An absolute stone-cold classic metal album. Super melodic and spookily groovy, with superb drums throughout from Mikkey Dee. Fun reaction too. Cheers Kira.
This guy is 67 years old and sounds better than ever. I've met him several times, and his wife Livia, and did a Q&A session with him & Hank Shermann on the Mercyful Fate tour last year. Just a cool down to earth dude. He just released a new music video (Masquerade of Madness) and is going on tour again. Awesome reaction 🤘🤘and as the King would say, stay heavy.
Glad you enjoyed the album overall! Can't blame you for not being 100% into King's vocals, 'cause they're definitely an acquired taste. If you want to keep following the story, it continues in their subsequent albums.
Be sure to check out KD's next two albums "Them" (1988) and of course "Conspiracy" (1989), which continues the haunting horror story told on "Them". Also, 1990 "The Eye" is an awesome album (it actually just had its 33th anniversary just the day before). Abigail's story was actually continued with "Abigail II: The Revenge" -album in 2002
I love when you throw your head in something completly new for you. This is not an easy one for metal beginners. Mercyful fate/King diamond has both straight simple heavy metal aswell as pretty progressive metal and sometimes a litle of thrash or power metal. Always the best of musicians in the band, performing this sometimes complex music with high perfection, even live at consert. No matter the musical quality, there is not all that can take the "Kings" very different vocal type.
"A Mansion In The Darkness" is one of my top ten metal songs ever. Also, this album gets better with subsequent listens. Don't wait for next Halloween to revisit it. "Them" is another excellent concept album by the King.
1 of many MANY great concept albums by King Diamond. Keeping the theme of concept albums might I recommend Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime & WASP - The Crimson Idol.
"Why would you do that? Why would you mummify it? People be so stupid in horror."🤣 I think you got thrown off a little by the dual timeline. Jonathan inherited the mansion and was stopped and warned by the horsemen that it was cursed but he went ahead anyway. This is in 1845. The ghost of his ancestor tells him the story of what happened in 1777 before the spirit of Abigail possesses his wife and history somewhat repeats itself.
All of King Diamond’s albums are great for Halloween. Fatal Portrait is a ghost story once it gets lined up. There’s literally a song called Halloween on it. You just experienced Abigail. Them and Conspiracy are a part 1 and 2 of an epic ghost story and I highly recommend both. The Eye revolves around the French Inquisition and actually involves historical figures and events set in a fictional story. The Spider’s Lullabye needs no introduction as a Halloween story. The Graveyard is thematically probably the least Halloween album as it centers around child molestation and what should be done to those involved. Voodoo, yep that one’s epic. House of God is my favorite of all the albums, has werewolves and tons of other lore wrapped up in a love story, sort of. Abigail 2 follows up Abigail (decently, like nearly every sequel it doesn’t come close to the original.). The Puppet Master is a great one that ends with a Christmas song. And Give Me Your Soul, Please is my least favorite album BUT is still damn good.
Michael Denner and Andy LaRoque aka Anders Allhage on guitars. Denner left after the recording and was replaced by Mike Moon aka Michael Myllynen (1987) for the tour and later Pete Blakk aka Peter Jacobsson who recorded Them, Conspiracy and The Eye. Timi Hansen on bass RIP and drummer Mikkey Dee aka Micael Delaoglou
i used to listen to this album with my buddy when we were 14/15 late at night staring at the moon and smoking joints together... we would belt out all the high pitched parts together! what an amazing album... mercyful fate is great stuff too :)
Love this album. I was 17 when it came out. Met Kim Petersen (King) multiple times over the years as well, he's a very cool person. Just fyi - King Diamond's first solo album, Fatal Portrait, is his first "concept album". All of his solo albums are. Even his earlier Mercyful Fate albums followed basic storytelling formula, although they aren't considered "concept albums".

It took me a bit when I was younger to get into King Diamond, but I'm glad I did eventually. This album is a classic for sure. If you are liking the concept albums, you've got to check out "Operation: Mindcrime" by Queensryche (released 1988). It's not the heaviest of metal, but even when I was a thrash lovin' teen it cut through my prejudices because it's just that good. I also have to mention the duology of "Apex" and "Abyss" by Canadian power metal band Unleash the Archers, despite that they are much more recent and I know you're not really doing that. One single Mercyful Fate song, “The oath” frightened me more than this album in its entirety. Mercyful Fate are even more raw and brutal with exploring and manifesting darkness. Please don't give up on King Diamond, check out Melissa and Don't Break the Oath. (plus Metallica's Mercyful Fate medley is probably the best thing Metallica did during the mid-90's)

I had never seen King Diamond live before, so when they started their set and he came out from the smoke and started singing, my mind was blown! He has a killer band behind him. 🤘
Abigail 2 the revenge is the sequel album you need to listen to. All of king diamond's albums are masterpieces. Particularly the 2 part album "Them" and the sequel "conspiracy".
Streaming companies should produce films or series with King Diamond's stories. He is one of the best horror writers of our era. Much better than anything like it, like Late Night With The Devil.
King Diamond originally rose to fame in the early 80's as the vocalist of controversial Danish metallers Mercyful Fate ... They had themes of horror, ghosts and satanism ... and they became popular by 1984. However, a creative conflict disbanded Mercyful Fate in 1985. Rather than continue Mercyful Fate's musical path, King Diamond decided to launch a solo band w/ a new direction... In 1986, King Diamond's solo band consisted of 3 ex-members of Mercyful Fate (himself, guitarist Michael Denner, and bassist Timi Hansen) w/ new guitarist Andy LaRocque and drummer Mikkey Dee (who would later join Motorhead... and now Scorpions). The 1st Kind Diamond album was 'Fatal Portrait' in 1986 - it had a story depicted in a few songs... With 'Abigail' in 1987, King Diamond decided to write an entire horror story depicted through the whole record. The concept of the story was 'revenge of the unborn'... In 1777, Count La'Fay discovers his wife's pregnancy was conceived from an extramarital affair... He murders his wife and the baby is stillborn. He had picked the name 'Abigail' for the baby girl... and when she was stillborn, he believed she was a cursed child... He asked the Black Horsemen to perform a gruesome ritual on the dead fetus to keep her from returning from the undead. In the 1800's, a new heir Jonathan La'Fey and his new wife Miriam are moving into Count La'Fey's old mansion, and are greeted by the Black Horsemen who warn them away... but Jonathan refuses to heed their warning... Once settled in the mansion, Jonathan gets a visit from Count La'Fey's ghost who warns him that 'Abigail' is attempting to return after revealing the events of 1777 ... Things go bad really fast and Miriam discovers she is pregnant and more haunting things occur as she progresses... At one point, Miriam is possessed and it is no longer his wife talking to Jonathan, but Abigail... Jonathan is horrified but unsure what to do. Miriam breaks free from Abigail briefly and begs Jonathan to kill her... But unlike his predecessor Count La'Fey, Jonathan is unable to kill his wife. Abigail uses that hesitation to do what Count La'Fey did to his wife - she pushes him off the stairs and breaks his back... The Black Horsemen arrive at the mansion to discover Miriam is dead and there is a baby girl feeding on her corpse... The album ends w/ them taking the baby away to prepare for another gruesome ritual. There is a sequel album 'Abigail II: The Revenge'... We discover that Jonathan La'Fey did not die, but was paralyzed from the waist down and left in a wheelchair, pining for his late wife Miriam.
@@FuckRUclipsAndGoogle Yes, you are right, Abigail II is not a good album in the dimension of KD (after The Eye album, everything is in a strange sterile sound and production with a very pathetic and epigonal cliché and the same procedures of building compositions, etc.) but still a very above average metal album in atmosphere and uniqueness of its genre.
The first song is the final of the story... 7 Day of july of 1777 is a come back to the past to told the story of ancestor of Jonathan and the fisrt apearing of Abigail! excellent album!
7th Day of July 1777 tells the tale of the old Count de la Fey killing his cheating wife and the baby within her by pushing her down the stairs. Then he (the ghost of the old Count) tells Jonathan to do the same to Miriam to keep Abigail from being born.

The wife killing and mummification part is count de la fey telling Johnathan what he did in 1777. He recommends that Johnathan kill Merriam so Abigail doesn't get reborn though her. At the end he's about to but she catches him off guard...I saw you got a bit mixed up with the characters. Hope this helps 😊
Ando buscando una banda de rock lastimosamente no me se el nombre del título de la banda ni el nombre del disco pero la portada de parece a una de Helloween es casi parecida porque es sobre en el espacio una mano agarrando una esfera alguien sabe de la banda ? 😭
I think it's time for you to explore a new genre of metal (for you); Symphonic metal. Two big bands into this genre is Nightwish (from Finland) and Therion (from Sweden). I think it would be best to start with Therion, the pioneers of the genre. If you're doing a full album, 'Vovin' or 'Sirius B' would be a good start for knowing their music.
This album is a masterpiece.
This is an amazing album, but I think "Them" is better overall. It might be bias though, as "Them" was the first KD album I ever heard.

"Them"! pliiiiiiis
You get used to the voice but read the lyrics please!!! And then you will fall in love with the KING!!
