I listened to this entire album/tape every night when I was in Desert Storm. This music kept me sane(insane) until I made it back to the world. So many emotions and and feelings were going through my head. Bravo ladies. Never give up. USN Combat Vet 86-92.

This song is indeed about nuclear war, or more specifically, the after effects of nuclear winter on Mother Earth. The song was written during the height of the Cold War, so escalations to nuclear war was something that various folks had some worries about off and on back then. Some folks think this song is about the effects of climate change, and it can work for that too.
When they talk about putting their mother to death... they're talking about mother earth
This song makes you wanna punch a pillow. The voice, the music, and the drums are so hard af.
A long time ago, I covered Blackened with my band. This tune is also a pleasant song to play.
My first Metallica album was" And Justice For All! I also saw them on this tour, Damaged Justice in April 1989! Great review ladies! Keep up the good work! 😊🇨🇦🤘♥️

I had a cassette with ...And Justice for All. It was one of the first full music records I ever heard. I did not understand anything about this back then. I did not understand English, I would not have understood the lyrics anyway. I had no idea why it is so heavy. Later on I went through various other genres and styles. But now some decades later, I am pretty sure that this album influenced my musical tastes significantly. The whailing intro of Blackened is permanently burned into my brain.
Saw Metallica on the Damaged Justice tour back in January of 1989 in Beaumont Texas and this was the song they opened with. Met Kirk Hammett after the show and he signed my cap.

Also anybody who like this should search "And justice for Jason". It beefs up the bass on the entire album actually making Jason's bas splaying audible, and this song is MEAN with the the thicker bottom end.

The intro to the song is backwards ( intentionally). There are videos on YT showing how they recorded it vs how it is on the record.

@@theivory1 this was great, my musical awakening, but pales in comparison to when I 1st heard Tool 2 years later. I bought a Tool belt and carried my walkman and tapes in it. Always had a Tool ready. The album I always cut grass to was Slayer's Divine Intervention. It's great for energy and fighting heat

I find this song main riff to be hardest to play of all metallica songs. Even though it's not as fast as master of puppets, but those 16th notes at the end give me troubles to play cleanly.

I have been a Metallica fan for years (since the band first started). Talk about being blown away by that sound of theirs. As a teen back then, this was new to all of us and we loved it and wanted more. Great singing ladies and awesome reaction, as always. Im 52 and from the East Bay Area/ SF. My first Metallica show was in Nov. 1983, I was 14! I've seen Metallica with Cliff Burton 6 times, 3 times with Jason and 0 with.... Rob..Exodus, Testament, Machinehead, Death Angel..Metallica, this was our scene. You Really REALLY, REALLY need to check out a Book and/or the Movie "Murder in the Front Row" as does everyone who reads this comment!! That was/is our scene. You two are awesome and give me hope!

Yes, age has caught up to them and they did release a couple non-metal albums(Load/reload). But this is still the best metal band to grace this Earth and its not even close. And i have the same master of puppets shirt! I also have a ride the lightning shirt that even though its very worn, i refuse to part with it. Also not sure on your theory on the laptop returning xD

Julia you should really truly aspire to learning the rhythm guitar for this song, especially the second part after the drop when it calms down...purely because when you play it the hands and their positioning, the fingers, everything...just flows out naturally like its inbuilt, its honestly the most freaky thing...its almost like your fingers know where to go instantly without music notes, like its programmed in your DNA or something! You gotta try it, I swear...

Please consider Ad Infinitum - I Am The Storm in a reaction poll, they're so underrated and the singer Melissa Bonney is amazing. They're symphonic power metal from Switzerland with a Nightwish meets Jinjer sort of sound. (To hear Melissa really growl her old band Rage Of Light has an excellent cover of Amon Amarth's 'Twilight Of The Thunder God') I've been requesting this song on reaction channels for over a year and only one, The Wolf HunterZ, has done it.

Just before and Justice For All was released they did the Monsters of Rock Tour with Kingdom Come Dokken, Scorpions and Van Halen. The previewed the album with this song . I said to my friends if the whole album is like this we are in for a great record and I'd say that was accurate . This was the angriest album of the 80s they did . I think you hear the pain of losing Cliff the way they did in the music. It was also the end of this era of Metallica as this was the last album where every song featured the complex structure they had become known for. As the Black album saw them write more straight forward songs and scale back the aggression from earlier records and set the standard for what they'd do in the rest of the 90s and early 2000s.
