It's honestly not such a terrible idea to re-create the Beta in such an abridged form. It still gets the point of the story across while not requiring as much work from the creators. I think if someone did an honest, non-meme-y take on this idea and made just a few maps with instant transitions between them, it could be a sort of Powerpoint-esque retelling of the HL2 Beta.
I mean, you're probably never going to get a coherent version of the Beta because it's all over the place and went through several reiterations for a reason, so this would skipt all those balancing and pacing issues that would come along with that. Just a neat, interactive "what if?", basically.

Exactly. Why bother with months of work to make a quality map if you can just make a not very good map. At the end of the day it might not be as good as other Half-Life 2 Beta recreations but your would be completed in opposite to others.

Some of this mod is so well-constructed, I have to believe some of the models were originally made for a serious mod before the team gave up and said "want to make a funny joke?" and made this instead.

Xash3D is a reimplementation of GoldSrc, not Source. So it's basically a remake of Half Life 1 engine. Very short thesis. Also GORDON THAT DROPSHIT IS COMMING RIGHT FOR US AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (explosion)
It would be cool if someone remade this mod in source with higher quality mapping and added half assed transitions so theres no cuts in gordons journey
