    So in a rather long (7+ years) D&D campaign I was in I played a Druid and a bit early in the campaign we encountered a young green dragon who was supposed to be a minor boss-like monster that setup the eventual big bad. But thanks to some lucky rolls my Druid convinced the green dragon to stop terrorizing the local villages and instead go setup her lair in my forest, as part of a mutual defense pact where my Druid (who just so happened to have been sent out into the world by his forest's group of dryads to find seeds for more plants to expand the variety of our forest) and the dryads he worked with would protect the green dragon and her future eggs/young in exchange for her protecting the forest along with us, AND using our magic to make the green dragon appear like a human whenever she wanted, allowing her to have as much fun as she wants playing politics in the local towns (which my druid and the dryads he worked with simply did not care about). Over the years the green dragon and my eventual archdruid fell in love and had several green dragon wyrmling foster children and half-dragon babies together. The best part was riding a green dragon into battle and dropping treants on her political rivals. Ah good times.

    What if a green dragon made a deal with a town?
    If the townsfolk worshipped the dragon like a deity (sending sacrifices in the shape of cattle and even festivities where the dragon is the guest of honor), the dragon would gift them with a plentiful harvest, scaring away pests and predators that may harm their livestock.
    Sounds like something a dragon would do, it ensures it's survival and now has some followers.

      @@ZonarohGaming tough question. I grew up reading monster manuals but I guess it’s up to the author / DM to decide. At least with Red Dragons, there was a Dragonlance novel (The Red Dragon Codex) where a Red Dragon used a Draconian born from a corrupted Silver Dragon egg as an assassin/spy, but only ever viewed him as disposable even though she was the closest thing to a mother he had. Long story short (obvious spoilers) after killing an adventurer to take his shape and identity the draconian ends up actually befriending the protagonists and helping them kill the red dragon, then the draconian’s real mother (as in the silver dragon that laid the egg) finds him and un-corrupts him, turning him into an actual young silver dragon.

    I've made a slave of a green dragon lure my adventures to an 'abandon' church sunk into the ground; with the promise of treasure (something he couldn't do alone). The damn wizard picked up on it being a lair somehow and was the cook through out the campaign. Once they set on the quest, he wrote on a piece of paper (irl) Beginning of every session. Didn't tip it off to any others (so not to alert my suspicion, either) never said what he wrote.
    They wandered through the place, and when they were in the deepest part of the dungeon and had loot set in their eyes, The chamber closed behind them and a gas descended!
    I asked for saves, but the wizard held up a hand, stopping everyone as they were reaching for their dice. We both smiled at each other, as I asked why.
    "There is no need to save from the poison, When we are all immune. I've fed you all a multitude of poisons and antidotes during each of our meals. Thats what these notes are for." And he showed us all the notes. We were all stupefied. They all would have died from that poison gas, if not for the wizard. Most still died from the fight, but it would have been so much worse if I could have used the damn breath weapon. Fuc-|(-in wizards. Makes me smile every time when I think about it too.

      See interesting question; would that parentage transfer to green half/dragons? Like imagine you have a pair of green dragon mates, and they both have this sudden realization that if they had a smaller, humanoid kid, that was strictly loyal to them, they could then cause more chaos and bring in more loot? I imagine you have a green half-dragon warlock-assassin-thing that gets their powers from their parents and the hoard of said parents, and they constantly come up with one nefarious scheme or another that takes advantage of them being humanoid in form and stuff. Maybe the other half would be orc since evidently they seem ok with orcs.

    Ah, my favorite dragon!
    I like to follow this mentality with my Green Dragons: By the time you see the dragon, half a dozen plots to end your life will already be in motion. If you end up fighting the dragon directly... you at least can die knowing those plots failed. For a Green Dragon will never bloody their claws directly, it leads to rumors that said dragon lacks the cunning and wit to trick you into destroying yourselves.

      Even in AD&D , green dragons had the closest family ties.
      The mated pair's children stay with their parents till young adult, or till the local area can not support their large size and numbers. Then again a single green dragon clan area of control can cover over a 20 mi by 30 mi ( 600sq mi.) zone.
      If you see one or three juveniles out side of their parents lair, then their parent or older siblings are close by. At that point your party has become part of a live hunting exercise.
      Until a green dragon reaches young adult stage in their lives, they are pack hunters. " I like my alone ME time, but I need to show off to the rest of my family." So all family members stay within ear shout range.
      I given "XP' to players that have their characters running for their lives.
      One-tenth to one-20th is fare.
      As for the back ground part where dragons will lay egg clutches in radon areas just to make sure their blood line moves forwards. Only young adult that are reckless and the female does not want a live in mate yet in her life.
      " Listen , we met in a tavern , had some fun, AND THAT WAS IT ! "
      " Wild " green dragons infants "wrymlings," are pack hunters and den diggers.
      " I think I smelled a rabbit, I did ,I did ! "
      ( Rabbit comes out in a clump of earth and the cub does not notice and keeps digging for the next hour. Ever watch a couple of dogs dig in the same spot before ?)
      Young adult green dragons out on their own, really like/ cough, cough,"love"
      8th-level wizards that can cast "polymorph " spells.
      "Would you like to be friends, with.. benefits..?" ( sly smile, wink, wink.)
      "Well,.. hello.. there."
      Adventure game finds a couple/ or a lone green dragon cub.
      The players: do we kill it for the XP? Do you catch it and sell it for gold, but what if the local baron/ sheriff just take the dragon from us without paying and throws us in jail for transporting a dangerous animal without permit ?
      What if its parents are looking for it?
      " You guys look funny, what are you talking about ?" waging its tail.
      Find the baby's parent : eight hill giants later...the local baron's hunting rangers, and really getting lost in the forest,( thank gods the mother was happy we found her baby and lend us out of the forest to a safe location.)
      { honestly how much trouble can a baby dragon can be ? It is only seven foot long, nose to tip of tail. Really over all it is barely the size of a mountain lion, and it is talkative. Damn, it asks more questions then my little sibling does.
      Does it ever SHUT UP ! Get out of the hornet's net ! }

      @@krispalermo8133 ,
      Indeed!
      Some look at me strange when I proclaim there to be 'collectives' of green dragons and that such behavior is not that uncommon within the species. Within this video it is touched on in passing, a single line here and there, on how it all works but you present the largest part of the puzzle many over look: Family. This particular type of dragon will never forget just what type of family other green dragons are, and thus will instantly give other green dragons the guarded respect that is deserved. That is also why age and reputation play a large part as well, these are the building blocks on which one can judge just how much of that respect is warranted.
      Us mortals - We are lucky to be useful tools, we should leave Dragons to do the real thinking.
      As for how much trouble a baby green dragon can be:
      Those are born with above average (8 is average commoner) intelligence and a full understanding of what they are. That little 'woe is me' is very likely an act because as it was the most convenient way to manipulate the party. There is nothing like a whole bunch of slaves tending for your well being, even if you have to string them along with an act....

      @@lostbutfreesoul I left my comment 6 months ago, is your notifier not working ?
      Some times I see a pass post where someone left me two or more question and it was a couple of weeks before it shown up for me to " notice." They were good questions and I do not like to keep people waiting.
      Sounds like you had some really good fun running dragons against your players' character parties from time to time.:)
      20 some years ago I ran an open campaign setting at a game shop. We a had more than a few players who just treated NPC/ monsters as 2d flat Xp awards with no " life." So I ...." cough, cough,"... forced a few of them to RPG monster/ dragons. One guy got so wrap up into his dragon he had a fit that his side character dragon was " Killed Off," like a punk..! ( Which WAS against shop Rules)
      The guy running the game was, " It is my game, his NPC dragon is killed dead so he can just make a new dragon NPC what ever. I am the DM.) The young punk just had such a rude tone and a F.U. face, even the shop owner was within a second of throwing his group out.
      As it has been stated over 40+ years of D&D, red dragons will not use their fire breath if there is a change they we burn away " their " treasure. Also other than reds being rage rampaging monsters, even they know to flee a battle if facing death. They can just flee their lair and cause a " cave in " leading into their lair to trap the adventures within.
      Best way to kill a large dragon, bribe another dragon to help.
      As for a baby dragon being as smart as an average human, well the average human is still not very smart, and humans have a problem with believing their own bull crap way to often.....
      Farmer," Are you guys professional hunter ? Well, I have a baby dragon that dug a lair under my barn and it has been eating all the rats. With my cat being out of a job."
      Adventure," So what is the problem ?"
      Farmer," The Dam thing is getting bigger, my youngest can ride on its back in flight, and it is no longer asking me questions. It is telling me what to do around the farm. It is getting to big and smart for my own good."
      Halfling adventure, " Awesome now I can get that air mail delivery business going !"
      My personal favorite, it is not a " troll " that lives under the river bridge but a adult large size green dragon. The dragon craved flat the road through the local hills so a wagon can more easily make trade runs. It maintains the roads and eats the local " monsters," to protect the hamlets and villages for a small cost. If anyone is rude " IT," Green have no problem with pining that person down to the ground and clawing one of their foots off.
      The local people are very " friendly " to Their dragon. (" Charm spells,") even those who have not been charmed, are really grateful for the road the dragon put in, and the Green One claws up the fields a few times each year for easy plow work. Even when the dragon wants its " alone " time, there are a few dozen scouts, rangers, " bandits" within a few thousand feet of the dragon's location to given aid.
      a.) the location has become a quick trade rout and there are merchants and nobles that want control of it. With or without the dragon being there.
      Even if the adventures are just passing through. They can get draw into to save the dragon or to kill the dragon plots.
      Hope you are having a good weekend.

      As for my area,there was the river, the creek, thick soft wood hedge rows, log out patch forest with thick under growth, ravines, and corn fields. Out side of that with miles and miles of soy bean fields. Most people that live in the city I went to school with never set foot in the locals corn fields even after harvest.
      The hills around the main river can kill a horse and you can twist your ankle
      with little to no effort. and the farmland is nearly 30 miles/ 50 km of flat land. The joke when I was growing up was, you only read a book when you got tired of looking out across of nothing. So you had people act like there was only the city and nothing else mattered.

I rolled a nat 1 on a young green dragon and he wound up acting like Napoleon Dynamite... needless to say there was no fight we just helped him leave his crumbling tower literally helped him pack, and well he set up shop in a cave that was a meeting spot for necromancers. Needless to say we got rid of two town pests with one go. Progress I guess?

    You forgot about two things that set the green dragons apart from other dragons relatively easily, even with just the skeleton: they have the longest necks and legs, an adaptation to their forest environments which gives them their giraffe-like physique (to look over the tall trees without having to stand up, to more easily skip shrubbery and other obstacles, etc.).
    Otherwise, great job as always! (Although I would like to hear about their hoards and favoured treasure, too! :P )

    But do the baby green dragons reciprocate the love the parents give them?
    Maybe if someone found a dying green dragon (a mortally wounded one), maybe it could be a quest to deliver the eggs (or wyrmlings if they hatch earlier than expected), maybe in exchange of their hoard and scales (for making guard drakes), and as time passes, the baby green dragon hatches, which could open a HUGE roleplaying possibility (maybe take a bit of advantage of the strong parental bond so they can kinda reform the baby, use that cunning and silver tongue for good, or at least neutral stuff).

    • @DkKombo
      @DkKombo 5 лет назад +19

      The green dragon baby would not care and still be cunning.
      But it would be more funny and exciting for it to be raised by someone who is even more cunning.

    My players are doing LMoP which of course leads to a showdown with Venomfang in Thundertree. This definitely opens up some interesting ideas.
    By the book, the dragon is supposed to flee if it is hurt enough, but of they kill it the bloom of life would be amazing.

      Also green dragons dig ponds and rake up unplowed fields for farmers and barons for trade. ( Dragon ! Run for your lives ! Oh ? Uh ? Give it a few pigs or a cow to show we are very happy that it helped us with the labor.)
      Dragon digging a hole that turns into a 20 foot pit.
      Farmer: Are you looking for something ? ( Dam this is odd .)
      Dragon : No , I saw dogs dig hole till the only thing sticking out of the ground is their tails. It look like they were having fun while doing so. And I was wondering that your mamma would yell at me like she does when the dog does it .
      "Dam it ! the dog is digging in front of the door again. Go do something about it."
      Guy opens the door , fails a ref sv DC:13 and falls 10ft down into a pit in front of his house for 1d6 dmg. Now he is on his backside looking face to face with a green dragon.

      For me it is the cunning.
      Much of the old lore warns that dragons are plotting and conniving creatures, but very few dragons in D&D embrace this. They instead favor their magics or raw strengths, and tend to embody the more brutal aspects of old folk tales. This is an unfortunate side-effect of D&D's origins as a war-game, where you pulled out dragons so the party could defeat them in an epic battle.
      Greens, however, fully embodied that cunning and manipulative personality from an early stage. Instead of simply jumping out to destroy you for being in their terrain, they will set up obstacles that you have to overcome just to get to the fight. You can be that fight will also be very, very, dirty... which makes them much more enjoyable a boss.

    8:06 a Tundra has Finnish roots that means treeless plain. Think of it as a cold desert. Examples is Iceland and green land, or Whiterun from Skyrim. Green dragons are most likely found in temperate forest such as temperate rainforest seen in the coastal redwoods of the north pacific, deciduous forest like Appalachian, and borreal forest like Southern Canada and Siberia. I think a better explain that can be added to the lore for green dragons avoiding Tropical rainforest is mainly due to high competition, species density, parasites, and other pathogens.

    • @hawkmore
      @hawkmore 5 лет назад +13

      Raid Leet I think the answer for this is less about Dragons and more about D&D as a whole. It really is a game of set alignments.
      Gnolls aren’t misunderstood, they’re evil. They are inherently evil because they are created by a gnoll god who passes his traits down to them. There is an orc god who created the orcs and turned them into pillaging monsters.
      Many of the creatures have set personality types, because it’s a world of magic and they are literally born with it.
      There are exceptions to this, however. It is absolutely possible to have a metallic dragon fall from grace and turn evil, it would just be incredibly, incredibly rare because they’re fighting their base instincts

    • @michaelthompson3262
      @michaelthompson3262 5 лет назад +11

      Mostly because the metallic dragons are aligned with the lawful good dragon god Bahumut, while the chromatic dragons are aligned with the lawful evil dragon god Tiamat. That being said the alignment system isn’t an absolute, just what the dragons would usually do. I.e yes there are evil gold dragons and good green dragons but those are a small minority of the species.

    • @lolasian1016
      @lolasian1016 5 лет назад +3

      I'm pretty sure it's because chromatic dragons are inherently evil due to their ties to Tiamat and metallics good because of Bahamuet.

    • @jaydenray2803
      @jaydenray2803 5 лет назад +5

      This is why alignment is becoming less important to the game. Nothing says a gold dragon can't be evil, its just common place for them to be good. As for Bahamat and Tiamat, being created by them may influence their behavior but not set it in stone.

    • @Burncsb

    A green dragon graveyard can be a good gateway to the fey wild.

    As someone who lives in the forest and luvs the forest... I TOTALLY get the distinction between forests and jungles. Like... to me forests feel "home" and delightful.. jungles feel "harsh" and oppressive... >_

    At 2:50 or somewhere earlier you say it’s the adult green dragon even though it’s a wyrmling, the adults info is about the same size as the gold dragons info

    It makes sense for green dragons to inhabit forests; their coloration would camouflage them. Their natural habitat is why they're my favorite.

    Aww, Even though green dragons are unmistakably evil tricksters they are really caring parents like blue ones.

    Definitely my favorite entry in the 5e MM. I've designed my favorite campaign exclusively off of ideas from this one entry.
