Shout out to P’s vocal range. He had a very low bottom and then he would on a second turn up that register and knock out a perfect falsetto. Geesh! He was multifaceted in so many areas! I enjoyed this video… I learned so much. Thank you!
Prince could make a Shure SM 58 and a DBX 160 sound perfect..... it all starts with the SOUND the artist is producing. MJ and Bruce Swedien made vocals unlike any others
Plus MJ worked with Quincy and the best sound designers for synths in the industry and best sound engineers. So you did not only have one of the most unique voices in the industry, but also the most talented people around him for designing sounds and making tracks. There is a reason Off the wall, thriller and bad sounds so good. Its not like Michael Jackson went full Bruce Springsteen at any point, and decided to make a hit, on a 4 track tape recorder at his home.
One of the API Demedio consoles was in Wally Heider Studio 4, it was used to record Gram Parsons' GP and Grevous Angel. Then Rob Schnapf/Tom Rothrock got a hand on it and used it to record some of Elliott Smith's Either/Or. It had an extra transformer in the signal path so they called it "the round mound of sound". CAPI made a 500 series preamp based on it called the "Heider FD312 H2"
Hahahahaha, you got it. I actually found footage of Prince spinning and shooting a basketball on stage from the 80's, LOL. No not yet. I'm definitely planning to go. REALLY? That LinnDrum is something. They are like $8K right now. I wish they will do a re-release but not change anything but the compatible connection and safe voltage, lol. Thank you for commenting!
the price of a U47 also depends a lot on the condition and on how vintage you go. 1950's one will typically cost that much. They all have serial numbers which can be used to date them and sometimes get some provenance / history of where it was used and who by. Currently seeing #1440 on Reverb priced under 20k. You can still pick up 1176 but its a big spend, maybe 7k.
$50,000 just doesn’t seem like enough. Prince, Sam Cooke, Elvis, James Brown, Steve Perry, Sinatra ... I feel like they deserve million dollar vocal chains. People make don’t understand what a savage engineer, Prince was. Thanks for making this video. 🫡
Another dope video bro, this is my vocal chain , depending if I have subscription or not 🤣🤣🤣 Fruity Parametric EQ 2 Teletronix LA-2A Waves Real Time Tune Fruity Reverb SSL Channel Strip Struder Tape Machine
Teletronix made the original LA-2A ... API 440 are the faders on the console ... they aren't EQ's ... don't believe everything you read. The mic pre back then was a 312 card ... the EQ was mostly a 550/550a/560 ....
Somewhat agree. Perhaps you could translate these vocal chains to something for today’s day and age. Or better play Purple rain and re record it in what you think is best chain for people in this day and age with reasonable budget and showcase both. Emphasizing trade offs.
Prince is a TRUE legend. His Purple Rain vocal chain was very unique and had tons of depth. I hope you all enjoy! Thank you for watching!

Dave Chappelle reference. Have you been to Paisley Park Studios? They have all 3 studios for tours. His LINN drum machine is on display in Studio A.

The Urei 1176 is still around. You just have to find it used. I saw it for around $7000 for a pair on Reverb.

It's a pretty common vocal chain
May I ask what is the point of these kind of "vocal chain" videos? Viewers did not learn anything from useless content. Go make some music instead.
