This is THE best Nobels shootout ON THE INTERNET. Every Nobels pedal I was considering is HERE. You have a commanding knowledge and expertise that only comes with experience and credibility. Thank you for the amazing video! Those small businesses that are INNOVATING are the guys who make the inspiring pedals that drive the fun, not the cheap knock off clones. Keep the cool kids cool!
Hi, this is Kai - I invented the original Nobels ODR-1 circuit in 1992 ;-) Thank you for the nice comment on my ODR-C (ODR-CC+). Btw. you can read my development of the ODR-1 on my website ;-) It is really funny to see how many other pedal makers were inspired of (or copied) my ODR-1
Thank you Mr. Kai for re-releasing an amazing pedal. The improvements in the ODR-C are amazing and I'm ecstatic to have the opportunity to purchase from the inventor and designer. Without your help the vintage market would preclude many of us from being able to have a pedal as good (or in my view - better) as the original. Well done Sir!
Hi Corey, Somebody just led me to your video stream on ODRs. Thank you so much for the kind words, and thank you for doing such a great comparison. I've seen other guys demo this pedal (and others) with the drive cranked up so much it's hard to even tell what the actual sound is. It looks like you set it pretty much the same as I do. I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to meet and work together when I was still in Nashville. My player friends are what I miss the most! Thanks again and feel free to reach out if you need anything I can help you with...Greg
I've got the ODR-1BC, the mini and got the Karma ODR-10 as soon as it was released. The ODR-1's I use as clean boosts, but the ODR-10 is one of my best drive pedals!
I’m extremely critical of pedals and get along with very few. I picked up a 30th anniversary ODR-1 and it’s absolutely incredible. Absolutely wonderful organic feels like an amp. It’s pretty amazing. It has crunch warmth and clarity. All at the same time feels supernatural under the fingers and the base cut knob is perfect. You can dial it in so it feels just under your fingers and you sit perfectly in the mix
Hands-down best nobels odr-1 shootout of all time. Well done corey!!! The nobels odr is my favorite pedal and to see this whole video of shootouts has been amazing
I'm a Belle owner. I love this pedal as a boost, as a mid gain and as a full gain od. I'm not completely sold on the minipedal format and the kind of switch but for the 100€ i paid for it i think it's phenomenal. Wampler should make a dual pedal with a Belle + Tumnus + the gate on the Andy Wood Gearbox I remember hearing and ODR style drive for the first time. It was on a That pedal show when the Shanks was released and they were blown away with it. Since then they did a bunch of ODR shows. - When Wampler came with the Belle i thought... "now's the time!" Great livestream, Corey!! Great stuff as always. Careful with the mic when switching from livestream to the videos ;-) Other than that, beautiful stuff and fantastic production.
Yay!!!!! So glad to see you did this video!!! Bummed I missed it live but so glad I can still watch the replay. And yeah, I’ve been saying it for a while but the original Nobels odr-1 is getting into mythical status since so many people are cloning it now. Also the originals are in the $2000 range which is pretty impressive for an originally $40 pedal 💛💚
My odr1 has been a huge part of my rig for several years now and they have been amazing and supportive even though I(VoyageOfSoundMusic) am not a big well known artist!
I have an off the shelf modern ODR-1 and using the bass cut switch gets you to the same place. Loving mine and it is not leaving my board. Great job highlighting all of these!!
I've really enjoyed having the Belle and 30th Anniversary on my two boards. Particularly, the gold ODR-1 has a really clear and articulate sound, and feels great. It almost reminds me of a cross between the ODR-1 and the Greer Lightspeed! This video really showcases how close the clones can get to the original when you dial them in. I'm looking forward to trying a few of the others ODR-1 clones as well. Thanks Corey!
Very interesting video! I've tried a whole lot of flavors of drives over the years but never the ODR1 so... yeah I've gotta pick one now and give it a shot!
great Live Corey wish i could of been here live. I have a bukartie boo. and Love it. I've played Ford's nobles and it's as close as I've come to those as far as feel. So many choices. They all sound great.
Woah. The karma ODR-10 sounded like the switched wasn’t working for a second. Visually I was seeing the light change but I wasn’t hearing any difference. Amazing. Glad I have one of those too.
Great video - I ordered the Karma. It sounded as close to identical as I could tell. When you use the ODR-1, do you run it into other pedals or boosts into it? Love this new format!
I have the Karma. Great pedal. It's my always on pedal. Great character to the guitar tone. Sounds great with other pedals. I also bought Karma's MTN-10. This is Karma's take on the Ibanez Mostortion.
Price wise (in the UK at least), the cheapest options here are the 30th Anniversary or the Wampler Belle. Just £10 difference. It's a no-brainer to pick one of those, for me, they all sound great.
Picked up the 30th anniversary Nobels last week. Tried the Noble Screamer previously. It is a great quality pedal, and would probably work great for most folks. However, tone is in the bone, and my hands make every guitar I pick up sound darker. Even without the bass cut the 30th Nobels isn’t as wooly in the low end to start, but the added versatility of the cut is very useful to me personally. In addition, the range of gain is more subtle giving you as little or as much as you need. It’s a great time to be a bedroom picker with lots of great folks making great pedals from which to choose.
The Vemuram is the only one I can’t wrap my head around. They all sound fantastic but I have never understood why they charge so much for their pedals? I have asked on forums and always get the, “you just have to try it to understand!” Reply but in all seriousness, how can they charge what they do? Are they using components that are exceptionally pricey? I just don’t get why anyone would pay $500+ here in Canada for the Shanks when you could just get the Belle, ODR-1, Keeley etc for half the price.
Agreed. Recently, local to me 2nd hand, Belle $130, ODR1 $100, Nordland $325. I can't explain the Nordland either, but maybe there's something I don't know about them. Fairy dust is pretty expensive, so that must be it.
It’s because it’s an import. They’re a lot more reasonably priced if you buy in Japan. Not worth the price if you’re buying outside of Japan. The 30th sounds extremely similar, and is a fraction of the cost. Smarter choice imo
I HAD a real KLON in 1995! ($300.00.) Sold it like an idiot. Bought two new Nobels 30th, ($170.00 each.) And just got a Warm Audio Centavo used/mint ($118.00.) My NEW pedals, are just badass!!!
Awesome shootout Corey! I'm shocked by the Karma - it sounded identical. Where do you run the ODR on your pedalboard? Do you stack it with other pedals?
@coreycongilio - Just curious if you ran the ODR-10 from Karma at 9 or 18v. I don't recall seeing it in the video. I've been told running at 18v is the way to go. Thanks in advance!
@@coreycongilio Thanks. I knew it would, but wasn't sure what you used to get such a match. Made me wish I hadn't sold mine LOL. And so here we go again!
I listened to/watched this and in my opinion, the 30th anniversary is the best, and in some ways even better than the old one. I am blessed/cursed with a very discriminating ear and there is something I hear in the other ones that is hard to describe, but I will try. The Nobels has a softer clip on the initial attack.....not wimpy, but it sounds rounder on the top and bottom, whereas the modern ones all sound harsher to me. After the initial attack, the meat of the note or chords sounds pretty dang close, but something about the modern ones sounds thicker to me, not in a pleasant way. Same goes for the top end sweetness of the Nobels......I don't hear that in the others. I'm not an engineer, and this is all anecdotal, so I don't know how to account for the difference, but there are little things about them all that I disliked. The Shanks sounds harshest to me actually, and the Wampler seems to be missing something sweet in the highs..... Anyhoo....I bought the 30th.
It’s interesting that to my ears, both the ODR-1 and the Klon are good but nothing earth shattering. The Clark Gainster is better to my ears. Great video however. Always great content
Jetzt mal ehrlich, die klingen doch wirklich sehr schön, aber auch sehr ähnlich, ich denke, man kann auch vergleichen, wie unterschiedlich Flöhe husten 😮
I agree with the Karma… not a fan of where the power input is..i might mod it to put it up on top. Wish Greg will listen to customer input… keeping size down to sacrifice convenience?? im not fan of.. all pedals i used have everything on top… i have to fidget with the interconnect cables to make both cables fit .. at least maybe give it a couple of inches apart 😂.. Great sounding clone tho!
Hard to fathom why someone would pay so much for an overdrive pedal that emulates the sound of an amplifier when the pedal and amp both cost the same amount of money. At least Karma (and others, but Karma seems to be the closest clone to the original) is fairly reasonably priced. I like these with a fender strat and fender amp, since they seem to boost the middle frequencies that are a bit lacking with that combo, but paying $1,500 seems a bit nuts.
Had the OD-1 in the 90s being in Nashville. Turns out it was an overdrive. Just buy a Keeley Noble Screamer and get two pedals+ ...unless you're into proving how much money you have to waste.
Answer: No. It can't because it was never handmade with goop covering the circuit to prevent...uh, clones. Far more important is the fact that it doesn't look as cool as Klon. I've had half a dozen Nobels overdrives and another half dozen clones. They're all good (except the Mini.) I don't know what the fuss is about the clan but no pedal is worth $1,500 unless it's actually made of gold.
In this video I'll demo the Nobels ODR-1 30th Anniversary model. I will also compare it to 7 other ODR-1 style pedals including my original model from the 90's. Wow I never thought I’d say this but I prefer that 30th anniversary over the original in many of the examples. Wow 😱😱😱

It's funny how some designers really get it right the 1st time. Noble did it with the ODR1, and the new gold version was best of the bunch.
