My mother was an accomplished artist, clothing designer and seamstress. After this film, titled" The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh", aired on The Wonderful World of Disney my mother made a faithful replica of the Scarecrow's costume. I remember, being the age of nine or so, Mom sewing together rafts of straw to place strategically throughout the garment/hat and it was a hit for Halloween of 1964. I wore the refreshed costume the next Halloween, with more straw(!), working a different part of the neighborhood and adjacent homes.
After that my younger brothers wore the costume, repaired each year (made to look as tattered as it did compared to the original Polaroid photograph of it) through at least 1969 and it was lost to time after that because neither I nor my brothers, who remember it too, don't know what became of it. The costume had a chest-piece which joined with the shoulder pads to support the wooden dowel behind the neck to give the tunic a real scarecrow's drape. The painted burlap mask had a satin inner-facing to prevent it from making the face itchy. Very cool.

@@haydenysidro9388 Thank you. My mother was really into suiting-up her young ones for Halloween. When I was four years-old she made a Robin (Batman and Robin) costume that I wore extensively. Today, whenever I see certain combinations of yellow, red and green I get a strong sense of that costume from almost fifty-nine years ago.

Cool story. My grandmother could sew and make clothing, and she made the Sorcerer and his apprentice (from Disney's "Fantasia") costumes for my older brother (Sorcerer) and myself (Apprentice). Later, the costumes were re-used and worn by me (Sorcerer) and my younger sister (Apprentice).

The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh is a brilliant British epic come to life on the screen with great actors at the height of their careers and unforgettable music as well. It literally never gets old.
Say what you will about Walt Disney the man...but the artist and business man could tell a good story, run the world's best theme park and set hundreds of legendary entertainment events in motion.
As I look back at life in America since the 1950's, the influence that Disney had on each and every young mind, my own included, is incalculable.
If you've any doubt about Walt's intentions towards strengthening young minds, watch 'Donald Duck ln Mathmagic Land' and grow wise.

Interesting to read these comments, which are clearly mostly by Americans who think of Dr Syn as a Walt Disney creation. We in Britain have always loved the original half-dozen novels, written by Russell Thorndyke [brother of Sybil Thorndyke]. The original Dr Syn is written as partly this 'Robin Hood' kind of figure, but also as having been, previously, a desperate and cruel pirate; his excuse for that being that he fell into those evil ways when pursuing his runaway Spanish wife and her lover. Quite a bit more realistic than this film - though the film is very enjoyable.

So many comments regarding this film fair enough. But would never have been made without Russel Thorndyke!. Doesn't anyone read anymore. Fantastic books for young adults to read.

Yes it is, though not much history in this movie.LOL One of the locomotives on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is named Dr. Syn. www.rhdr.org.uk/locomotives/doctor-syn/ Wonderful place and wonderful railway --- of course a large part of the Romney Marshes are in East Sussex as well as Kent - equally rich in History.

Love this film. I have a very old vhs copy that I try to keep safe as it’s not really available to buy anymore. So glad to see this as I don’t like playing the tape in case I break it!

This was a great story. What many don't know, though, is several of the actors in this later would play pivotal roles in the James Bond series of films.

And the actor who plays Dr Syn also went on to play in the movie Silver Spoons and had a small but crucial role in The Punishers.

@@trhansen3244 Actually, Patrick McGoohan had a fantastic career. He was the lead it two major groundbreaking British series and also did four very well written and acted *_Columbo_* mysteries, to name a few things he did.

It's been so many decades that I'd forgotten this Walt Disney story save for a vague memory of a man dressed as a Scarecrow (and not part of the Batman franchise.) Lovely to have found it here. How I miss the days of Mr. Disney before he died and the current Corporation crap took over. Harsh taskmaster, but a brilliant capitalist. Seeing what's become of his company, I can't blame him anymore for having kept a firm grip on it while still alive. Wish he could have lived and in good health for decades more.

I watched this in the early sixties and would love to see it again. Hope you can find it and upload it to your site.

When I saw this 50 years ago, I knew he was a hero, but he was a SCARY hero! I was but a wee lad. I didn't see the original release of Feb 1964 - I saw a rebroadcast several years after on CBC (did NBC also broadcast the Wonderful World of Disney?).
