This coronavirus crisis showed me how many people are incompetent and stupid in America, and it's frustrating living here during this time.

Too many Americans believe the best type of government is an ineffective one, incompetent and weak.
Before I came to this country myself I used to believe that was just a joke, maybe the mentality of a small number of nutcases that occasionally took over a national park and nothing more. It was only after meeting some otherwise reasonable people did I come to realize how deep into the American psyche that runs. Every group contains these 'never trust the government' types, all with their own reasons as to why and all ignoring any positive things government brings. As if thee people grow up being told that something bad will happen to them, personally, if their own government isn't brought down every chance they get.
Saddest part of all:
It hasn't stopped the things they fear from happening... America is a police state without any of the social benefits!

Ventilators are proven to worsen the effects actually. That's why the death toll was so high in countries with great healthcare, plus giving 4 different prescriptions were given in Italy which lowered the imune system. That's because doctors were in panic because they wanted to help but overdid it. Lancet has peer reviewed research papers on both of those.

Well, we used to have people in place to deal with issues like viruses, but a certain President decided to fire every one of them, and it goes back from day 1 of his Presidency. Apparently, after Obama left, he set up meetings and briefings that would have prepared Trump's administration for situations just like this, but instead of going to them and learning important things, Trump fired all of Obama's people and never went to any the briefings. So, we absolutely had measures in place to deal with pandemics, but they were sabotaged from day 1 of Trump's presidency.

After they finally did report about the impact on their country and was nearly shut down, our country was still accepting international travel with no quarentine for another whole month (maybe a bit more). Even when the virus broke out in Italy, we were still accepting foreign travel with no quarentine (except Chinese travel). All this time, when we knew about the extent of the virus, the president denied, on live TV, that coronavirus was a threat to the US at all. He said that we don't need to do anything to prepare because it won't reach here.

How can a comedy show have and make more SENSE than the entire administration of the United States?
Comedy shows are usually in on their own jokes.
One of those things is an intentional comedy.
That's the thing about people that make jokes at the expense of those in power. Many times, they know MORE about what's happening than the very court itself.
Ever thought of court jesters as mere idiots who could tell jokes and juggle? Remember they were part of the few that knew how to read and write in latin, knew numerous songs and stories by memory, knew a lot of physical tricks... AND were the only ones that could make fun of a king in his face. Jesters in the middle ages were the political comedians of ours.
This historical fact is the reason the "Sad Jester" (Stańczyk) painting is one of my favorites. He's the only one in the court that knows things are utterly fucked up, he's crushed emotionally behind the scenes and staring at a void... while the king and the court celebrate in the party, blind to their failures and to their imminent collapse.

I feel really bad for my american brethren. Im in Canada and have literarally never felt more pride than I have watching my government handle this properly. This whole trump thing is a disaster and I literally cannot understand anyone who still supports him. He is going to have hundreds of thousands die and still pat himself on the back than show a shred of emotion for the victims and their families.
I'm watching the Coronavirus series in late June, and it's crazy how nearly everything John Oliver was saying turned out to be true...
Rest of the world: nope, wasn't crazy, was just normal common sense logic, only Americans will think anything John has said was "crazy" or some kind of shocking prediction that no one could have seen coming.
John Oliver is simply using rational thought and logical behaviour by getting up to date, verified information from EXPERTS globally who dedicate their lives to studying and understanding how and why these diseases work. America currently has over double the amount of any developed country.
Testing, tracing, quarantine and stringent hygiene is the only proven effective strategy currently.

June 26 update: Just passed 35k positive tests a day. A new record this far into the pandemic. You have to be showing symptoms to even get a test in most places

what are you talking about? almost 4% of the US population has been tested in just a couple of months. That's a crazy rate of testing. There is a limit on how fast the tests can be done.

Of course, we couldn’t all hide, so it’s still spreading. I do really think I was a large bit when I first commented this though. But as for the how long, it wouldn’t have ever been feasible but the longest cases last less than 2 months, so 2 months, with Covid tests we could have large amounts of uninfected people doing stuff normal. But some people who have/had Covid don’t/didn’t quarantine.

OH MY GOD THANK YOU!, as a physician I cannot tell you how many patients have asked to be antibody tested and I cannot tell you how many times I have to tell them this does not mean they will not get the infection again and actually may end up mounting a response that is worse then the first exposure/infection, though historically we would not expect that but we just DONT KNOW!. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this show discussing the risks and benefits of testing and types of testing. I wish we could broad cast this show during prime time but somehow I imagine it would still go unheard.

Only North Korea reported people got the virus a second time, but just retracted that a day or two ago saying those people did in fact have something other than covid-19 the second time around, plus you are using John Oliver, the propagandists to further your medical training. Scary! Covid is less deadly that the 2017 flu. They are inflating covid numbers with death from many different causes which is easily proven by the plummeting numbers of heart failure, pneumonia and diabetic related death in 2020 compared with previous years.

I feel like you *have* to remember that, during the period when testing could have really helped, Donald Trump was talking about not wanting patients to come off cruise ships because that would make his sick numbers go up.
Keep that in mind - he wasn't worried about the number of sick people - he was worried about *acknowledging* the number of sick people. His attitude was not someone that cared about people dying or had the *slightest* interest in having more tests available.
And later he bragged about taking the cruiseship in ( "nobody wanted to take them...but I did the right thing") and dont forget there where a lot of us citizens onboard

I remember reading an article that said the virus would cause the most deaths in America than anywhere else; I can't remember the details of why. This was back in February 2020. Sadly, that analysis was spot on!
I had the test and it wasn't that bad. It's like a needle but in your nose and it kind of feels like you blew your nose too hard after. But the pain was just a small pinch and it was very fast. Just sharing this because I was anxious before getting the test. Don't be too freaked out. :)
