I really like KLM service and staff. They were fantastic when I broke my leg abroad (it's OK it is an artificial leg but I could not walk!) the staff and crew couldn't do enough to make travelling easy for me on my long haul flight from Central America. I will go out of my way to use KLM whenever I can.

Noice. Meanwhile the first time me and mother went to America by ourselves (me nearly 18 though I didn't look it because dwarfism and her elderly and disabled in a wheelchair, I know there's a massive age gap lol) Heathrow saw my mother in the wheelchair, took her to the START of the tunnel you take from the boarding area to the plane, and told her to walk the rest of the way. That's a 2/3 minute walk for me and I can stand if I need to in a queue. That's a marathon for her hanging onto me and shuffling her feet and going quite slowly and she CANNOT just stand even clinging onto me like a disabled eagle because it hurts her and they expected her to just get up from her wheelchair and walk, not even letting me push her to the door. They haven't dared do this since because she yelled at them so much. Not like tiny dwarfish me could have carried her AND our carry on bags. Eventually they moved the wheelchair to the door, and now we travel with her own personal wheelchair, which people have since attempted to make off with despite it not looking anything like an airport wheelchair. I have had to run to the rescue. This was a decade ago, btw.
The airport was close to being sold for housing, the local MP is part of saving it and changing the name back to Teesside from Durham-Tees Valley. I remember flying to Ibiza from hear many years ago!
Perhaps it should be named "Darlington-Teesside" due to it's proximity to The large town of the same name..."Durham-Tees Valley" I thought was a misleading name anyway as that suggested it was next to Durham (City) which it definitely isn't!...I'm pleased to see more flights coming there, as it was indeed at risk of closure due to being underused...I'd like to see the old London connection back, like in the old days with British Midland (later BMI)
@rando01 I bet you know the last leader of the Darlington Council. He was the one who wanted Teeside Airport knocked down and housing built on it. Well, the North East needs links. We can now fly to London, Spain, Belfast, and Dublin.
I really love the design of KLMs "stuff" on the meal service. Beautifully designed box for the KLM Cityhopper flight, the blue design on the tea mugs, the engraving on the knives and forks, and the unusual shape to the glassware.
Before I retired flew with KLM just about every month for 10 years. Always found the cabin crew really pleasant and always helpful when the inevitable delays happen. Once arrived back in Amsterdam from Shanghai very late and missed my last flight back to Manchester. Just before landing the purser told me that a hotel room was already booked for me.
When I flew to Panama City with klm we had to divert to Colombia and the crew never mentioned it so the cabin was in absolute chaos as the route map showed a different destination.. we then spent an hour in colombia till we flew to Panama and during the whole time they never informed us anything.. We the missed our connection to Quito and were late 24h.. During this trip i lost my luggage and KLM never found it :-(
Got a real big twinge of nostalgia from this one. Thank you. I was taken back to my days with the airline (1966-1998) and how things were handled during an IROP. Teeside reminded me of one of the first terminals I worked in - it was a repurposed Air Force field building. And it seemed the attitude of the people at KLM was the “old ways” and not the impersonal service we tend to get today. Again many thanks.
Yes it is a long lonely walk to the terminal building, years ago there used to be a small shuttle bus , but do not think that exists today, so a long walk especially if you have suitcases, but still fond memories of the place

The walkway in front op the lounge wil be gone when Schiphol finish the upgrade of the terminal. Then you will have great views of the appron. It makes me proud to see the KLM crew do the best they can. Dutch mentality. I love your video’s. I can not wait to see the video of the KLM 747
It's great seeing a video about my local airport :) Although, embarrassingly, I've never flown from here! Having been to holiday destinations like Tenerife etc, we've had to fly from Newcastle / Leeds Bradford. When we went to Thailand we flew from Heathrow, and to Malaysia we flew from Manchester. This year we're going to Phuket and are flying from Edinburgh with Qatar. We just don't have the airlines up here (yet!).
I'm from Hamilton, ON, Canada and we have one of the only two flying Lancaster bombers in the world (the UK has the other) and it's dedicated to Andrew Mynarski. If you're ever around southern Ontario, it's definitely worth a visit the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Thanks for the videos, man! These are great.
Another excellent Paul Lucas video. Not flown KLM in a long time if ever but their product looks pretty solid. What an airport Teesside is! Glad you eventually got to HEL. Can't wait to watch you getting out of HEL. Most people go to HEL and back: you go to HEL and beyond!

Really? Seen people do that so many times. Imagine my surprise when I saw someone LICKING the airplane door once when he was entering! Not even joking. Dude standing next to me saw it too. Both him and I were stunned... HUGE WTF!
Yeah I've always done it as well, not really sure why I started, but know I've been doing it since I was a child (may have been something my late Mum taught me, she loved flying).
Cheers Paul. Nice to see Middleton St George again. I remember from my school days in Guisborough watching Gloster Javelins roaring round the circuit. Happy days.
Superb video as always, love the fact Paul that you include these smaller airports around the country to start your journeys off. Always interesting to see what these airports do prior to departure in contrast to the bigger airports. Look forward to the rest of the videos coming up 👌👍
I find it cool that you show smaller airports, too, not only the big hubs. From what you show, it’s a little, yet tidy and comfortable airport. I have seen many others that are bigger, but much worse in that regard. And KLM? It may not be as fancy as some airlines from the Middle East, but it’s a reliable airline and their strength is doing a consistently solid job.
Great video! I did a Fokker 70 flight to Teeside on the final day of F70 operations with KLC.. Pretty neat airport, border patrol was quite surprised though when a Dutch guy told them he was only staying there for 5 hours😅
Great video and review! KLM offers top notch service, thank you for letting us share this great experience with you! All the best from the west coast of Florida USA!!!
Flew KLM from Teesside to Amsterdam>Berlin last month .. normally get a direct cheapo flight from Manchester but these days you can not rely on the trains to get to Manchester Airport. So more expensive 6am flight ... but really impressed all round with Teesside Airport... sail through security etc and KLM impressive as well. Will defiantly use both again
I loved the decoration of that KLM lounge in Schipol. I really hope to fly KLM once I can travel again as they seem like such an amazing airline (and The Netherlands is on my bucket list!)
A couple of minor corrections. Air UK was purchased by KLM somewhere around 1996/7 (the exact date of the agreement is unknown to me) and incorporated into KLM Cityhopper, KLM's low cost, very efficient and flexible daughter company. The routes previously flown by Air UK were incorporated into Cityhopper's network over a two-three year period as Air UK was wound down. The reason for the takeover was that British Transport Holdings, Air UK's owners were a marginally profitable company but flew nearly 35-38% of KLM's connecting traffic into Amsterdam. Having Air UK go belly up would not have been in KLM's interest. Currently Cityhopper has one less Embraer than KLM has 737's. Come the introduction of the Embraer E2 series in 2021 you may well find Cityhopper has more aircraft than KLM has 737's. The platform where you parked in the Embraer in Amsterdam has had various names. Amongst them were A Platform and later Bravo Platform (due to the stand designations and in this area), the Commuter Platform as used by the Airport in official documents but the internal name by the workers is "het mieren nest" meaning ant's nest because of the apparently chaotic but ordered work performed by the turnaround crews. The Fokker Farm was a term used by engineers. With regard to delays and unusual events you will find many KLM captains and crew members will speak directly to passengers at the gate. It's what they do because they want to. They know who pays their wages, what their passengers want to know and the questions most likely to be asked. The iPads issued to all crew members will have the latest information on the ground. Unfortunately speaking to passengers at the gate is not always possible. The idiots who end up running British airports often prevent this with rules that prevent crews from moving from the Apron to the Gate pathetically citing "security" as the reason (airports hate pilots). So if this is not possible crews will often make a public address in the cabin. You will also find that Amsterdam ATC Flow planners, the people who restrict traffic are totally unaware of modern aircraft performance and limitations and will needlessly overreact to any weather condition or event (my experience with nearly 8,000 flights over 20 years). Some consider that the largest department in the LVNL (Dutch CAA and ATC) is the Flight Prevention Department. If they were told Burger King had run out of mayonnaise (chip saus - a Dutch necessity) they would impose a 30% flow reduction - because!
I’m from Teesside originally, I used to live 10mins away from here, and my parents still do. I hope for the day they do reasonably priced flights to and from here to the city.
Brought back some memories here! Used to work for ICI (remember them?) and they had a plane on permanent charter for i think 5 flights a day between Manchester & Teesside return. Got to say Teesside airport looks a lot nicer today, I seem to recall it resembled a very large porto-cabin back in the early 90s ;-)
I luckily fly KLM for work, who book us all in Ecconomy class. The regular reasonably priced upgrades are great. Also access to the new Non-Schegen Crown Lounge makes the ticket a little bit more worth it - as that is usually £46 on it's own for access (offered on the app at check in). I normally sit in the bar on the top floor for a quieter experience and view, worth it as the cost of a coffee or a beer if you ask me.
finally my local Airport :D wont be for long Paul, they've got intl flights in the sumer to alicante, Burgas and Majorca. Also will be flying to Dublin, Belfast, Cardiff, Southampton, London city and Isle of man all being daily on a number of rotations increasing the daily flights from 7 to 15 . hopfully Teesside will beovertaking humberside airport as least used :D thanks for another great review paul
Great to hear a mention of AirUK again. I worked with them for quite a few years as cabin crew and did the MME-AMS run on occasion on the old F27/F50. A great little airline in it's day - a shame it came to an end... But that's the aviation industry :-/
I used to work there years ago in the cargo building down near the railway station, the airport has never been used to its full potential , if I remember correctly it has one of the longest regional airport runways in the UK, definitely not used as it should be
I'm sure it does. its about the normal average length for an international airport. I think one of the presidents once landed here in Air Force one. Your right about the potential. It has a larger catchment area than LBA and Newcastle. However to get this airport up to the standards that modern international (somewhat) busy Airports (like LBA and NCL) a lot of work has to be done. Improved Terminal, Scrapping the terminal Fee, More air side ancillary services and products, Better Taxiway links (especially for RWY23), Better connections to the airport etc. Ben Houchen has done a Terrific Job, but there is still miles more that needs to be done to get this airport up to scratch. We are certainly not out the woods just yet. All us Teessider Aviation geeks can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope for the airport to catch on with the low cost carriers that will start bringing in the flights and footfall to the airport.
I am amazed you did not run into Guy Gibson and the Damn Buster squadron as well...great history though Paul...love it !! Glad you had the Fokker farm under control (sorry mate bad joke ) Great plane spotting mate !! Brilliant ! Safety versus landing...great flight again and I look forward to the next leg where we can welcome you to Australia !!!
My husband used to fly into and out of Teesside all the time. He had to go there on business often so he flew on KLM from Houston to Amsterdam and then caught a smaller plane into Teesside.
I was starting to wonder when we’d catch up with your trip down here to Australia! Looking forward to the trek! Thanks for this video! Love the historical information! It’s sad to see former RAF areas abandoned, we have quite a few in Australia. Pity you didn’t get a chance to go to Cunderdin whilst you were here. Not only does it have one of the oldest Gliding Club in Western Australia / Australia, it also has all of the WWII buildings built there to do maintenance on bombers. Love seeing the entry by foot. Sadly I cannot do this as I am in a wheelchair. Pass a cup a through the screen sometime. Would love to sip one whilst watching your videos (haha) Like the Breakfast Box. Looks great! I haven’t the foggiest whilst you were delayed by the way (hahaha) 😂😂 Thanks Paul! Really looking forward to your next video 😊
In the city of Hamilton (30 miles west of Toronto) at the John C. Munro Intl. airport you will find The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM). They have a flying Lancaster in their collection referred to as the "Mynarski Memorial Lancaster". It is painted in the colours of his aircraft KB726 , VR-A . Vera as we enthusiast's call her . For $3600 . plus a modest membership fee you can actually take a 60 minute flight on her . I watch it fly over Toronto almost every weekend during its flying season . Cheers .
Thank you for highlighting Teesside airport, wife and I are planning to visit my cousin in Northallerton to visit my cousin and nearest airport with connection to my city ( Las Vegas ) is Teesside through KLM with transit in Schepol. There is isn't much coverage on this airport on RUclips until now I wonder being such a small airport, do they have full fledge border control facility for a US green card holder like me ?
Loving the itinerary ahead! And love KLM, I once was a Silverwing for 2 years! I love Indonesia, travel to Ubud almost annually, last 2 times were on Garuda (773 business), China Southern (A359 and a332 economy)
KLM are probably one of the best airlines in Europe, they provide a very comprehensive service flying to many of the smaller regional airports. I have always loved their customer service and the great value for money that they offer. Staff are generally very friendly and accommodating, I would rather fly KLM than Ryanair or Easyjet. And I feel ever so slightly more at home with KLM than with BA.
Love your videos! The funny thing is I caught another video of another You Tuber taking KLM from Amsterdam to Chicago he also was going business class! I was like okay wow! Until I heard you say the view was blocked and I can see that! But on the other person’s video he showed a 2nd floor outside (non-smoking) lounge you could watch planes from. Incidentally when he pans to the planes you can see the passageway you showed in your video.
Just a suggestion since you have done ferry boat trips in the past - maybe you could go on one of those Viking longboat cruises or on a trip up the Mississippi River in the US on a paddleboat like the Delta Queen.
Remember AirUK? My first ever flight as a very small person was on an AirUK Fokker Friendship, then the next year one of the early BAE-146s, although as a small child I didn’t believe WhisperJet was an appropriate name for the nose of a Jet!
I am amazed by people saying its good how klm is giving so much updates. Its pretty normal for Dutch airlines to do that. Its pretty normal that you have a delay at Amsterdam cause of slots and full capacity of schiphol. I flew TUI this January and they had troubles with the motor. They try to update us as much as possible and they sended us sms messages for information. Always very nice except the delay then
I’ve actually been on a train that stops at Teeside Airport. I didn’t even know there was a station apart from Dinsdale and Allens West! I didn’t get out, at that time the station had 2 trains a week.
Freezing rain and snow are two different things, at least here in the US. I used to drive for a living, and freezing rain was always the most dread words to hear in a weather forecast. A few inches of snow were no problem to drive in; no matter how good a driver you were, freezing rain was a nightmare.
Freezing rain is nasty. I was stationed in Germany on a top of a mountain at an army radio station, and freezing rain would gather on the massive Bundespost telephone and TV antenna next to us. Walking from my room to the operations building required me to be contuously alert to falling ice that could brain you!
The last time I flew KLM ORD to NWI, I upgraded to business class after check in for a major discount and it was the biggest hassle to get the upgrade I paid for. They took the money out of my account right away but my online check in didn't reflect my upgrade and I spent over 7 hours online waiting for a response then another 4 hours on the phone with their customer service. Their plane service and staff are amazing, but over the phone and online they're absolutely one of the worst I had to deal with. Their app has a lot of problems, so make sure you keep proof and screenshots of any purchases or last minute upgrades just in case!
Used to be a busy airport once upon a time. I've been to Spain from here and they used to hold a cracking air show every year-even concorde has visited here!!
Back in the day of Cyprus Turkish Airlines (KTHY), because of the restrictions making all planes departing from Ercan Airport in Northern Cyprus to land in a Turkish mainland Airport, KTHY would often divert to an unscheduled Turkish Airport before continuing to London. For example, we may have been scheduled to land in Antalya, but we would stop in Bodrum for example instead. Very weird... but I do sort of miss KTHY... they were just such a unique airline
Great video Paul! Ive always wondered what it’s like to fly from teeside! Hopefully I’ll get to do it myself one day! Really enjoyed that video! I imagine plane spotting there would be like watching paint dry! Keep it up!
Excellent allround, thanks for the 'warts an all' Northern airport. Dont know if you could help but only airport in UK not served by KLM is IOM! We only have LGW and MAN, I have written to KLM to get us to direct to AMS where we could connect with the World but to no avail ?

My first ever solo long-distance flight started in the same way - Teesside to Amsterdam with KLM almost 20 years ago. Amazed to see it is still going!
Your meals looked really good. It's a good thing you made yourself a big layover. I really enjoyed this video.
Good to see my local airport Paul, hopefully we have more flights soon!
I loved the decoration of that KLM lounge in Schipol. I really hope to fly KLM once I can travel again as they seem like such an amazing airline (and The Netherlands is on my bucket list!)
Great video as always, Paul. Hope we get to see all the other flights you take on your trip to Australia and beyond.
Jean Grice Thanks Jean! Yes, every flight will be released as a video over the coming few months!
@@Paul_Lucas Looking forward to it 😊
A couple of minor corrections.
Would be great paul if you could mention how full your flights were , I'm always interested in that thanks
I’m from Teesside originally, I used to live 10mins away from here, and my parents still do.
I hope for the day they do reasonably priced flights to and from here to the city.
I also have fond memories of flying from here to the typical holiday resorts as a child
Loved the historical bit, Paul! Great video!
Ha! A very long time ago I actually did some urbex in Billingham House before it was demolished.
@@Paul_Lucas Oh my God do you remember its Paternoster lift?
Interesting small airport. I am glad this airport has more choices. It looks like a nice airport.
What a pleasant channel to watch, Paul! Great work!!
Love the nod to Geoff. That station really is in the middle of nowhere. Glad you got safely on your way.
I love your flight reports. Especially about "my" airline KLM. I am looking forward to follow your progress on this worldtrip
I normally sit in the bar on the top floor for a quieter experience and view, worth it as the cost of a coffee or a beer if you ask me.
thats about the nicest shorthaul meal ive seen on a biz ticket to finland from klm ever.. nice one!
finally my local Airport :D wont be for long Paul, they've got intl flights in the sumer to alicante, Burgas and Majorca.
I can relate to the 'touch' as you board. I always give her a light wrap with my knuckles. Didn't even realise I was doing it for awhile.
I'm starting to pay attention and appreciate your editing, Paul. You're improving your already great videos little by little. Very enjoyable!
Being northern rail that one train a week probably doesn’t show most weeks😂
My husband used to fly into and out of Teesside all the time. He had to go there on business often so he flew on KLM from Houston to Amsterdam and then caught a smaller plane into Teesside.
Thanks for the piece of trivia. I was really perplexed as to why KLM served so many regional airports in the U.K. Now I know.
🎶all the airports, all of them🎶
Absolutely loved the salt and pepper shakers on your second flight (clogs!)
- another great video!
I'm two or three years older than you Paul and yeah, remember Air UK! Used to love the old BAE 146.
Would love to sip one whilst watching your videos (haha)
Like the Breakfast Box. Looks great!
I haven’t the foggiest whilst you were delayed by the way (hahaha) 😂😂
Thanks Paul!
Cheers .
I like how you covered 2 (technically 3) flights in one video, rather than 2 short vids 👍🏻
I used to fly from teeside down to London in the 90s on British midland.
Nice one Paul. Looking forward to your reports on your flights from the rest of your journey!
Loving the itinerary ahead! And love KLM, I once was a Silverwing for 2 years!
I love Indonesia, travel to Ubud almost annually, last 2 times were on Garuda (773 business), China Southern (A359 and a332 economy)
Paul, you do a really good job in your videos!
Safe travels, Paul!
One of Britain’s least used stations at the least used international airport, nice way to complement the airport. Geoff Marshall has joined the chat
Just a suggestion since you have done ferry boat trips in the past - maybe you could go on one of those Viking longboat cruises or on a trip up the Mississippi River in the US on a paddleboat like the Delta Queen.
TY Paul for the Excellent Videos
Thank goodness that pilot had the good sense to divert, rather than land in bad weather. More pilots should follow his example.
Great video Paul. I wish you a nice and safe trip to Oz... Greetings from the Netherlands🇱🇺
Ahhhh the classic freezing rain excuse. AKA as snow.
Looks like a hell journey from start to finish. Well done on keeping your cool!
Been looking forward to this for ages!
I never knew about Teeside airport. Thanks for the new information!
Great Vid Paul.. Really enjoyed this one. 184k subs well done mate.
What a long day for you. I enjoy it when you go through the little used airports and give us their history. Thank you.
