Grateful you all are still around. Please keep it going. My first friends I met were in Taos in 1998. Unconditional love and sharing. A vibe that is extremely rare in 2024/5.
In the early 70's inSanta Cruz on the West Side there was this girl just sitting outside a small store next to her backpack. I went inside for a snack but as I left I was just drawn back to her. So I turned around and I asked if she wanted to take a trip down the coast with me. She was headed up to the City but had no hesitation at all and off we went. We drove down to to Bixby Bridge and jumped the barb wite fence and checked the Big Sur River Mouth and beach then went down a bit further to what is now Andrew Morela State Park and we hilked down to the Little Sur River Mouth. We had both beaches to ourselves. We left and I dropped her off where we met and she assured me she was fine to get up to the City. It was months later and my friends and I are on a surf trip to Willow Creek way on the other side south of Big Sur. I was showing my buddies Rampart Range Road when we dive by this hippie gathering off a small road to the right. All of a sudden there is this hippie chick screaming my name running down to meet us and it's her. She leans into the car and gives me a big hug and we catch up a bit while my friends sat slack jawed as if I didn't mention she was gorgeous. We parted and waved goodbye and I never saw her again.
Each of us have these unexpected and amazing experiences in our lives. I have different ones than you have, but the feeling they gave us and the feeling the memory of it still gives us... that is what makes life. I am constantly reminded what a wonderous place the world is.
I hate to say but it took me 2 weeks to clean up a site where about 200 rainbows came through. They brought in but did not take out. Hundreds of trips back across a creek to my car , 10 miles down the road to dump 10 miles back..1 to 2 trips a day and finally i had it clean and back to normal.Castle lake 2011.

I love this so much! I need to come to one of these someday, I dont think they do this where I live in Utah. I love the community everyone has built with this tradition!
I traveled across the country, even hitchhiked part of the way, to the 1997 Rainbow Gathering of the Tribes at Ochoco National Forest in Prineville, OR. I was 18 yrs old, and it was the furthest I had ever traveled away from my home in Indiana. It was probably one of the most unique, and most amazing moments in my life. Two weeks of drumming, dancing in the nude, using the shitters, chanting and praying for peace, among "other" mind expanding things. It's neat to see the movement is still going, and newer generations are joining the Rainbow Family.
I set off from Florida for the first gathering but didn't make it past Boulder. Then the cops shipped me home. I finally went to a gathering at about 40, in the White Mountains. It was weird and a lot dirtier than anything I've experienced before or after. There was a gay mud pit. I liked the Elvis Underground.
@@auntymarushkafah a gay mud pit, lol, sounds interesting. I went to another Rainbow Gathering in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan a few years after Oregon, maybe 2000 or 2001, but it just didn’t compare to my Oregon experience in 97
@@johnsmithers5686 There was also a golf course and warring Hari Krishna factions. I engaged in compulsive hand washing. I kind of wish I'd made it to the first one in 1972, but I had other fun in the Rockies.
Truth is, there is a lot of money involved in these gatherings - it is a heck of lot easier to enjoy this type of escape if you have a nest egg or SSI or parents/family from whom you’ll inherit. It’s fun to think we are above it all but truth is truth.
Lots of resourceful homeless folks, "train hoppers," show up. Once they do, there is free food, camping, and drugs. I was annoyed at having to spend so much of my time searching for food, but t hey are pretty much used to that.
One does not have to go far to find a kitchen at Rainbow. There is sometimes a donation jar. Dinner is served in the centrally located Main Meadow, where the magic hat walks around. "Tea Time" which serves free teas day and night, has a 2 drink minimum. --"Hobo camp", by whatever name, is populated by some very interesting people. "Nick at Night" walks around with buckets, into which one can deposit or remove cigarettes. "Kiddy Camp" is family oriented. Often, they rig up swings and things. At noon on July 4th, they parade into Main Meadow. Silence is broken and dancing begins. Sometimes, hammocks are available for lounging at "Safe Swinging". "Fairy Camp" is what it sounds like. "Stitch 'n Bitch" has chapters throughout the country. For entertainment, there is "Granola Funk Theatre". In the Wasatch mountains, a USFS ranger on a horse once borrowed a guitar, started strumming. Whether they know it or not, the police are our brothers.
It's definitely not what the original gatherings in WA were. Even those had changed a lot towards the end of its time on Gideons property in rainbow valley.
I enjoyed this video so much I can’t even tell you. I could go into specifics, about moments and different topics, etc. But I think I’ll just keep it at that. I enjoyed this video tremendously. Thanks for sharing, Star.

Glad you filmed this very interesting video this is the first time I’ve ever heard of the rainbow gathering ❤ wow 50 years amazing would love to visit one day
They came to our small town and lake in the seventies. There were a lot of them, and many were disgusting. They'd go in the stores, and take pickles out of jars and put the jars back. Grab a couple of slices of bread out of the package, and use their fingers in the peanut butter. They left the lake a giant litter covered mess. I was 17, and thought it was going to be cool, it was not. They have given hippies and communities a bad reputation. They were nothing like the Hippy I wanted to, and still do, want to be.
@@captainjimolchs, I was a kid. Our small town was not prepared for them, as we weren't expecting them. I thought being a Hippie was cool, until they came, or should I say left, and certainly did not leave our place better than they found it, as they should, if they cared at all.
@@edie4321 What town? What state? What year? --I visited a small town once. A group of kids were harassing a poor old lady until I intervened. I suppose that proves that all kids and small towns are bad.
@@captainjimolchs , What are you saying? It's not at all the same. Other people shared having the same in their location. It was TorC, New Mexico, @ Elephant Butte Lake. The Rainbow people. Very disappointing. I'd Love to think it was just a rough year that year, but it keeps repeating. Didn't The King of the Hill also do an episode about them? Now come on.
Elephant Butte is a state park. I find 1 gathering in 1979 in western NM, closer to AZ. Two others, 2009 and 2021 were 250+ miles north of Elephant butte. Whatever you may have experienced was not a Rainbow Gathering. --Following your logic, I might draw negative conclusions about Dwight, Illinois and teen-agers.

In 1969 my local park allowed a love in. I went to the love in. My experience was people laying around in large tents, smoking pot talking about a bunch of random stuff. As a nine-year-old kid I couldn’t give a crap. When I was 22 I went to work for a large corporation. I worked with World War II veterans, Vietnam veterans and hippies. There was a lot of disagreements in the break rooms. The only thing that’s changed about hippies being hippies is their age. They got a lot older. Yes there’s younger ones, but they weren’t there when it all began.
I spent a few days in the white mountains in AZ. Back in 1979 at a rainbow family gathering. Cool times, great memories. Yet a little different experience than what's in this video. Things have definitely changed. ✌
I am 3rd generation born into rainbow, and this was a beautiful video thank you. Good to see that mama in the beginning, she and her twin sister saved me from a bad trip once. Thank you family! 🫶🏽
What fairy tale world do you live in where everyone is just like you? Wake up! There are people with addiction, mental illness which could be anything from bi polar disorder to depression and beings that have real pain whether it be mentally or physically. Some people absolutely need psychedelics, which is a far healthier substitute from prescription pills, drugs and alcohol. If you ratio a psychedelic of your choosing properly, it becomes a medicine and it can heal mind soul body, celestial spirit in one. We are all individuals. We are all different. Open up your third eye and stop putting your narrow minded judgement on others.

Missouri was beautiful with the fireflies, little streams, easy soft trails (Lots of tea lights) and not so spread out. Met some life long friends there when we shared our basket of produce from our garden in Texas. Love n peace
A very groovy video. Reminded me of some of the gatherings in the 60's and very early 70's, some times called 'Love-Ins', 'Be-Ins' or 'Happenings'. Get togethers of Hippies, Free Spirits in parks and or forests for short retreats. Some of them had electric power for live bands to perform at. There were some times super jam seasons which were really groovy, and drum circles with people beating on anything and everything to create a powerful vibration of openness and love.
It looks like a great event, But the times it has been in NE Washington they have left huge mess behind. For wanting to love nature they sure dont take care of it in the end..
Well maybe you should attend. Hunter's vamos ,loggers and general pos do more damage than the rainbow gathering ever has I was in Washington there was minimal . Are you a Forest service bot? USDA bot?
That is because those are fakes, phonies and imposters. The real hippies started the gathering in the 60's when there was real love and psychedelic healing. Most of us new age hippies that are pure of heart don't even attend the gatherings because of the fact that they started allowing anyone to attend and even making separate camps for those beings. They just use it as an excuse to get all effed up and do what they want. They get their karma ultimately and those of us that are real, clean up their mess.
Lots of trampled vegetation. Some cars drove right over new plants. Leave No Trace practices would be very useful to mitigate damage to the forest, however small it may be. Take care of the forest, and it will take care of you ☺
No doubt some of it will spring back up. Didn't mean any disrespect, it just made me remember being repremanded by a scoutmaster for stepping on new growth as a teenager.
what a incredible experience, I love your video" the people were over the top cool. If there were a heaven, I'd wish it to be like that. thank you for sharing....
These events are much needed for like minded people to come together in peace at such a divisive time in society also all the music was so good! I was pleasantly surprised 😄
I was on the tail end of the wonderful grateful dead concerts, I was just a kid teenager, within a few years, the concert changed into a scary situation with law enforcement grabbing people and violently throwing them up against walls and stuff. Scary and mean. This guy got slammed into a wall suddenly right in front of me, at the Long Beach auditorium, it was terrifying. I walked past a big room where they had people handcuffed to chairs. But I saw such a community of sharing KIND people for the first few years. Let's evolve back to kindness.... ❤❤❤❤
1982, rainbow gathering was a nudist camp of a few thousand people. Unfortunately I only found out when I got there. I traveled from Canada through United States down to the bottom of Mexico mostly by bus and hitchhiking by myself. It was completely different than. About 2 months before the Gathering people arrived to scout out the area and plan everything ahead of time. I didn't have hightech equipment just a backpack, two-person tent sleeping bag in a few extras. It sure has changed.
This has me really looking forward to this years season of gatherings. Still don’t know if our main spots in WNC are even still there though. We will adapt and persevere.
Mike, I love this part of your life. I had been watching GIV for years. I love your channel and am a local SoCal girl. My dad was stationed in Germany during the war and he loved it. He sang songs in German to me and spoke a fair amount of German. My Aunt is from Germany. What a lovely woman sooo! love your Germany content and the River Rheine and a look at what ppl do along the river. The food looked good and your mom is just sooo awesome. Have a great time. Happy you received your luggage! That certainly helps!❤
I went to one of these in 2005. It was in the Ocala National Forest. We drove in, parked and walked about 50 yards to the tents. There was no 3 hour hike. There were porta johns. Sucks though that they caused a problem at the original site. I still have the blanket that I bought at the event. They ask that you take a bag of garbage or two out if you have a pick up truck.
Don't think that was a real rainbow gathering, certainly not a national. Does Florida have regionals? Never heard of porta potties at a gathering and definitely no selling of anything in National forest.
I went to one of their gatherings in my area in the MO Ozark’s I had a good time. Though they were ask not to ever come back. There was some thieving around the area stores. It was advertised to the stores to be aware. It was funny it was protroled by the local police on horses. And there was a secret call out all the way in when the horses was coming. 😅 I figure like any large event there was a mess left behind. And a lot of the rainbowers were not as clean as this video is showing. 😢 It was interesting and a friend and I did have a good time.

How did that praying for peace work out?
"dancing in tbe nude" 😅@@auntymarushkafah
Absolutely amazing …. I wants to come 🎉🎉🎉 love that vibe … if only everyone could live this simple community life ALWAYS !! Thx Star 🌟 D x
😂.ssi not a nest egg.. its poor ppl...

I enjoyed this video so much I can’t even tell you. I could go into specifics, about moments and different topics, etc. But I think I’ll just keep it at that. I enjoyed this video tremendously. Thanks for sharing, Star.
Omg it was so nice to see Will and meet Liam! Always lovely to see Hadley and your mom!
Your editing in this video needs to be recognized as something of an accomplishment for sure.. this is probably the best first person video of a Rajnbow Gathering perspective out here on the interwebs.. the time you spent to do this really shows! ⭐️
I have a strong feeling you're going to meet 'your person' at one of these rainbow events 😊
I had a feeling of that also.
I hope not
Glad you filmed this very interesting video this is the first time I’ve ever heard of the rainbow gathering ❤ wow 50 years amazing would love to visit one day
They came to our small town and lake in the seventies.
Did you take pictures, or copy Police reports?
Star, I absolutely LOVED this vlog. It’s my favorite one. I never feel like I fit in anywhere. I’m a total misfit and this was so comforting. Thank you so much for sharing.
Misfits are welcome at Rainbow; As long as they are peaceful.
Hope everyone created good healing energy to the nature in which you laid your head.💚💙💜🧡❤🌲🌲
I loved this video. I would really enjoy something like that because it looks so chill & the vibe appears to be one of community & love. Thank you for sharing.🏕🌳🌻🪷🍁✌️💖💫🌞🏞
So beautiful, this made me cry, I wanna go there right now
this was a good vlog!! I enjoyed seeing your family and all the other people there with open hearts and minds. Just being in the moment not "desiring " anything. I really like how he said that. ❤
I send all my positive vibrations to the Rainbow🌈 Gathering 2024 in Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), Uslar - Dinkelhausen!
You are doing it right and are on the path to realization! 🔥 ☯ ☮
I’m glad hippies are still around, I used to go to Grateful Dead concerts and it was a different world, I want to experience this Rainbow gathering sometime but I live in the Midwest Illinois Sucks state.
Better than Indiana?
@TheEriccurtis ah, I went to one in Illinois in the late 90’s. Beautiful and I spent weeks there! Perhaps you could enjoy a regional there :)
This was fun. Thank you for sharing a taste of Rainbow. I have never been but have wanted to go. I have been nervous becasue of the strong LEO presence. Maybe I will get there someday...
Ask around about the Dorset National Forest area one located off route 7 in DANBY,Vermont? The cops were there overtime!
I was there. I give the Rainbow Council all the credit in the world, they took a difficult situation and made it work! Rainbow forever!
I just started the video but I gotta say I can love it already
hello from indonesia ( central java island ). It is totally different then here. Omg i really enjoyed awhole video duration. people so wellcome and omg people like dont give judgement with another. and top off all that the vibes duh... 🎉🎉🎉
I loved this so much. I wish I was raised in a community like this. Maybe my next life. Peace and love, darling
What a cool experience, thank you for sharing it with us Star 💖
I went to one of the rainbow gatherings about 40 years ago. I’m surprised to see how much more clothing was worn at this recent one. It would be nice to experience it again as an adult with my husband.
I really enjoyed this video and your commentary. Keep it up!!!
Amazing¡!¡!!! Welcome home Star❤
I’m not one for camping, but this event looks INCREDIBLE ❤ I’d love to take part in it one day. Thanks for sharing it with us, Star!
❤
I love this.
As a hobo, I always carry a spork.
I can appreciate the vibe & meaning of the gathering. As an old Deadhead I think I may have to attend one.
Be nice to get back to my bohemian roots.
Star 🌟 ❤!! This was amazing!!! I seriously felt like I was there and got sucked in completely. You are a talented cinematographer, specially with vlogs which is a form of documentary. I’m from north cali as well, maybe I’ll join next time 🌈 ✨🫶🏻
In 1969 my local park allowed a love in.
Truly a incredible video. What a great a experience ❤
I spent a few days in the white mountains in AZ. Back in 1979 at a rainbow family gathering. Cool times, great memories. Yet a little different experience than what's in this video. Things have definitely changed. ✌

Thank you family! 🫶🏽

Right on one of the best pro RB this sister is being real. Not a USDA bot. Great video about the gathering.😊
Did they have to dose any creepers this year?
What fairy tale world do you live in where everyone is just like you? Wake up! There are people with addiction, mental illness which could be anything from bi polar disorder to depression and beings that have real pain whether it be mentally or physically. Some people absolutely need psychedelics, which is a far healthier substitute from prescription pills, drugs and alcohol. If you ratio a psychedelic of your choosing properly, it becomes a medicine and it can heal mind soul body, celestial spirit in one. We are all individuals. We are all different. Open up your third eye and stop putting your narrow minded judgement on others.
@@Tater-Skinz sounds like your problem.
They came to Central Oregon and destroyed everything, made the lake unsafe to keep fish, stole shit outta the stores. Obviously not all of them are bad, but holy shit they did some damage.
How did they make the lake unsafe for fishing?
@@outdoorloser4340 By shitting/bathing in it, littering everywhere. Look up Walton Lake, it's pretty small, with the amount of them, it took a long time to fix it. It's basically a big pond.
Yup. Same in NH. Not impressed.
I've been to three and my experience was completely different. Yes, there is that element but most of the locals exaggerate the troubles. My first was in central Arizona and I was there for the set up, event, and clean up. You could not tell there had been 35,000 attendees there. I was amazed at the organization.
Yes, and they've been doing it for fifty+ years. I experienced them coming to our small town in the seventies. Sos, back then
I was so haapy as i followed the reselant rainbow news that instead of walking away. I'm sure the response task force had thought they had achived cancelation. Silly permit obssesions made them forget Rainbow's thrive in adaptation and reflect love even wtih those determined to destroy us. good video thank you
Ah yes, love rainbow! Here's to Grey Eagle who photographed many gatherings.

I did 1995,96, & 97 Nationals. Best years of my life in so many ways. In fact today I was in the gym sauna & randomly two other people were at the 96 Missouri gathering. Great memories. I have little desire to go to one nowdays. I'll cherish the memories of some days long past.
Missouri was beautiful with the fireflies, little streams, easy soft trails (Lots of tea lights) and not so spread out. Met some life long friends there when we shared our basket of produce from our garden in Texas. Love n peace
THE RAINBOW FAMILY OF LIVING LIGHT. Beautiful ppl. I went to the gathering from 87 to 93. Ran a kitchen. I love you family- Shaggy

thats is my Bday also.! I am about double your age though although I don't act like it. hahaha I really want to attend one of these sometime..!!!
I knew someone who was a rainbow tribe member in 81. She was a total free spirit she lived in a community in Missouri.
The Tennessee Gathering was a lot of rain, but it made for nice trails. Triangle means LSD.
This is next level :D sending love from Amsterdam!
I love being a hippie and seeing my fellow hippies being at peace❤❤ God blessssss🌈

Ah this felt like a documentry Star! 💫 loved this ❤
It looks like a great event, But the times it has been in NE Washington they have left huge mess behind.
Take care of the forest, and it will take care of you ☺
Absolutely some of us are the original environmentalist of recovery for us from natural disasters… We always leave it better than we came…
No doubt some of it will spring back up. Didn't mean any disrespect, it just made me remember being repremanded by a scoutmaster for stepping on new growth as a teenager.
A year later, you won't be able to detect our presence.
Probably because other people will go clean the area up after the unemployed hippies left.
It's amazing how youthful you became @ 33:28. Like 10 years without that in word. The best for you in your journey!
what a incredible experience, I love your video" the people were over the top cool.
If there were a heaven, I'd wish it to be like that.
thank you for sharing....
I have got to go next year. Peace, love, happiness to all. Love you family❤
In guessing this tour was early 90s?

1982, rainbow gathering was a nudist camp of a few thousand people. Unfortunately I only found out when I got there. I traveled from Canada through United States down to the bottom of Mexico mostly by bus and hitchhiking by myself. It was completely different than. About 2 months before the Gathering people arrived to scout out the area and plan everything ahead of time. I didn't have hightech equipment just a backpack, two-person tent sleeping bag in a few extras. It sure has changed.
was at this one, also my first gathering. I think we have to go to next year's one to get the full experience 😅
This has me really looking forward to this years season of gatherings. Still don’t know if our main spots in WNC are even still there though. We will adapt and persevere.

Love this blog, the Rainbow community, and your calming voiceover 🧡🌈
Hilarious!😂
