They have no intention of leading a democratic nation but of crushing democracy and creating a dictatorship. Bad enough they are in the Dail at all with their pretence of politics. Just to remind you: Sinn Fein do not have a monopoly on Republicanism in its original sense, nor are they the last bastion of it. They do not, and will never, speak for me. They also do not have a monopoly on speaking for the underdog or for the workers. They just use them as a means to an end. Until they admit everything, all they have killed or tortured, all they have done wrong, they can never be trusted. Ever. Their arrogance knows no bounds. As one of the many, many thousands who had to leave Ireland in the eighties it's heartbreaking to hear how these immoral vultures ran our country into the ground and the level of contempt they had for anyone outside their golden circle. The hundreds of millions that was paid to solicitors during the lengthy tribunal that followed led to a few resignations and no legal action whatsoever and will forever be remembered to be just as shameful and as diabolical as what went on before it.

    Tom Gilmartin should not have entertained these politicians, even if he stood to lose out on a lucrative deal. A man of principle would have walked away. As for the politicians in question, weren`t they all given pardons afterwards. Speaking of which there was some guy recently who was given a posthumous pardon eighty odd years after he was hung. Seems to me all these pardons can only mean one thing, the Irish judiciary is not fit for purpose. Why else would they be making so many mistakes. The tribunal Gilmartin was involved in cost 200 mil and following all the pardons it was just a lot of hot air. The lesson here is that Ireland is just as corrupt now as it was then.

      Pol This is victim-blaming (you wouldn't be a Fianna Fáil stooge, would you?). He was being subjected to extortion. Would you blame the Sicilian shopkeeper who is told he must pay over 'security money' or they won't be able to 'prevent' his shop being burned down? The man was clearly utterly honourable - he went to the Gardái and and no-one would help him. When you are put in the same position, and set to lose everything by 'walking away' then you can throw stones. Until then, you're a hurler on the ditch.

    This is a very important conversation. About a society - changing event. One thing that’s for certain, is that this good family took a lot of the weaponry out of the hands of the corrupt all over the world with their raw courage and spirit. They never did receive proper justice, and too many criminals got away. But Ireland is not the same. Corruption still abounds in the rest of the world as well, but at least people know to look for it because of his efforts. This family set out to improve economic prospects for the Irish, and really he did.
    This family believes the adage that all it takes for evil to prevail, is for good people to do nothing; and the proof of that is in their legacy and the Irish economy. They set the example of love and compassion in doing so much to lift their fellow-countrymen out of abject, desperate poverty.

      You should read Frank Connelly's book. Its very good. Gilmartin did'nt need Lawlor, but Lawlor got wind that Gilmartin was asking questions about developments and pushed his way in and immediately demanded money. When Gilmartin refused, Lawlor and George Redmond made life impossible for him. This whole episode in Irish history is an absolute embarrassment.

    Ethical bribes might be getting replaced or supplemented by Stakes , Legal corporate bribes , Maybe these were the good times, compare what happens in some countries with dictatorships and places being drained of oil while the locals live in poverty and fear. Was this just that politicians wanted their share for giving planning permission or giving out a contract to a developer, maybe its just business in way so long as you don't get caught. Ethical bribe means you don't sell out your country or do anything that might harm others

    hmmm, youtube seems to have removed the 'reply' otption.
    Emily, I may have worded that poorly, as you seem to think I was attacking the Gilmartins. In fact I was attacking the rotten to the core FF party, so I'm sorry if you think I was trying to libel the innocent party in this.
    Yes it was a donation, but essentially FF made him believe he had to make a large 'donation' to avoid deliberate political obstructions to his project.
    When I asked why were the revenue commissioners not looking into this, I meant in the sense - as you say below of intended party funds being in effect stolen by Flynn for his own personal use.
    So again, why did Revenue never pursue him on this?? They were/are afraid to investigate a former EU kleptocrat?

    • @EmilyGilmartin117
      @EmilyGilmartin117 10 лет назад +12

      I see what you meant now. I did take it the wrong way, as it has been a common accusation made by people who don't bother with the specifics of the true story. No hard feelings I hope. You are right, of course, in asking why nothing was done about Flynn's robbery and I can only reply to that by asking why they have done nothing about ANY of the crimes in this sordid story. As Thomas says in the interview, it is shocking that politicians in Ireland go unpunished. Ahern is still flying high with his properties in Europe of course and Owen O'Callahan is still seeking to make himself King of Cork and the people let him. Memories are short.
