Just to contextualize how harsh that confinement was, Napoleon - who is a controversial figure but definitely a guy who the English monarchy disliked - imprisoned on Saint Helena was allowed to go 4 miles from his residence unattended, and could go farther if he asked for a British officer to come with him. He also had a few friends to hang out with, and far more servants than a pair of ladies in waiting and a couple of chambermaids. People like Lafayette, no friend of Napoleon, wrote letters of protest calling even this too harsh for a man who had already escaped from one island and did the whole 100 Days Thing. Comparatively, they put this woman in a max security prison. George I hated his wife more than George IV hated Napoleon Bonaparte. And that’s…that’s wild, to me, like one of these people is not like the other. Anyhow, great video! Subscribed and will totally watch more! :D
This was very interesting. Her life was tragic. It was very unfair and cruel what happened to her, she had no rights 🥺. Thank you for covering her story
A truly sad tale,Dorathia didn't deserve years of imprisonment and to not see her children, they treated her cruely without compassion, thank you Jon superb as always.
What an horrible, evil man that George 1 was - she did not deserve this shocking treatment and I am saddened she never saw her children and that her parents never supported her.
@@jamesmcgreenmine6329 Hey, been to Oslo as a kid, been to London for exactly for one hour at Heathrow, (want to really see the city of London if I get the chance), born in Chicago and live on the East Coast now. (New England). Take care.
What a depressing tale of horrible monsters. The only sympathetic character is her lover and perhaps Sophia herself. I wonder how the story would have turned out had they managed to escape as planned.
The 'Affair' of Sophia Dorothea was, in the '40sthe subject of a full-blooded historical drama "Sarabande for Dead Lovers" starring Stewart Granger as the murdered 'lover' Konigsmark and Peter Bull as George and Flora Robson as Countess Von Platten. It's well worth a watch!
What a tragic life she had... sometimes being a royal is really not all it is cracked up to be and in her case this is a prime example!! She was just a glorified prisoner for much of her life...sad..
Don't trust that people say they have your best interests at heart, don't trust your cousin's or your staff, don't marry someone who makes you uncomfortable! Ever!! 😪😨😠😭
George the 1st was a horrible bully, and his mistreatment of his family was experienced by his own son and the separation he forced between his son and his own kids. Poor Sophia Dorthea, her curse was being born a female into the aristocracy. It would have been best to be born poor and not have to be sold to the highest bidder, and know that your only worth is birthing a son.

My pleasure Anita, thanks 😊
It still amazes me how women were treated so poorly for adultery when men openly flaunted it! What unfair times they were! Fantastic video as always 😀
Much appreciated Jake, thanks 😊
Oh so seeing a woman suffering is amazing to you? gross

Jean Plaidy wrote a novel about Sophia Dorothea, "The Pricesss of Celle", which was really good.
Thanks Angelia 😊
Thank you! Savage tale is right. Wsh I could give Sophia a hug.
Thanks Lisette 😊

Life can be cruel to some, thanks Ray 😊
Her husband was a cold heart monster who needed to see a therapist
What is sad and tragic story. Women had no rights back then. This poor woman was married to a monster. She didn’t get to see her children.
And some call them the good old days! Thanks Leticia 😊

Awful treatment of this lady. Cruel, terrible husband. Thanks Jon.
Terrible times for such a young lady. Thanks Jane 😊
It really was a bitter shame.
Thank you Sir 😊
I had _no_ idea. Was this woman the mother of George II of the UK? ? ?
She was indeed, thanks Bev 😊
@@HistoryRoadshow Wow! To treat the mother of a future king that way.

Sad story, what a lovely lady.
Thanks SuS 😊
How did either have mistresses they are not the most pleasing looking people. What hope is their for the rest of us.
I only blame her parents
They were the reason for her misery
If they supported her when she wanted to end the marriage, she could have been happy 😢
Feel like he was looking for a reason to get rid of her so he could be free
