Man if you like this you should try the SN30 Pro 2. It’s this controller combined with modern ergonomics. Still get that retro feel but can use it with modern games too.
ooh Same here! If I'm using the sticks, I go back and forth on preferring the sn30 pro2 or the proController on my switch. For a D-pad, the sn30pro2 is hands down the better choice. I did just pick up the 8bitdo lite (no sticks) for nintendo switch online games and it is GREAT for Tetris and Mario 3.
Sadly my SN30 Pro +'s rechargeable batteries decided to die on me. Ended up having to buy those rechargeable AA batteries which is still and actually an okay replacement. Been using it for more than 2 years now with modified joysticks since the old one melted out due to sweat I guess. Edit: I think I have the non-2 version. Maybe they upgraded the batteries on the newer ones?
Patrick, if you don't mind it, you can use the SN30 wired too, I do with my switch. No charging to worry about and seems to have less latency, not that there was much to begin with but less accidental hiccups from Bluetooth. I removed the rechargeable battery pack from both of mine, makes them lighter for longer sessions that way too.
Can confirm. These controllers are great! Got a Joker combo, I.E. a purple and a green SN30 Pro (I'm a sucker for any colorful translucent gaming gear), and they work great with my Retrobat hard drive, and now my Retropie. Played hours of Sega Genesis Starflight and loved every minute of it...
It is an excellent controller. One thing worth mentioning is that it is one of the few controllers that Analogue guarantees to work with the Pocket Dock, and it works very well for that purpose. It also packs flat and is easier to transport in smaller bags. If you stack them inverted on top of each other, they can protect each other while taking up about the same space as an Xbox One controller or similar. It works fairly well with the Steam Deck as well, but it does require some fiddling with it because it can accept so many types of input. If you enable the A-B swap, it will automatically reconfigure most controls to the printed layout on the controller. If not, you can always move things around using Steams excellent controller interface. Anyways, that's enough obscure details. Nice review. I hope this helps someone. Also, get well soon TD.
I’ve had one of these babies for about 3 years now and its my go to for literally everything when i need it. Feels amazing for mario wonder right now too 😊
I just picked one of these up a couple days ago! I've had the 8bitdo Pro 2 for a while, and absolutely love them, but I feel like the SN30 just fits with these retro games. Really scratches that nostalgia itch for me.
I decided to get the Pro 2 for the Switch/PC and the SN30 for emulation. Just feels right to have the joysticks with the ergonomics and then the classic feel for the older games.
My first console was the SNES and I've always gone back to it somehow. I've used this controller for a couple years now and it brought so much extra joy while playing the new Ninja Turtles Game and other new retro-style beat 'em ups. Cool to see you review it!
Hopefully 8Bitdo will release a 2.4g version of this controller with minimal latency, since the blue tooth version has just a bit too much Looks like I'll have to settle for the Wired USB SN30 Pro(GameBoy version) instead for the time being. 8Bitdo has such a confusing and weird mix matching line of controllers. They also have the SN30 2.4g wireless snes controller, which would of been perfect, but it only works with the original SNES and not Switch. Won't even bother with what Retro-Bit has. their controllers are usually second rate, with the exception of their 6 button genesis clone controller which is an easy 10/10.
I love the look and feel of this controller but was completely let down by the D-Pad, which erroneously inserts up or down inputs into my left and right inputs if pressed even slightly off-centre, particularly when switching between them quickly. This was such a common issue for this model that there are several guides on how to internally mod it (with tape or page protector circle stickers) to correct these false inputs. I eventually resorted to the mod, which was mostly successful in correcting the inputs, with the expense that pressing the DPad is quite a lot more firm than it was originally. Resultingly, this controller only tends to get used when I travel and want something small but full-featured to pack away. To be honest, I find the DPad on the Xbox Series Controller to be a lot better, even though it's not a "classic" style controller. I now use an actual OG SNES controller connected to a low-latency daemonbite adapter for classic style input... it's not wireless, but it's hard to beat the originals. Or, if I really want wireless, I reach for the 8bitDo M30 2.4ghz model - this is more a Saturn clone type of controller, and having 6 buttons feels a bit a strange for SNES type games, but otherwise has performed faultlessly and with very low latency for me.
I love this controller. It's my go-to for Super Mario Bros Wonder and the Live A Live remake. Got the 8bitdo Neo Geo CD pad recently too which is amazing. They make good stuff.
I have the older SN30 Pro that looks just like the SNES controllers, and it's a shame they still don't offer that version as well. I'm guessing because they got sued since I can't find the SFC version either. I should have bought more of them when they still had them for sale. Regardless, it's excellent. I might even say the sticks are better than the official Switch Pro controller, and obviously... the D-Pad is perfect.
I'm glad I got one with the SNES colors before they stopped making those, I love it. Also have a pro 2 for more modern stuff and I think it's more comfortable for longer sessions
I love this controller i have 3 in the snes color scheme and 2 in the super famicom color scheme and they're great, I also have the non pros for when i don't want the analog sticks, great vid!
I have one of those and your take is spot on as far as what I use it for. It's my go to retro gaming stick. However, my special lady friend has seized it as her own. Good thing she leaves every so often. I'm glad you're feeling better, buddy.
They recently released a zinc-alloy version of this controller in silver or gold. The silver one is electroplated, while the gold has a matte paint finish.
Your comment unfortunately made me envision this guy talking into the mic with a *_smug-full-of-himself_* face with a half open mouth during speech gaps; and an irritating index finger of one of his hands held up to one of the sides of his face....
I myself am a fan of retro videogames, so I bought an 8Bitdo SN30 Pro+ gamepad controller 4 years ago, and I have not regretted the purchase. I also like the D-Pad, the two analog sticks and the two pairs of trigger buttons on this retro-style controller. 😃 I've played through a bunch of Sonic rom hacks and an indie game (Ori and the Will of the Wisps), it was great to play with that controller. 😊 I am planning to buy a wired version of the newer variant called SN30 Pro 2. 🙂
Hey buddy!! Just making sure this controller isn't too awkward with the N64's Z/C buttons and the GameCube controllers layout. I have the 8BIT Minis but this will be new to my collection.
I bought two of these years ago when the were not the Pro. Came with some keychains and nice packaging. I charge them once a year, lol. Great controllers. I need to fire up the Pi tonight and get some nostalgia going!
I have tried many bluetooth controllers over the years but 2 years ago i bought myself this very 8bitdo controller and it has since become my go to controller for emulation...
This is my go-to controller for portable gaming OR specifically retro gaming. This is my mario kart controller, my super mario world controller, my tetris controller, and I even use it paired with my phone for streaming my PC games.
I like the old ones they don't sell anymore with the slanted Start and Select buttons and has the original SNES colors. The analog stick version I can do without, though. But I do have one of those as well.
Google has a search song feature too like shazam. It actually gave a really funny result. As the intro to a brazillian rap song 😂 . Guess techdweeb will have to answer this one.
Easily, the SN30 Pro is my favorite controller at the moment, too. I dare not dream of the SN30 Pro +. If you get a chance, review the 8BitDo M30. Perfect for Sega Saturn and Genesis emulation. Works well, with SNES and GBA, as well.
I’ve been wanting a controller for my RUclips studio setup for a while, I just have a tiny one. I wonder if this is the one for me. Also, I am soooo sad we didn’t get a sexy Tina Turner episode.
It will work on any device that accepts bluetooth controllers. I believe the 1up machines are android based, so you'll need to switch to android mode on the controller.
On the go controller, this one is unbeatable. For Xbox replacement, the SN30Pro plus or one of the Ultimate controllers from 8bitdo too. For me, the SN30Pro + is all that I need.
What do you do if you don't have a laptop to set up the controller with? All I have is a cell phone and a tablet and the controller doesn't work for the apps on my phone or the tablet.. It connects to the Bluetooth on both of the devices but it doesn't work and I can't get the firmware update on it because I don't have a laptop.. Please help me if you can. Thank you for the support
I used to have the 8bitdo FC30 Pro, which is basically the same controller but in the gorgeous red and gold color scheme of the original Famicom controller. I don't think 8bitdo does any controller in this look anymore, even though I think it was their most aesthetically pleasing ever. I was heartbroken when the micro USB port on mine broke, rendering it unusable.
This form factor actually makes for a compelling "portable/handheld" experience if used with a phone. I remember when 5-inch phones were apparently too large in the early-mid 2010s and at that time a lot of joypad makers got one of those small-sized joypads that included compact phone holders and generally had the base arrangement of buttons (Samsung Gamepad, anyone?) Now that Android handheld consoles are a thing, I'm a bit surprised that people who don't use these only recommend one of those bulky regular console joypads when smaller (But not tiny like the Zero/Micro/Lite) pads can actually fit with the phone itself in a small pouch. I had the N30 Pro back in 2017 (When the Switch support was just rolling out) Of course the D-pad was an infamous issue but it otherwise was comfortable to hold.
I'm mixed on the sticks. Symmetrical sticks are a no go for me. It isn't a preference. Controllers like the Dual sense cause a great deal of physical pain even in short play sessions. However with retro games, I don't want the dpad to be in the lower left. However HOWEVER, there are a lot of retro game platforms where a stick in required (Dream cast, game cube, ps2). For me, and I stress for me, any controller that tries to do everything retro will fail. There is going to be an unacceptable compromise. This controller is a nice effort, but I'm sticking (no pun intended) to using multiple controllers for different uses.
Battery was great in the beginning but will only last for around 2 years. When I open it up, the battery ballooned up. And I got replacement battery on AliExpress, not a perfect fit but it works. The fix requires soldering. Got one of the old Super Famicon color version which they no longer make. The right R bumper button, the rubber membrane tore. So I no longer get a click. Still works but not the same as the L button.
Got the SF30 Pro ages ago, and it's one of my favourite controllers of all time. That said, the lag with my Thinkpadd is noticeably, so much so that I needed to plug it in to properly play Hollow Knight. Maybe they've improved it on the later models, who knows. Honestly, I'll probably pick up the transparent green one anyway, because it's transparent green.
Love your videos TechDweeb, very funny. I was wondering how the chromecast 4K would fare in regards to retro gaming. Do you have any plans to make a video regarding this ?
Hey TechDweeb. Thank you for this review. I've been looking for this kind of controller for my Odin 2 to carry it with in my travel bag and I would like to ask you can you propose some good substances from the market that I could consider before buying 8bitdo? Greetings from Poland. Cheers!
I love mine.. I got the one without the thumbsticks and only the 2 shoulder buttons... but there is just some games for the NES were you want the buttons side by side... Blaster Master being one of them... ive yet to use a different layout that also worked for these types of games. Remapping B & A to Y & B helps, but its just not the same. Am I alone on this?
I own several 8BitDo controllers as I've found them to be the most reliable and most comfortable in the hands. Fits better in the pocket too. Only thing missing is analog control on the triggers but to be honest, when I'm playing racing games like Mario Kart or Forza, I'm putting the pedal to the metal anyway trying to reach 1st place! Never have I needed to drive at 10% speed in those type of games.
I got the European snes edition (SF30 Pro) And I love it, great for portability and extremely useful (I use it on PC and in my phone) 8Bitdo has improved a lot during the years
pretty late for a review of this device, but its absolutely worth it... i got the Sn30 Pro aswell and i love it... for what i do (playing retro games on a tablet when i travel) its aboslutely perfect... there is nothing i could wish to improve or so...
Bummer. I have no issues connecting on two of my PCs but my laptop always forgot the connection, and I assumed that had to do with the Bluetooth on my laptop rather than the controller.
Im still looking for a controller wich the R2 and L2 position are in the way lower back end, where your middle finger naturaly position when holding a controller. That would be perfect and make life so much easier
I bought 2 of the transparent green versions of this controller for my 4TB hard drive you had a vid on a few months ago.. still haven't used them lol.. damn work..
It's an excellent controller. I ordered one of these and the NSO Snes controller at the same time, specifically since reddit and tiktok have a huge audience of anti-8bitdo commenters that keep saying 8bitdo controllers are junk. (Which I don't get - I own one of almost everything they'd ever made and it's all been quality hardware.) I'm still fascinated that people think the NSO controller is better. They got the dpad completely wrong and it doesn't feel like the original SNES pads at all. Meanwhile the 8bitdo, while not a perfect replica either, gets much closer and just feels better to use in the dpad department. Also the buttons feel better as well - The NSO pad is mushy and weird. They even both have equal levels of "accidental diagonals". The 8bitdo definitely wins for me.
Man if you like this you should try the SN30 Pro 2. It’s this controller combined with modern ergonomics. Still get that retro feel but can use it with modern games too.
Can confirm the Pro 2 is amazing. It is my main controller for Switch and Deck, modern and retro. Love it. You'd love it, TD!
ooh Same here! If I'm using the sticks, I go back and forth on preferring the sn30 pro2 or the proController on my switch. For a D-pad, the sn30pro2 is hands down the better choice. I do have an 8Bitdo Pro 2, but what is an SN30 Pro 2? I’ve searched high an low and cannot find it.

The dopamine drip of see-through electronics of the 90s contunues strong :)
This controller is great for retro games. There's something about that form factor in comparison to more modern designs.

@@DrGreenThumbNZL I find them both comfortable, but the Pro 2 is probably comfortable for longer and more intense sessions.
You know what I wish they made another of? The Steam Controller. It was a great PC oriented controller

They should release a controller based on the Deck design and call it the Steam Port.
I decided to get the Pro 2 for the Switch/PC and the SN30 for emulation. Just feels right to have the joysticks with the ergonomics and then the classic feel for the older games.
Any controller drift yet?

Got the SF30 Pro ages ago, and it's one of my favourite controllers of all time. That said, the lag with my Thinkpadd is noticeably, so much so that I needed to plug it in to properly play Hollow Knight. Maybe they've improved it on the later models, who knows. Honestly, I'll probably pick up the transparent green one anyway, because it's transparent green.
have you yet?
Love your videos TechDweeb, very funny.
I was wondering how the chromecast 4K would fare in regards to retro gaming.
Do you have any plans to make a video regarding this ?
Is it good for rg35xxh and batoceta?
Yup!
@@TechDweeb nice
can I connect this controller to my PS4 ?
Hey TechDweeb. Thank you for this review. I've been looking for this kind of controller for my Odin 2 to carry it with in my travel bag and I would like to ask you can you propose some good substances from the market that I could consider before buying 8bitdo?
Greetings from Poland. Cheers!
I just ordered two of these!
How’s the size compared to a iPhone 12 Pro Max?
I guess the slower speeds are for precise curves or something
@@Josuh I can see that but we've never used analog triggers in Mario Kart games and we've done just fine going around those tight curves.
I love the sn30pro i have grey and transparent green, i cant believe you didnt have one yet! I use it for ps2 roms the most
I got the European snes edition (SF30 Pro)
And I love it, great for portability and extremely useful (I use it on PC and in my phone)
8Bitdo has improved a lot during the years
pretty late for a review of this device, but its absolutely worth it... i got the Sn30 Pro aswell and i love it... for what i do (playing retro games on a tablet when i travel) its aboslutely perfect... there is nothing i could wish to improve or so...
Would this be a good controller for Game Cube emulator on android?
Hello, have you tried pairing it with RG35XX plus? Did it work? Thank you
I always have a problem connecting the Bluetooth on this thing. I wish it was a 2.4 connector.
I bought 2 of the transparent green versions of this controller for my 4TB hard drive you had a vid on a few months ago.. still haven't used them lol.. damn work..
Knowing nothing about this channel, the way he says “Mario” immediately tells me he’s from the east coast. “Mare-e-oh”
It's an excellent controller. I ordered one of these and the NSO Snes controller at the same time, specifically since reddit and tiktok have a huge audience of anti-8bitdo commenters that keep saying 8bitdo controllers are junk. (Which I don't get - I own one of almost everything they'd ever made and it's all been quality hardware.)
I'm still fascinated that people think the NSO controller is better.
Also my favorite gamepad. Good pick!
