- The Kells Set Dancers perform on ‘The Mountain Lark’.
The Kells Set Dancers, the well known dancing group from County Meath dance a set for ‘The Mountain Lark’ viewers to the music of The Johnny Higgins Céilí Band from Oldcastle.
These Oireachtas champions have also danced for audiences in Britain, the United States and Canada as part of a Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann tour.
‘The Mountain Lark’ is a series featuring traditional music and song filmed at the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann headquarters in Monkstown, County Dublin. The series aims to showcase the best of traditional Irish music, song and dance from around the country. First broadcast on 29 April 1985 it ran for four series.
This episode of ‘The Mountain Lark’ was broadcast on 25 February 1986. The presenter is Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaoich.

The older man here is my great uncle Johnny - a kind, warm-hearted and exceptionally witty man. He stayed with us in NY when he was on tour and we with him at the family farm in Cormeen, Meath when we visited. On one stay when I was 5-years-old, I was stamping my feet in the morning chill while the stove lit up and he thought I was trying to take up dancing.

Those very fine dancers put me and all my dancing friends at the Bolshoi Ballet to shame with their timing, we have something to learn for those damners, Just you with when i show my friends this video, they will not believe their eyes.

I actually haven't seen people do this live since the early 80's here. Used to see a lot of what we call square dances here. Competition and open dancing. Styles like this, and others. If I remember correctly. Some of the Dutch side of my Mother's family used to compete in Wooden Shoes. That's a memory from over 40 years ago so... I just remember a cousin wearing wooden shoes and she had just come back from a square dance. I grew up with them. Sorry I'm so ignorant of my Irish side C.R.
We've lost a lot of this here. I believe it is the need of our powers that be for years to enforce "just one pogo stick" and then they get offended because too many people use their pogo stick. For just one pogo stick. Which why I don't know much about my Father's side of the family. My maternal Grandmother feared more than one pogo stick. She was Lutheran, but just a very nervous individual really. My Dad's side were Wesleyan, and my Grandfather on my Mother's side was Baptist. I am actually quite the mash up of Protestantism. So I see the full body of Christ quite clear, as opposed to the more Collectivist type of people. But my Grandmother was like that, and I do still love many of my other memories about her. Christ forgave her I'm sure. But she had that problem. Jesus Christ was broken for us. Never forget that. 2am here. Felt sick after work. Laid down about 5. Woke up at 2am. It must be about 6am there.
