Advantage of the side hook set is if the fish misses you are not necessarily moving it completely out of the strike zone. However if watch the motion it’s more like a low angle - to the side but slightly up. Since most inshore fish are in shallow water lifting straight up doesn’t do much, it just pops the lure out of the water on a miss. Plus the fish is going to run in a horizontal direction, so you want to counter that as much as possible. Downside? Well you might pull the lure out of the corner of their mouth. Still that sweeping motion is more natural then a straight up jerk and less chance of smacking yourself in the head with the rod on a whiff.
Great info and I love it any time Otis is in a video! Question: the first thing you said was to keep the rod tip down; how would you modify this retrieve for a kayak (if you’re not standing in it)?

After testing out a ton of colors over the years, I've settled on Slam Shady for being the most productive of them all in most situations, so that's all I use for when fishing paddletails now. You can get a free pack by going to www.slamshady.com.

Can't stand paddle tails, probably the most boring lure to use. The only use I've found for them is slow trolling the edge of the flat while having lunch. Flukes spook fish less when sight fishing in skinny water and are more fun to work.
I completely agree that flukes can catch more and bigger fish when fishing skinny water (especially if it's clear). Here's a post about that: www.saltstrong.com/articles/best-redfish-lure-shallow-water/

Otis reminds me of Dixie, my old fishing buddy, now long gone. She would jump in the boat at the sightest hint of getting ready, and bark at hookups.

Thanks for making time to leave the helpful comment John!
Great video and tip about the hook setting. Normally I would set straight up but I'll give the side hook set a try.
Glad to see that you enjoyed this video!
You need a video all about Otis and his behavior and bloopers!!!!!

Gotta try the hookset. Makes sense when you hear it explained, thanks!
I hope you find that it works great too!
Hopping the slam shady fish will usually hit it on the drop the fish will tell you how active they are pay attention on how the fish takes the bait
What a good dog
Who makes the bow platform on the boat? I'm looking for one similar. Thx

Thanks! When kayak fishing, I just hold my rod over to the side so that the tip stays close to the surface of the water.
Salt Strong got it, thanks...I mean now I feel stupid because that’s a pretty obvious answer 😆 mayyyyybe I was overthinking a bit
Great tips always from you guys!!!
Thx for sharing your knowledge with us!!!

Thanks Ron!
can you make a vidio on how to tie the uni/blood knot?
Here's a popular video on the Uni knot (our favorite of the two): www.saltstrong.com/articles/uni-knot/
Are you still able to get a free pack because I’m gonna get one if they are still available.
What type of knot do you like to use for a paddletail set up like this? Thanks!
They use the non slip loop knot and they have it on their channel, type it in the youtube bar

Very nice, how do you choose color?
They only use one color. The slam shaddy. They are giving out free ones. See link in description.
