    I did an arena thing online using a Redemption Paladin. Some fights were four-person free for all; some were a party if four against a monster or three. There would be different bets throughout. Maybe first to draw blood, first to kill, wunner, etc. It was hilarious how I would mess up bets by using Aura of the Guardian to prevent one low HP player from killing another knowing the turn order had that player next. Or I'd use Rebuke the Violent to take them both out. The GM thought it was hilarious how chaotic I could be for betting by turning the tide. And despite being a support subclass, I still did devastating damage.

One gives me the tools to talk before fight and just be a charisma 10 fallout New Vegas character and be a amazing tank, and the other lets me use my shield master feat to lock enemies down before they feel the cold and shivering power of my iron fisted smites.

    Oath of Redemption Paladin here! Unfortunately, my rolls are usually insufficient to convince people not to fight (doesn't help that our party is a party of demon hunters and demons in our setting really don't like being told what to do by holy servants of their enemies)... but due to my fighting style choice, I can use my reaction either to force disadvantage on our enemies when attacking others next to me, or channel divinity to force the enemies to eat their own crits. In the span of a very eventful fight, I nullified three critical hits by forcing disadvantage, and made an enemy barbarian take his own crit worth of radiant damage... all the while, I missed every attack I made, even with multi attack and advantage to hit. Never rolled above a 4... but I'm protecting my friends, so I'm alright with that! (Note: I can think of maybe two times in our several-month-long campaign where I actually used a smite... I have to wonder if I'm doing this right.)

      @peterrasmussen4428 2 года назад

      I agree with watchers.
      Ancients is actually not that good. Taking half damage from spells comes up a lot less often than you would think. Just as often, the enemies will have no spell casters, but instead something with a breath weapon or similar, that isn't a spell. Or if they do have a spellcaster, they will cast something that doesn't deal damage, like web, or blindness/deafness etc.
      If you look at something like the Lich, you will see, it has a touch attack, that is not a spell, less than 1/4 of its' spells are actually damage spells, and most of those damage spells are low level.
      Ancients do however have a very powerful spell in plant growth, so not the worst either.

    Another notable thing about oath of vengeance, you get access to HASTE as one of your oath spells! And with the spell "Find Steed" you can not only cast that haste on yourself, but ALSO your steed simultaneously! (as any single target spell you cast on yourself can also be applied to your steed) giving you, at base, a 120ft move speed with a warhorse, +2 to AC and at the level, 3 weapon attacks per turn (potentially all) at advantage! As well as up to 2 attacks from your steed (depending on how your DM rules it, tho with the haste in effect for it it should get a minimum of 1 additional haste-action, as described in the haste spell~ (which also means you could be moving up to 240-360ft per round if your steed used all it's actions to move~))

    @TheOriginalKZero Год назад

    Typical BS. Focusing purely on what it can do and not on what it must do. The tenants aren't just for flavor. You have to make decisions you might not want to as a player with all of those. If you're not doing it you can't stay those oaths.
    Also Vengance at least has to try to pay for and work on fixing what the bad guy managed to accomplish. So good luck. I'll just be over here with my magic resisting happy boy.

    • @garyco766
      @garyco766 11 месяцев назад

      Meh, there is a lot of room for interpretation, and therefor flexibility. The main thing about Vengeance is seeking to destroy the BBEG, which you're going to probably do anyway. And "I must help those harmed by their misdeeds." can come in a lot of forms. It doesn't mean you personally have to rebuild everything they destroyed. Ancients is top tier though, I'll give you that.

    • @TheOriginalKZero
      @TheOriginalKZero 11 месяцев назад

      @garyco766 There is flexibility, but people tend to exploit it too much. I agree you might not be rebuilding every destroyed house, but most would flat out ignore the tenet. Which is called restitution. So its not like saying "I'll stab that guy so hard" covers it.

    • @garyco766
      @garyco766 11 месяцев назад

      @TheOriginalKZero But by the nature of the oath, a lot of that is post game narration. Your primary duty is to stop the bad guy, as is made obvious by the fact that you hold yourself responsible for the harm that guy does. Once the BBEG is dead, the campaign is often over. At that point, you can narrate that your character spends the next x years rebulding the community, providing for the sick and the poor, etc. You go fullfill all of your non-combat duties that you now have time for since evil is defeated. Which isn't to say you can't roleplay some of that in the course of the campaign, but your focus during the campaign is pursuing the bad guy.

    • @TheOriginalKZero
      @TheOriginalKZero 11 месяцев назад

      @garyco766 Most good campaigns aren't so cut and dry as to hand you one clear bad guy target the whole time. Also if a DM is giving you downtime plays into it all.
      It is all very campaign dependent, and we're only focusing on one tenet of one oath, but it doesn't change that folks need to be held to the oaths in general, as it is an intended part of the balance of the class.

      Except that Vengeance is from the PHB, and is still the best subclass for Paladin. Ancients, another top tier choice is also PHB. Oathbreaker is one of the other strongest, and it's from the DMG. Conquest, another top one is from Xanathar's, which is the first splat book with subclasses. Those are arguably the 4 best paladin subclasses, and 3 are from the original books, and 1 is from the first splat book. Doesn't exactly support your argument. I could make similar arguments for other classes, like Rogue (arcane trickster), Ranger (gloom), Fighter (samurai, battlemaster), Monk (open hand) , Warlock (hexblade), Sorcerer (divine soul, draconic), and Druid (moon). Sure, there are some pretty good subclasses released in later books, but some of the best are from the first books.
