  • Did your BMW E46 Coolant tank blow and make a big Mess ?
    BMW E46 Coolant expansion tank amzn.to/3jKb9or
    Replacing the coolant tank is pretty important because as the car ages the plastic becomes brittle and weak and it more likely to burst at the most inconvenient moment. there was also one hose I replaced while I had the tank off just because it would be a beyotich to change afterwards without repeating the whole process.
    the steps are remove the upper hose, there is a lower hose, drain radiator, there is a clip on the bottom you need to push down and slide out. once that is all done you need to pull the tank straight up and out. and that's pretty much it

    Hello! Thanks for the video! I had to go miles out to find a certified BMW brand tank that actually fit. I bought Behr brand. I did crack the thermostat. I bought a new one. No brand pref necessary on that. I definitely cursed it! lol I'm short so I had to stand on a block to get more leverage. Your right about spending the money on the best parts and you save yourself a ton of cash by doing it yourself. Other than that it was easy-but I can probably do more than an average female or most dudes for that matter. Take care and thanks again!

    thanks for the video. Can't get anyone here to help me. Got it out just fine. I did not know how to get the new thermostat in so the video was a big help. Mine fell apart when I remove the expansion tank. I also broke the tiny bleed screw for the antifreeze. Got to go to BMW . I have to replace top hose assembly and the bleed screw. Hoping to get it back together tomorrow.

    Wish I would have seen this video before I took out my expansion tank. The other video's I saw didn't even mention the ATF thermostat. Took an extra three days after I had my tank out while waiting on the part.
    Didn't know what the part was or that it was even busted at first.
    Cheers

I replaced my oil cooler thermostat 1 year ago for something else. Its probably still new. Do they always break when removing the expansion tank? Thanks alot big guy.

    Hey man, thanks for the great video. I learned more from this than any other of the 15 or so I just watched. And it was pretty entertaining too. I'm about to attempt this on my e36 325. Is it pretty similar? Do I have to remove anything specific to get to the expansion tank? And did you just pour straight coolant or did you dilute it? Thanks again man and great video

    • @BackCountryWrenching
      @BackCountryWrenching  10 лет назад

      i had the fan and shroud remove for this video and that will depend if you have a automatic or std transmission. the auto is a bit harder to remove than the std. If you have the auto trans you'll have the thermostat which will need changing as well.

    Okay question bro at a minute and two seconds. 1:02 when you remove that hose I broke off the metal piece because of how brittle it was because of calcium build up. Not anything on the hose but where the hose attached to the radiator. If that broke off am I fucked and have to replace the whole radiator? Or can I just replace that part of that pipe.

    Thanks Jerry, I've got 85K miles, how many on your beast? So in order to do this job the parts order is 1) tank, 2) engine thermostat, & 3) trans thermostat? What hose needs changed? You ordered them from Pelican Parts? Thanks again, Dave.
    I just brought home an 83 MB 300SD w a Greasecar kit on it, ever do anything w those cars?

    • @BackCountryWrenching
      @BackCountryWrenching  10 лет назад

      well since your draining the coolant yes all those are good to change, maybe even a new water pump with a impeller as well. I changed the hose that went to the engine block the one that will be kind of hard to change without taking the tank off again. and yes everything was ordered from pelican parts. i've never seen that car I don't think. make a video of it

    Does the expansion tank snap back in? I did this replacement but had a difficult time knowing if the ET snaps back in place or not. There was no leak once I put coolant in so I'm guessing I put it back on right. I drove to AZ from CA w/no issues also. But just wanted to ask anyways.

    • @BackCountryWrenching
      @BackCountryWrenching  10 лет назад +1

      you can kind of feel it snap back into place, if it wasn't in place the big clip on the bottom wouldn't go in

    The swearing makes it.. ha,ha,ha! To save my fucking life I couldn't get the new tank to drop in. Then I tried to get the old tank to drop in and that wouldn't work either. I have no freaking idea what I did wrong. It was all going so well. Lol. *Bought a new tank of Amazon that has all great reviews and will try that. If that doesn't work I'll order the OEM. The only reason I didn't was having to wait a week to get it. Anyway.. thanks for the video!

    Hey brother, thx for the link to this video, I will be tackling my Euro bitch soon enough here, but is there any difference besides pricing with ordering parts from Pelican vs BMW dealership?! I heard a guy on e46fanantics forums say he received a bad part from pelican, but most likely the fucker prolly installed it wrong or broke it in the process Cuase the previous dick face that owned my car said he bought his parts from pelican and NOW im having to fix his "work" fuckers, let me know bud =)

      Forgot to mention too, Coolant leak Problems started when coolant indicator came on so i saw that the original coolant that was used was green so i filled (my first time) it with Pentofrost* NF (blue color coolant) aka OE bmw coolant (bought from Orielys auto store) would that be one of the reason for my weird coolant leaking and radiator cracking?? Im already in the process of ordering all my new cooling system parts - im probably the idiot for doing that but hey fuck it, we all learn the hard way eventually
