its interesting that somehow the code behind lakitu is responsible for making the anti-grav sections and other sections where you drive on 45 degree or 90 degree angles not throw you off the course, I didn't think they would be intertwined
I can kinda see how they are, so you see how without Lakitu the anti-grav section is like you have to tilt your head all weird. I think with lakitus coding along with the camera alinement is connected, cause you can still drive on it vertically but the camera is all weird. U know what I’m trynna say?
It's probably a hit box around the track with spawn point and gravity direction. If you hit the edges, Lakitu brings you to the right location and rotates you to the right gravity. Remove the hit box and there's no Lakitu, but also the game doesn't know what direction that track section is supposed to face

@@BlueAizu_ you got a point, lakitu is like tape in the mariokart coding connecting the checkpoints with the anti-gravity system.
They should add this as an explore mode in the game. They could even hide coins in hard to reach spots and you can unlock vehicles after you collect them

@@themarioking7127 almost, tour's version is still more accurate to the Wii rather than 8dx as it added the ramp on the parking lot and made so the cars move again

I'd be interested in seeing what the NPCs do with this if they drive off the track. Do they freeze in place, still try to wander around somewhere thinking they can reach the end, or somehow magic themselves back onto the track?

@@jukebox_julia you get dragged and fly towards the nearest invisible checkpoint when you use bullet bill
probably freeze in place, in some of redfalcon's videos (like lava out-of-bounds, or making the map bigger) some computers just suddenly stop at certain areas for some reason
This could probably make as some insane modding inspiration. Imagine being able to drive off a track and explore a whole other world outside of it…

My guess is that Mario Kart 8 initially probably had a larger scope in mind, with explorable areas that connect tracks, but at some point in development they dropped the idea (perhaps the Wii U couldn't handle it, or they really felt they needed to get MK8 out faster to try and help the consoles sales). As a result, later tracks don't have that sort of robust OOB areas because they weren't necessary.

I was going to post this too. It would also be awesome if you could host rooms and choose between Aggressive Lakitu or Chill Lakitu (who only rescues you from obvious spots or when you go TOO far out of bounds... Like, you're leaving programmed collision zones kind of too far)
@@christinewheeler4934 The ghosts are online. And if you are playing single player, it’s kinda unfair because cpus can’t take paths you can. Also some people may dislike this change. The best case is to have this as a seperate single player mode, maybe called exploration. But how will you be saved from falling endlessly?

You know, you would think that after all these years, somebody would do this by now. It would even be cool if this can become part of a any% speed run category.
I saw a comment on the short that mentioned a "Prompt Lakitu" would be fun. If you get stuck, you could just call Lakitu, but you still get to explore and do sick shortcuts.
Imagine someone out there starts modding the existing tracks to add extra collision because of this lol.

The biggest disappointment me and my brother had with 8 deluxe is that you can't drive backwards and there is a time limit on everything.
DS didn't have these things, thus allowing for much more fun and creative ways to play the game other than just racing.
Same with wii
The upper levels of Wild Woods give me huge Frontier Village vibes, and I'd love to see that polished up and used as an explorable space in a full-fledged 3D Mario platformer.

This brings to mind the constant hours I spent in MK64 just driving around and exploring the tracks because I vouldn't place in the Grand Prix for shit lol
It makes sense that Lakitu can bend gravity by stopping part of the courses from working, considering he normally saves me from mushrooming of course if he couldn’t I would be flying to a different course 😂
I remember wishing I could do this kind of thing in mkds. even if the tracks weren't nearly as detailed.
I was also very disappointed to see they blocked out peach's castle in the mk8 royal raceway. that's like such a cool detail of the track, and it always made that track stand out in my mind.
You should remove all invisible walls and install a flying mod to actually explore all of the maps! It's gonna be so cool!
Interesting how you can gave more freedom by removing Lakitu from the game. Also Yoshi is by far the cutest and most adorable character ever! I love Yoshi so much and always choose him to play as in all games. 💚💚💚

The fact you could reach other parts of the track from forbidden areas makes for some ideas for the return on race tracks in Battle Mode to make them more explorable.

I think this video had the opposite effect on me as intended, I actually kinda feel like Lakitu's restrictiveness in this game was sort of justified now.
We should petition to have a Lakitu on break mode added for fun, making Lakitu intervene only when karts hit otherwise irreversible point of no return (bottomless pits) OR directly calling him.
It would disable some competitive play rewards, but open the door for messing around and having fun with friends.
