philosophers have, from time almost immemorial until very recently, asserted that the moon was uninhabited,
      that it had no atmosphere, etc. But recent discoveries, through the means of powerful telescopes, have given scientists a doubt or
      two upon the old theory.
      Nearly all the great discoveries of men in the last half century have, in one way or another, either directly or indirectly, contributed
      to prove Joseph Smith to be a Prophet.
      As far back as 1817, I know that he said the moon was inhabited by men and women the same as this earth, and that they lived
      to a greater age than we do--that they live generally to near the age of 1000 years.
      He described the men as averaging near six feet in height, and dressing quite uniformly in something near the Quaker style. In
      my patriarchal blessing, given by the father of Joseph the Prophet, in Kirtland, 1837, I was told that I should preach the gospel before I was 21 years of age; that I should preach the gospel to the inhabitants upon the islands of the sea, and-to the inhabitants
      of the moon, even the planet you can now behold with your eyes.
      The Young Woman's Journal, published by the Young Ladies' Mutual Improvement Associations of Zion, 1892, vol. 3,pp.
      263-64
      I will tell you who the real fanatics are: they are they who adopt false principles and ideas as facts, and try to establish a superstructure upon a false foundation....If our religion is of this character we want to know it;
      Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon?...when you inqure about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the ignorant of their fellows. So it is
      in regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life there? No
      question of it; it was not made in vain. It was made to give light to those who dwell upon it, and to other planets
      Journal of Discourses 13:271
      Brigham Young
      ...Tall Tales
      During our evening conversations, Joseph would occasionally give us some of the most amusing recitals that could be imagined. He would describe the ancient inhabitants of this continent, their dress, mode of travelling, and their animals upon which they rode; their cities, their buildings, with every particular; their mode of warfare; and also their religious worship. This he would do with as much ease, seemingly, as if he had spent his whole life with them.
      History of Joseph Smith by his Mother 1954 ed.83

      Mormons would say your question doesn't make sense. It assumes that a gradation of "power" exists among those who inherit the same glory God has. I personally find the usual "worshipfulness" qualities of power, knowledge, and goodness cause us to create an idealised God that is nothing like the real God.

    • @johnmeadow1426
      @johnmeadow1426 6 лет назад +1

      @O. Gray I guess it depends on what you mean by "real God". Multiple beings that have the same eternal existence and are equal in power and glory are probably not obsessed with which of them is the best or really in charge. If you're wondering is there a god that heavenly father answers to, making him more of a middle management figure, I don't think there is one. Heavenly father represents the highest existence possible.
      As far as what modern revelation does to our reverence of the OT, I would say nearly all Mormons treat the Bible as word of God and ultimate authority on doctrine and morality. However; if you believe in modern revelation, then the newest revelations supercede older ones in cases where there is contradictions. I'd have to say I take the radical position that modern revelation should be regarded as more valuable than the Bible.

    • @johnmeadow1426
      @johnmeadow1426 6 лет назад

      @O. Gray god said allot of things about himself in the OT, some of them seemingly contradictions. As far as supporting multiple gods I think the best one is Genesis where God says "let us make man in our image after our likeness". He is seemingly talking to someone else that is like him, but it's literally the beginning of time when there shouldn't be any other beings, let alone one like god.

    I like your show, even though I disagree with most of what you say. I think the word that describes what you're talking about is henotheism. You speak about other gods, and how Mormons only worship Heavenly Father, but you didn't speak enough about how Mormons themselves can become gods and goddesses themselves through exaltation. What confuses me is how can a Mormon who makes it to the Celestial Kingdom be with Heavenly Father if he/she is going to get their own planet/universe? Is my understanding correct? If they get their own heavenly realm and start producing their own spirit children, how do they stay with their own Heavenly Father eternally? How do they stay forever with their own families if each exalted couple gets their own planet/universe? How can they populate a planet, or even a universe with only one wife/goddess? Will there be polygamy in heaven? Who was the first human to become a god? The idea of progression creates the problem of infinite regress. If Heavenly Father is made of flesh and bone, why/how does he produce spirit children? Doesn't it make more sense if He were spirit? We know the universe is expanding rapidly and will eventually become extremely cold and dark. What will happen to Heavenly Father when this universe dies? I don't think the Bible can be used to disprove or critique Mormonism. Ironically, the way I see it, the BOM is what dissuaded me from Mormonism. The Native Americans are not from the Israelites, and this has been demonstrated by DNA evidence. Linguistically, Native American languages are related to Siberian languages. Wouldn't we be finding an abundance of evidence near Cumorah Hill, NY if those BOM battles took place? There was no steel, wheat, elephants, or even horses in the Americas during BOM times.

    It clearly says in the Ten Commandments Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Which is straight from God's mouth. So yes there are multiple gods. It's just that Yahweh the god of Israel is the creator of the universe, and that he is saying we should only worship and follow his and his sons teachings. From what I've read, there is nothing in the Bible old or new testament, or the Book of Mormon stating that Yahweh the god of Israel is the only Divine being in the universe. Why else would God himself have made a Commandment that we should not follow any other gods except him?

    • @bakachan3601
      @bakachan3601 5 лет назад

      +Julie Ann I don't know if that's what that commandment meant, but I don't disagree with your statement.
      The book of Mormon says to repent and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, and His father, not to obey the words of Joseph Smith.
      Which as I understand them, are actually quite contradictory to what the book of Mormon teaches.

    Another awkward fact for Mormons is that melchizedek was not a monolatrist, but a polytheist, and he got Abraham to honor his own favorite God. Genesis 14:18-20. You lose it in the KJV because King James and his merry men decided to translate El Elyon as The Most High and El as The Lord. That makes it even more awkward since they now make Melchizedek the priest of a higher God than what Mormons would call Elohim and Joseph didn't catch that when he "translated" the bible

    This is funny. We are all the children of God. Who said that? What does that make us? -The Mormons always go on about the Sons of God. They say that the concept of the Sons of God goes way back in history. Well back in those times God was making big miracles. It is said Lord Krishna (who was said to have been as black as coal, not blue) had over 16000 sons by a miracle who all looked like Him. I don't know whether this is true or not. So you have the Sons of God. These Sons of God, (all black) would have spread and mixed therefore we are all made of His physical material. Now Jesus did the same thing in a way. When we take the sacrament we become part of His body. He changes our flesh into heavenly material.

    • @govithgovith7855
      @govithgovith7855 6 лет назад

      Another thing that I found funny is that Lord Krishna calls Himself The Father and Lord Jesus Christ calls Himself the Son. So we are the offspring of Lord Krishna and the brothers and sisters of Lord Jesus. My goodness Jesus even carries Lord Krishna's name as His surname. Jesus Christ ...

    Non-denominative christian here. I think monolatry is essentially right. God is the "host of hosts." He is the God of gods. The lesser gods are more imperfect and prone to sin. One third of them, in fact, fell to earth and ruled like gods. God is a host to lesser beings; some of those lesser beings are, themselves, hosts of lesser beings.
    This idea doesn't bother me. Of all the things to attack Mormonism over, I don't think that is the right avenue. My contention is with the testimony of Joseph Smith and the angel Maroni. It's as difficult to prove as the existence and nature of Christ. But I will go where God leads me. I'd ask Him to take me to the truth whether I like it or not.

      remraf saari... The Mormon "Jesus" IS changeable...
      The biblical Jesus is the One who's unchangeable... The biblical One reemphasized God's ideal for people joining together in marriage in Matt19:4-6, Mark10-6-9, etc; that it was still the same as it had been from the beginning, "one man for one woman."
      The BoM+'s "Jesus" CHANGED that ideal, said in the 1800's that the way to get into the highest heaven was embracing POLYGAMY (D&C132:1-4)... For Mormons, the truth from the Bible is eclipsed by the higher authority of the BoM+ (in their eyes)... Background for the story, given in Gen15&16 of the Bible, is no longer trusted... They evidently believe that the reason there was polygamy in OT days was b/c "Jesus" (D&C132:24) COMMANDED it of Abraham, and Abraham obeyed (D&C132:34,35 &65)...
      Either the Bible is not telling the truth, or JS (as "Jesus" supposed mouthpiece) is not telling the truth... My vote is for JS... Gen16:2 clearly states that the decision to add another woman to the mix, was a "human" decision, Abram and Sarai's, NOT GOD'S...
      JS is successful at further CHANGING/damaging Jesus' loving character when he threatens to DESTROY those who won't submit to polygamy (D&C132:54 &64)... We're told in Luke9:56 of the BIBLE that Jesus' purpose in coming is NOT to destroy people's lives but to SAVE them...
      Moroni8:18 and Mormon9:9&10 are just empty words b/c they're not backed up by the reality of Mormon history...

If this weren't true you wouldn't be so determined to destroy god, because you can't destroy something that doesn't exist. God has got an eternal intelligence, and so also the spirit of man has the same eternal intelligence because Jesus had to progress when he stepped down from his place as Jehovah in heaven when he came down to this earth, he did not have full power of his Father yet when he was born in the manger in the flesh as Jesus.... He didn't obtain full power of his Father not until he was Resurrected. Even before he was born to earth he did not have full power because he didn't even have a Celestial Resurrected body like his Father God had, so he had to come down to the earth to obtain a body, he tells us the process of development towards becoming like God his Father in Revelations Chapters 2 and 3 when he was on the earth. When he says on earth he overcame all things by faith in order to be with his Father to dwell with him in all his glory...

      Jesus is not all-knowing neither is he all-powerful before his resurrection because without having a glorified resurrected body inherited from God his Father he could not become perfect like God without having that resurrected body and would not become fully developed like his Father not until he came down from heaven to earth being sent down by the Father and then was resurrected by the Father with an glorified and exalted perfect body like the Father.. But even when resurrected he would not still know everything that God the Father knows. So Jesus does not know the time of his own coming to show himself to the world at the Second Coming,, only his Father God knows the time and the hour to send him down.....The Son does not Know, neither does man know and neither do the angels in heaven know and those who say they know what hour Jesus will come are just arrogant of God's timing to try to compare their own limited mortal perspective with God's eternal perspective.... Jesus does not know everything that God the Father knows, That makes them 2 separate beings with 2 separate wills because one does not know everything that the other one knows..... If they were the same person, they would know everything that the other one knows. Its simple as that.
      So its possible to come to earth all sinless, and blameless before God but still not be fully developed.... And Jesus wasn't fully developed when he was born to earth as he admitted it himself that he had to overcome all things by obedience to get that full development to become just like his Father God. We see that very clearly in the garden and on the cross in doing the Father's will and Jesus not doing his own Will. 'Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass by me, not as I will, but as thou wilt.'' . So Jesus was not fully developed when he had existed in his pre earth state as Jehovah in the Old Testament as a spirit being of light and glory, because he had not yet come down to earth to obtain a mortal body of flesh and bones and to have that body all resurrected and exalted to become perfect just like God the Father..

Well I think its Because of their love, unity, and harmony and omnipresence and omniscience they have with each other... across the eternities. We don't know alot of detail about the other eternal worlds. We may find out more when we progress past this life. So there is a kingdom of God that exists and God the Father rules in that kingdom. God The Father is known as LORD God Almighty, The Lord of ALL Hosts, The Father of Lights, Man of Holiness, The Most High God. This is the Supreme Being that the Lord Jesus Christ worships, the Lord Almighty God known as Elohim.. However the Saints worship both the Father and also the Lamb as shown in the Book of Revelations.

I find no conflict with God having a co-poreal nature and also being plural. Because I know there exists a kingdom of God that God the Father and his Son are part of as well as the Father having his own kingdom. The Saints when they have the spirit of God in them have the kingdom of God within themselves, and if they hold out faithful and live those higher laws of God they will become part of that heavenly kingdom to dwell with God in glory. We teach that the Holy Ghost is a spirit personage, the third member of the Godhead and he can only be in one location at a time, but we also teach that the Spirit of the Lord is the light of Christ that exists in all things in this universe that comes out from the Father. We teach that God the Father is a eternal glorified tangible resurrected being the same as the Son that radiates out the light of Christ to all the universe so he may be in all things. through all things, above all things because they are omnipresent beings. So yes there are many heavenly beings but because they all have the light of Christ whether in this universe or in other universes these heavenly beings are all at one with God because of that omnipresent spirit that they dwell in. That's why there is only one God, for God is a race a society of advanced heavenly beings who have entered into God's rest to become like him...
      If this was not true that there was not a society up in heaven that is like God then John would not have seen the heavenly kings sitting all around on their thrones with their crowns of glory worshipping God the Father and the Lamb of God up in the celestial kingdom. Why then are all these exalted men worshipping God and falling down all on their faces? They are not worshipping themselves just because they have kept God's laws to become like God to enter into his rest and glory is why they are all sitting on the thrones.. They are worshipping God the Father and the Lamb.

In one aspect, our Father may have brothers and sisters, and a father and mother and wife(s) - and we are his children, capable of becoming just like Him [does this constitute numerous Gods? or one nature of God existing within multiple beings?] In another aspect, the being who is our Father in Heaven, is our God and the only one with whom we have to do (Heb 4:13); as opposed to rejecting Him and wanting to live with some uncle God and his family.

    Quoting "bible scholars" and "theologians" to support doctrine and dogma is a dangerous habit to form. God has spoken to us directly via His written word which the Holy Spirit helps us to understand and apply to our lives. Scholars and theologians come and go and so do their "theories" and "teachings". What makes their understanding of scripture more valid or more accurate than mine or yours? Nothing really. You can actually shop around and find one of these scholars to support just about any position you want to take on scripture; from very liberal to ultra-conservative. Stand on the written word of God and trust in the Holy Spirit and you will never be led astray. Remember however that the Holy Spirit works with your level of intellectual ability and doesn't reveal complex theories and formulas that can't be understood. Humility and sincere desire to know about God and his will are the two most important tools anyone needs; not scholars, theologians and their confusing and often conflicting teachings.

    I'm five years late but here goes, Jesus was the word made flesh, Jesus was the word of God before the universe existed and when it came forward according to the Christian bible it came from the word. Jesus was not just a man who became a god he was unlike all other humans begotten and not made, born of a virgin and one with the Father. And to finish this was actually what it says in the first book of Mormon according to David Whitmer who left the LDS when Joseph Smith developed the idea of a plurality of gods. He regarded Smith as a fallen prophet.

    This is quite long but if you are up for reading it you can, if not then whatever. This is taken from the book so he does cite sources but I just copied it so you will see numbers that should lead to a source. If any of the 3 Mormons from the video read this can they give me their opinions on it
    "So let's be clear on what Latter-day Saints do not believe. They do not believe that humans will ever be equal to or independent of God. His status in relation to us is not in any way compromised. There is only one source of light, knowledge, and power in the universe. If through the gospel of Jesus Christ and the grace of God we receive the fulness of God (Eph. 3:19) so that we also can be called gods, humans will never become "ultimate" beings in the abstract, philosophical sense. That is, even as they sit on thrones exercising the powers of gods, those who have become gods by grace remain eternally subordinate to the source of that grace; they are extensions of their Father's power and agents of his will. They will continue to worship and serve the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost forever, and will worship and serve no one and nothing else.
    If the Latter-day Saints had chosen to refer to such glorified beings as "angels" instead of "gods," it is unlikely anyone outside the LDS church would have objected to the doctrine per se. It seems that it is only the term that is objectionable. And yet the scriptures themselves often use the word god in this limited sense to refer to nonultimate beings.
    For example, in Ps. 8 the word gods (Hebrew elohim) is used in reference to the angels: "What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels [elohim], and hast crowned him with glory and honour." (Vv. 4-5.) Though the Hebrew reads "gods" (elohim), translators and commentators from the Septuagint on, including the author of Hebrews in the New Testament, have understood the expression to refer to the angels (see Heb. 2:7). The term gods is here applied to beings other than God. Deuteronomy 10: 17, Josh. 22:22, and Ps. 136:2 all insist that God is a "God of gods." Clearly this doesn't mean that there are divine competitors out in the cosmos somewhere; rather, these passages probably also refer to the angels in their divinely appointed roles. If the angels can, in some sense, be considered divine beings because they exercise the powers of God and act as his agents, then the one God they serve is correctly considered a "God of gods." Scholars have long known, and the Dead Sea Scrolls and other literature of the period have now proven, that the Jews in Jesus' day commonly referred to the angels as "gods" (Hebrew elim or elohim) in this nonultimate sense. 22 This is not because the Jews were polytheists, but because they used the term god in a limited sense to refer to other beings associated with God whom he allowed the privilege of exercising divine powers.
    But human beings are also called "gods" in scripture, probably for the same reasons that the angels are-they, as well as the angels, can exercise the powers of God and act as his agents. Thus Moses is designated a "god to Pharaoh" (Ex. 7:1). This doesn't mean that Moses had become an exalted or ultimate being, but only that he had been given divine powers and was authorized to represent God to Pharaoh, even to the point of speaking God's word in the first person. If the scriptures can refer to a mortal human being like Moses as a "god" in this sense, then surely immortal human beings who inherit the fulness of God's powers and authority in the resurrection can be understood to be "gods" in the same sense.
    In Ex. 21:6 and 22:8-9 human judges are referred to in the Hebrew text as elohim ("gods"). In Ps. 45:6 the king is referred to as an elohim. Human leaders and judges are also referred to as "gods" in the following passage from the book of Psalms: "God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods .... I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes." (Ps. 82:1,6-7 Jewish and Christian biblical scholars alike have understood this passage as applying the term sods to human beings. According to James S. Ackerman, who is not a Mormon, "the overwhelming majority of commentators have interpreted this passage as referring to Israelite judges who were called 'gods' because they had the high responsibility of dispensing justice according to God's Law." 23
    In the New Testament, at John 10:34-36, we read that Jesus himself quoted Ps. 82:6 and interpreted the term gods as referring to human beings who had received the word of God: "Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?" In other words, 'If the scriptures [Ps. 82] can refer to mortals who receive the word of God as "gods," then why get upset with me for merely saying I am the Son of God?' The Savior's argument was effective precisely because the scripture does use the term gods in this limited way to refer to human beings. According to J. A. Emerton, who is also not a Mormon, "most exegetes are agreed that the argu- ment is intended to prove that men can, in certain circumstances, be called gods .... [Jesus] goes back to fundamental principles and argues, more generally, that the word 'god' can, in certain circumstances, be applied to beings other than God himself, to whom he has committed authority." 24
    And that, in a nutshell, is the LDS view. Whether in this life or the next, through Christ human beings can be given the powers of God and the authority of God. Those who receive this great inheritance can properly be called gods. They are not gods in the Greek philosophic sense of "ultimate beings," nor do they compete with God, the source of their inheritance, as objects of worship. They remain eternally his begotten sons and daughters -therefore, never equal to him nor independent of him. Orthodox theologians may argue that Latter-day Saints shouldn't use the term gods for nonultimate beings, but this is because the Latter-day Saints' .use of the term violates Platonic rather than biblical definitions. Both in the scriptures and in earliest Christianity those who received the word of God were called gods.
    I don't need to repeat here the views of Christian saints and theologians cited above on the doctrine of deification. But it should be noted that for them, as for the Latter-day Saints, the doctrine of deification implied a plurality of "gods" but not a plurality of Gods. That is, it did not imply polytheism. Saint Clement of Alexandria was surely both a monotheist and a Christian, and yet he believed that those who are perfected through the gospel of Christ "are called by the appellation of gods, being destined to sit on thrones with the other gods that have been first installed in their places by the Savior." 25 This is good LDS doctrine. If Clement, the Christian saint and theologian, could teach that human beings will be called gods and will sit on thrones with others who have been made gods by Jesus Christ, how in all fairness can Joseph Smith be declared a polytheist and a non-Christian for teaching the same thing? In harmony with widely recognized scriptural and historical precedents, Latter-day Saints use the term gods to describe those who will, through the grace of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ, receive of God's fulness - of his divine powers and pre-rogatives-in the resurrection. Thus, for Latter-day Saints the question "Is there more than one god?" is not the same as "Is there more than one source of power or object of worship in the universe?" For Latter-day Saints, as for Saint Clement, the answer to the former is yes, but the answer to the latter is no. For Latter-day Saints the term god is a title which can be extended to those who receive the power and authority of God as promised to the faithful in the scriptures; but such an extension of that title does not challenge, limit, or infringe upon the ultimate and absolute position and authority of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
    When anti-Mormon critics interpret Exodus ?: 1, Deut. 10:1 ?, Ps. 8:5 (in Hebrew), Ps. 45:6, Ps. 82:6, or John 10:34-36, they go to great lengths to clarify that these scriptures use the term god in a limited sense and that therefore they do not involve any polytheism-there may be more than one "god," but there is only one God. When they discuss Latter-day Saint writings that use the term god in the same sense, however, the critics seldom offer the same courtesy. Instead they disallow any limited sense in which the term gods can be used when that term occurs in LDS sources, thereby distorting and misinterpreting our doctrine, and then accuse us of being "polytheists" for speaking of "gods" in a sense for which there are valid scriptural and historical precedents.
    Other Christian saints, theologians, and writers-both ancient and modern-have believed human beings can become "gods" but have not been accused of polytheism, because the "gods" in this sense were viewed as remaining forever subordinate to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Since this is also the doctrine of the Latter-day Saints, they also ought to enjoy the same defense against the charge of polytheism. Since these other Christians and the Latter-day Saints share the same doctrine, they should share the same fate; either make polytheist heretics of the saints, theologians, and writers in question, or allow the Latter-day Saints to be considered worshippers of the one true God.

      Correct, we worship the Father as the head god of his Kingdom even though we know about the other gods and their kingdoms.

    Latter day saints don't worship one god. The godhead, father, son & holy spirit, which is 3, are worshipped as one, just as scripture describes

    Fascinating video. This, of course, is one area with which we (Muslims) are in stark contrast to you (LDS). This helps articulate the differences, and the reasons you believe as you do. I agree that modern scholarship does indicate that the Bible (especially the Old Testament) is more henotheistic than monotheistic in many passages.
    One of the keys in this discussion is what is meant by the term "god". Many pagan "gods" of ancient myth bear little resemblance to what we would call "God"--they have limited power, they have imperfect foreknowledge, they themselves are subject to fate, etc. Indeed, what traditional Christianity and Islam term "Angels" (or Islamic Jinn) have powers that would rival those of the ancient pagan gods...or even today, what Marvel Superheroes are capable of (and with Thor it's pretty explicit.) However, most non-Mormon Christians, Jews, and Muslims would describe God as the Eternal One, without beginning or ending, Creator of all, all-knowing, and all-powerful. Many Christians will also add Omnipresence and that God has no body; however, the idea of God having a body is actually one that isn't unique to Mormonism--some Muslims of the Athiri school will accept that when it describes Allah as having a "hand" or "face" it is literal, but "unlike anything created" and refuse to speculate on what it means...only accepting that those in Paradise will be able to see his face. Other Muslims view these descriptions as anthropomorphisms and are not meant to be taken literally.) The idea that God literally has children (in LDS theology and also among the pre-Islamic Arab pagans), however, is rejected explicitly in Islam (see Sura 112, Al-Ikhlas, in the Holy Quran).
    10:30 This was a bit misleading, though, in that Akhenaten made a radical break with Egyptian religion, exalting Aten and forbidding the worship of other gods (this is one reason he and his queen was reviled after his death, when Akhenaten's reforms were repudiated and the old gods were reinstated.) One might argue that Akhenaten's cult was henotheist or Monolatry, but his attack directly on all other old gods of Egypt made it pretty clear that he wasn't a polytheist in the pagan sense. So saying that all the ancient Egyptians were polytheists isn't entirely accurate.
