UPDATE: I finally figured out why the microphone wasn't working! It was because the screen capture app I was using had control over the mic so Hello Chinese couldn't access it. 🤦😂

I’ve been living in China now for 5 years, and this app has helped me more than any teacher. It really is worth using this. In case of the speaking and tones, it helps if you speak slower and make the tones more pronounced that in real life situations. Interestingly, my Chinese students always compliment me on my pronunciation. So to me it is really a good app.

I finished duolingo first, and learned a lot there. I think doing hello Chinese afterwards has taken me further, especially having to comprehend native speakers has been useful. Someone commented that they muttered, but that is what real life people do, so super useful. I am not certain whether doing HC exclusively would have been enough, but it certainly is bringing me to a new level.

I also was doing a bit of Chinese course on Duolingo but I think that it's just terrbile. There was only a few words in the first lessons but many characters. As almost every Chinese teacher says that we should learn characters later, when we know vocabulary and grammar, that app is just the opposite. It was to much of that stuff, it was imposible to remeber all of those characters (there was no explanation about what they mean, just one word including them in the next exercise or sth). I used Duolingo also for other languages and it was pretty much fun, but in this case, I completely advise against learning Chinese in this app. Remember, there is a lot of other apps for Chinese learning and quite many videos on RUclips.

I've noticed that too. "Ma" is also the cliché example in Vietnamese, which is also a tonal language.
It also reminds me of how, when explaining how Arabic grammar works, most resources tend to use the root K-T-B (like in "kitāb" or "maktab")

About the pronunciation exercises: It is not perfect of course, but still much better than what most other apps offer in that respect (Many just record you and you can listen to yourself and the solution of the app. Might be OK for advanced learners, but when you start off you might have trouble hearing the differences.
Others have a very lacking speech recognition and accept almost everything that you say. And I have seen no other app with decent speech recognition that also colors the spoken sentence to indicate what you pronounced well and what not so well.
Notice that I did most of the comparing approximately one year ago, when I started learning Chinese.)

Also sad you didn’t click on any of the podcast things with each lesson 😭 the first few are free at least… and it’s a pretty advanced learner speaking with a native speaker about some quirks of the language, cultural connections, even memes, etc haha. I'm curious about the recommendation to learn the Pinyin first. I'm wanting to learn Chinese, without the immediate plan to go to China, so my primary area to use Chinese will be the internet, so I'd like to focus on reading. I'm curious what you think of this, how you would recommend me proceed.
I have learned a little but have forgotten all but a little.

I would still learn pinyin first, because you'll have to speak at some point, right? Just start with a basic program to learn beginner level stuff, and once you're ready for some real world material, you can actually find some good practice on Tiktok/Douyin because they tend to be short phrases.

I would still recommend learning pinyin first.
As a Chinese native, when I was learning both Chinese and English, I find the ability of pronouncing the things your reading very important. Both in remembering the meanings of words, and in understanding the sentences.
This is just my opinion, but to me, languages are first spoken, then written. Without the ability to make sounds, it is very hard to create connections between meanings and squiggly lines on a surface.

Personally, I avoided pinyin because I wanted to learn without thinking in pinyin.

I did not do pinyin first lmfao. Regretful because I sometimes pronounce things wrong. But I can text, voice, read and listen to chinese just fine.

But the downside is, I end up having to look up the word in a dictionary to find the pronunciation 😭

Really good stuff and all what i learned about your introduction to HelloChinese is that they for sure "copied" a lot from a Chinese learning site called Yoyo Chinese and the grammar they covered almost used the same way as Yoyo Chinese did. Well, it's really about their business, but tbh, I personally don't think it's a good thing.

Hee! I used this app for all of maybe 1 week and then I got bored and went back to my normal method of learning. None of the apps I've used have ever interested me long enough.

They may have updated it, it said my pronunciation was correct on the first try. It might also be your internal microphone on your phone.

can you do a tutorial for an app i just subbed too. it seems to do everything backwards as i am looking for flash cards to learn and it is asking me if it know what i am looking at instead so i have the worlds lowest scores as i learn and i need to know if this is on purpose or i am just lost. the app is WRITE CHINESE. IT has four parts writer is an app with a piece floating down to you and you tap and then copy it. flash card is very hard to see and give you verbal queues and then you must pick the cards instead of view and here and then choose later from multiple choice. i prefer the latter but need to learn the write so i got it anyway. please do a tutorials.
