  • In this video I replace an axle shaft u-joint, and install a new axle seal on a 2012 f-550. I attribute my successes to god and give him the glory. for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which god prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10.

    A bit easier than doing the same job in a muddy barn yard and having to use a length of PVC pipe as a seal driver, but we got it done. I would love to have a concrete floored shop under a roof. Walls would even be nice.

      I know what you mean. I have to do everything outside at my house. I hope to have a garage some day. I just bought one of those ujoint pullers last week. I got tired of fighting to change them and i finally got one. It was about 50 dollars. Hopefully it doesn’t break the first time I use it. I feel your pain having to do it outside though.

    No prying... put 1/4 ext and 8mil socket on unit seal and axle tube and turn the wheel rear top then bottom front no matter how siezed on it will come out with zero struggle the unit bearing comes out same way...power steering is your friend.

    So have you ever thought about getting the special U joint puller tool or at least a ball joint press the removal will go a lot smoother faster and efficient

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  2 года назад +2

      I have thought about the special tool but I don’t really replace to many ujoints so I haven’t gotten one. I have a ball joint press, and I usually do use it for ujoints. I can’t really explain why I didn’t for this other than I might have tried to make the video about doing it without special tools, I can’t remember. I have a video on changing the ujoints in the front drive shaft that I used a ball joint press to do. Good questions though. Part of the reason I don’t have the special tool is there are a few different sizes and they can get pretty expensive. The ball joint press I find much more useful. Thank you for watching.

    What’s the seal behind the joint you changed called
    The one in video is axle shaft seal or knuckle seal
    But what about smaller one behind the ujoint

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  Год назад +1

      I’m not exactly sure on the name but I think it is the axle tube dust seal. Or might be called outer axle tube seal.

    I have a question is there supposed to be play in the Bering on the axle on either side of the u joint if so can that be replaced without a hydraulic press?

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  3 года назад

      I’m a little confused on what your asking. Do you mean the knuckle where the joints is has some play inside the axle housing? If so the vehicle we have basically do the same thing. It depends on the design of the axle though. The dodge axle shafts have a nut on them that hold the bearing together so those would have no real play in them but the Fords it just has a snap ring holding it in the bearing and I find ours all have some movement to them. It’s not a lot but there is some.

      @@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic yes the bearings towards the engine and towards the road on the drive shaft to the left and right of the u joint they seem to have what I would seem to much play because when I replaced the double u joint on my John Deere 5400 the mfwd drive shaft had a bushing that stabilized the shaft then a bering seal and on the axle/diff casting was also a seal then bushing there's considerable more play in the bushing then the tractor had when I pulled the bushing out and hammered the new one in , unlike the tractor where i have weingartz parts to see parts diagrams to even begin to know what to search for on my 2012 f350 super duty and right now I know I need the u joint bering and the seal as a given for replacing the joint but after that I'm lost

      I just check the passenger axle and there is probably a good 1/8 to 1/4 inch up and down play in it. All the trucks are like this. The steering knuckle seal is pretty elaborate and requires a driver to set the depth and keep it all aligned and straight. There is a bearing for the axle shaft in the front bearing hub. I don’t think there are bearings in the axle tubes.

  • @awack_

    you put the vacuum seal on backwards.

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  Год назад

      If your talking about the large seal that goes on the axle itself then it only goes on one way. The seal on the hub bearing is an oring and so is the one on the hub lock. If your saying I put it on in the wrong order and not on the axle first well it really doesn’t matter it works both ways and I have had no problems putting it on in either order. It’s probably a little easier putting it on the axle first but it’s been in there for as long as the video has been up and hasn’t been a problem.

      I’ve changed ujoints with a hammer quite a few times. I’m confident I would be able to do it again. Usually I like to use a ball joint press because there is less risk knocking the needle bearings out while installing the caps but it’s still doable

      This doesn’t make any sense… this is exactly the way you remove old u-joints, unless you want to go out and spend money on pullers and fidget hand over hand trying to get alignment correct while simultaneously holding a ratchet or an impact… I like his method better. I’ve done it many times and have never had ONE problem.
