If you know what to expect, the SD2IEC is a wonderful device.

It surely has advantages, but also serious disadvantages. Just dont expect what it cannot do.

If you install a 1581 ROM on the SD2IEC, Action Replay will detect the unit as a 1581 and use that fastloader. It means turbo will work just as well as TFC3, JiffyDOS, Epyx Fastload, Dreamload etc.

Im confused. You dont install drive ROMs in this unit.

@@FairLight1337 I meant using the XR command:
XR:name Set the file used for file-based M-R emulation

Ok, this is beyond what I have seen.

Very clarifying. and it's really a hassle as you want to run most if not everything out there. A pity that C= made such a big mistake with the speed of the disc drive.

They made it compatible with older perephrials to lower the threshold for buying a new computer. And the Kernal ROM is also very limited so adding faster loader would then also likely mean a need for more space. So all things considered, it was a rather reasonable position they took.

The biggest problem with the SD2IEC is all the resellers don't disclose the limitations of the device. So so many buy one thinking it is a direct replacement of a 1541.

I have had one of these for a few years and it's useful for simple file load and save but no fast loader support. It does have a nice navigation menu program FB64.PRG which lets you search through the D64 disk files on the SD card and mount them as disks which you can then load just like you had inserted a disk on the C64. But yes it's just basic Disk emulation no fancy stuff.

Id say its "serial protocol emulator" - not "drive emulating". I think its here people get it wrong. But apart from that I agree

The pi1541 is a good solution too

Only now do I understand this part of the sd2iec's firmware docs and realise multiload demos/games don't use the only method that works with CHRIN, Jiffy!
Multiload games typically do not use LOAD but CHRIN when loading additional parts. This can get accelerated with kernal extensions only.
(Jiffy) Also accelerates EE13/CHRIN used by many multiload applications. On a 1541, about 10x speed if file saved using Jiffy.
    sd2iec is a typical sd2iec-based device (an SD2IEC 1.2 in this case).
Taught me not to be a cheapskate and should've got an Ultimate cart sooner!

Pi1541 is a better solution. Emulates the drive in full and works with custom loaders. And its alot cheaper than ultimate ii and turbo chameleon.
Can you please do a review of it too?

That one I need to test to see if its what it says.

I've read very mixed reviews about the Pi1541. Some claim it works 100%, some claim it has a lot left to be desired. Perhaps it depends on who is the operator.

Im sure the answer is somewhere in the middle. I use and Ultimate64 so I have had no need for one, and hence never tested it.
