My first flight by myself is Economy on XiamenAir from Sydney to Xiamen onboard there new Boeing 787-8 which is clean and overall experience is excellent and so is the Customer Service and the Flight Crew is friendly and welcoming plus way better than Hainan Airlines in my opinion based on a previous overall unpleasant experience with Hainan Airlines. I would Highly Recommend you to review XiamenAir to Xiamen.

My first solo flight? November 1978. Age 22 on Eastern Airlines (RIP), DCA-RDU-CAE on DC-9-30's down to visit my grandmother for Thanksgiving weekend. Drove up from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg on a nasty, rainy afternoon for the early evening flight on the day before Thanksgiving. That trip is still memorable for a number of reasons. Not the last of which was the woman sitting next to me! Let's just say she should've showered "afterwards" before getting on the plane! When I got to CAE, I plugged my 2-meter transceiver into the cigarette lighter for power, popped a 5/8 wave mag-mount whip on the roof of my Mercury Zephyr rental (a horror show of a car!) and got on the air via the the repeater on the WRLK-TV tower in Killian. Met up on air with a couple of other hams and we all got together at the Ramada Inn in West Columbia for supper. Had a couple of drinks with my meal and drove on down to Wagener. Overshot my grandmother's house and had to turn around in the parking lot of a "well-known roadhouse". Next day while at my Uncle Claibourne and Aunt Mertie's house for the big family dinner, several of my college-age cousins and I got the idea of going to a joint called "Mammy's Shanty" late the next night. My cousin Marion goes and says "John, from when we stop the car until we leave don't open your mouth or our asses are dead! (My 'Yankee' accent!) Mammy's Shanty was for many years the "most frequently dispatched address" for the Columbia Police Department. What kind of place was it? Chicken wire around the stage, for one thing! The music was strictly "country". No "western"! My grandmother (and her nieces and nephews, parents of my cousins) overheard us and quickly put a stop to our "plan". The trip on Sunday back to DCA was memorable as my assigned seat CAE-CLT was next to Congressman Floyd Spence, who was second only to L. Mendel Rivers in terms of modern South Carolina Congressional legends. The trip back was also on DC-9's First flight overall? May 17, 1965, TWA on a B-707-331, IAD-LHR when I was nine years old...
Paul, I've seen as bad, if not worse here in the U.S. One of the reasons why I've not willingly flown since 2010 (Virgin America (RIP) IAD-LAX, RT. And, not at all since 2013 Looks like you had a truly wretched flight. Hopefully my next flight (Next month on Southwest) will be much better than your Hainan experience!

My first airline that I flew was Canadian Airlines from YXU to YYZ to HNL. This was back in 1995. They served a wonderful dinner of roast beef, potatoes, and green beans on the 10 hour flight. Then offered a some sandwiches about two hours before arriving in HNL. My return flight was equally good. Again the dinner was the roast beef. They had a decent selection of movies shown on the main screen but I decided to get some sleep on both long flights. There were no personal TVs so I passed the time by reading and listening to music and napping. Overall my impression of flying was very favourable. This experience in economy is the bar for which I judge my travel experiences to this day.

No jetway, just walked from the gate over to the plane. We were served a full hot breakfast during the 2 hour flight in Coach(Economy). The flight attendants were so kind to my 87 year old Grandmother. You just don't see that kind of service anymore on domestic flights in the USA. That was really back in the,"good old days", of commercial aviation.

The first flight was a positioning flight so I could take the fifth freedom flight on Latam to Madrid in their B787-9 business class, my first time flying on my own and my first time flying business class. Obviously, it was an absolutely great experience! By the way, I you are interested in flying a flat bed business class for an economy class fare, that is the way to go as they frequently offer prices as low as €160.00 for a round trip.

First solo flight was Budapest-Frankfurt-Singapore-Jakarta in 2013 with Lufthansa & Jetstar Airways. Lufthansa had also been graded five stars recently, but not at that time. It was Economy Class (I never fly on higher class). That FRA-SIN stage was with a Superjumbo. The legendary A380. I had next to no sleep, because the passenger in front reclined his seat to my knees (thank you, pinhead) and the passenger behind was also a person with the same height as I am (I am 1.85 metres). Legroom was OK-ish, but it was an aisle seat, unfortunately.
My first experience on a wide-body on a window-seat was an Etihad A330 on an AUH-CGK route. Well, to say the least it is a different league.

While attempting to watch a movie on my iPod (remember those antiques?), he enhanced the audio by beating on the back of her reclined seat and shouting "B---h!" every few minutes. The FA's never tried calming him down!

Hi Paul. I've been flying with Hainan Airlines 2-3 times a year from Manchester to Beijing. When they started coming to Europe about 5 years ago they were really quite good in economy, just a notch bellow Cathay the the Middle Eastern airlines. but certainly better and cheaper than the European ones (with the exception of Finnair).
About 2 years ago for some reason they went into a decline. The excellent service stopped being excellent, and as you saw the planes got dirty and tatty. It's a shame as they were a very good and well priced option to get to China from the North of England. But unfortunately they are no longer good or cheap.

ET flies many doble cities before flying to ADD. OSL-ARN is one of them. First time I flew was 1978, summer break from school. I was 8 and my sister 6. We flew BU, now part of SK, to AES, on a F-28. Then on a 737 via, BOO, EVE to TOS. Stayed over night. Next day TOS-ALF with SK DC-9. On vacation for 4 weeks. The return was a DHT from HFT to TOS via ALF and SOJ. We stayed in TOS a few days together with mom and dad before we all fly via AES to FBU, now OSL.

My first flight wasn't as an adult, but 11. It was an adventure, no doubt. If anyone had a more messed up travel day, I'd love to hear it: as a family, we were flying from Calgary to Halifax. Our original routing was on an Air Canada DC-9. Calgary-Regina-Winnipeg-Thunder Bay-Sudbury-Ottawa-Montreal-Moncton-Halifax. We enjoyed our breakfast on the ground at the gate while AC mechanics tried to trouble shoot an instrument light issue. We were re-booked on CP Air. The plane came in from Vancouver and stopped in Winnipeg before going on to Toronto. We were then booked on an Air Canada 727-200. That flight was late, and we arrived in Halifax just after midnight.

Skytrax has lost a lot of its credibility over the years. Many airlines undeservingly get poor ratings while the opposite is also true. It looks like many airlines may be involved in "paid" ratings or reviews.
Many "1-Star" Skytrax rated airlines have actually good flight experiences while many 5 star airlines like these may even end up disappointing.

I have flown with Hainan Airlines for many many times, in fact, My first journey with them was over 15 years ago when the airline first started. It is very surprising for me to see any Hainan's aircraft to be in such a disgusting and unacceptable state. Clearly, the cabin was only cleaned very carelessly if not cleaned at all. I can most definitely say it has never been the case for those Hainan's flights that which depart from China, after all, we should blame the ground cleaning staff in Dublin rather than the cabin crew. I would say Hainan Airlines has always been and still is one the best airlines in asia, they have maintained a very high standard of service in their longer or shorter routes and unlike many western top-tier airlines, Hainan operates a very young fleet as they mainly use 787s and newly purchased A350s on international routes and brand new 738s on domestic routes. You should definitely try one of their other flights which travel directly from or to China, I guarantee it would entirely change your impression for the airline.

A 5 star rating on Skytrax only means you paid Skytrax a larger bribe. That cabin was disgusting! I don't know if I'd be able to put up with that for even 40 minutes.
My first solo flight was at 14: CHS-ATL-MAN on Delta. I had a footb...er...soccer match that I didn't want to miss, so Mum and Dad let me fly back to England to visit family for Christmas a day later. I was too old for the unaccompanied minor service so I didn't get the enhanced cabin service, but we did use miles to upgrade me to business class. The biz class seat was comfy but the inflight service was terrible. The FA's were geriatric and rude. I was treated better on the train ride from MAN to Liverpool Lime St.

First flight: June 1962 aboard Trans Texas Airways DC-3. Shortest flight: Same airplane. We took off from Dallas Love Field and ten minutes later we landed at Amon Carter Field in Ft. Worth. Parked next door at Carswell AFB were strategic B-58 bombers. The flight to Austin took a little longer. Only one stewardess for this small plane.
The trashed out plane is a disgrace. Notwithstanding the fact that folks world wide dump their trash on the highways and byways of the world, at least the airlines have a service that's supposed to clean the aircraft. After seeing the flying garbage dump, I wonder what their maintenance standards are like....

First flight I had on my own was in 2001, weeks after the terrorist attacks in New York, I was flying to Australia from Heathrow with Singapore Airlines via Changi, and then on to Sydney. I loved that trip, but not the flight home, 15 hours to London from Singapore due to strong headwinds. I was in economy with very little leg room, it was very difficult to get comfortable, so when I flew back out to Sydney in late January 2002 I went business class, Heathrow-Vienna-KL-syd, an Austrian Airlines A321 to Vienna and then a Lauda Air Boeing 777 to Sydney. An experience I will never forget. Brilliant.

Someone's clearly sharted up that seat. Blew out their rubber gasket.
I never trust fabric covered seats on public transportation.....surprised that an airline would still use them.
Yeh if they can't keep the cabin clean you can bet the fuel filters are all clogged too. I once flew economy on United from SFO to Singapore that was that filthy. Big scratched dirty jugs of tepid tapwater and the food was well crusted between the seats. Return flight was premium economy and it was the total opposite..... meticulous and great service. I really think they're just treating economy passengers like farm animals now.
First flight- British Caledonian back in the 80s from Glasgow to Dallas.....still my favorite airline since it's all been downhill since then.
Brilliant video Paul..... I'll remember to pack a diaper if I ever have to sit on one of those foam fabric seats. Wear it outside in over my pants throughout the flight.

First flights? SDF - FAR in 1964, with my parents, then annually therafter for several years. My first time alone (and back) was 1968 - I was 8, but experienced at flying. It required SDF-ORD on Eastern (a 727), ORD-MSP on United (a Caravelle, yes, really a Caravelle), then MSP-FAR on Northwest Orient on a Lockheed Electra. Of course, no security in those days, but even with the connections with other airlines, I required little assistance from airline personnel. Onboard entertainment, in those days, was whatever book or magazine you brought along, and each flight offered at least a sandwich and soda, despite being 1 hour flights. In the ensuing years, I've flown a lot of airlines that have folded, and, aside from SWA (the most common carrier out of SDF), I probably flew Eastern and Ozark more often than others.

The baggage claim at Edinburgh is ridiculous. It is such a small airport and they still cannot get it right. Previously I made excuses for it as I felt that you got to baggage claim so quickly that it just seemed like a long time to wait relative to other bigger airports, but no, it's just slow.
Edinburgh Airport are making strides to expand and become a global player, but frankly the security and baggage claim sections are too slow and the terminal itself is too small. They really need to add another runway (which won't happen) if they want to actually become relevant.
With Brexit looming, the British Government also need to reconsider the tax on premium cabins. It is 100% deterring people from paying for a Premium cabin when flying to and from the UK. I recently flew to Tokyo via Qatar. I booked in Economy and then just upgraded the sections from Doha to Haneda and back, whilst staying in economy for the flights to and from Edinburgh. It just doesnt make sense that the upgrade for a 12 hour flight was £300 cheaper than for a 6 hour flight!
    Sorry, I'm definitely rambling now...

My first flight was with Delta, on the 717 to Atlanta from Lexington, followed by an MD-90 to Orlando, a week there, before a B737-700 back up to Atlanta which left about an hour late. It then circled, getting us in 2 hours late, which caused me to miss my flight back up to Lexington which would have been an MD-88. Luckily, Delta took care of me, and I ended up on a CRJ-900 operating as Delta Connection, by Endeavor. My next one was more recent as was from Lexington to Philadelphia on an ERJ-145 operating as American Eagle by Piedmont, then a B737-800 up to Boston, a week around New England, and then back to Boston with AA on the A320, and then another missed connection and was able to rebook to a PSA CRJ-700 to Lexington operating as American Eagle!
