One of the all time greats of any genre or era in my view . Regadless of the hot solos and mega chops he has a natural propensity to completely suit the song . For example , early 70's Gillan era Deep Purple he could be on top of the beat and pushing forward whereas later in the 70's with Coverdale etc , he could be on the beat and slightly behind in a more American R'n'B kind of way . Very adaptable . I saw him play live twice with Whitesnake and once with Gary Moore ( tremendous each time ) . I also saw him host a drum clinic at a working men's club in Newcastle upon Tyne UK just before Deep Purple reformed in the 80's .He stated there that he was immensely keen on John Bonham's sound and style as well as being particularly complimentary when asked about Carmine Appice .

It's really hard to label anyone from that era "the best." John Bonham, Ian Paice, Michael Shrieve, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Bill Ward, Clive Bunker, Barrie Barlow, Pierre Van Der Linden, Chuck Ruff, Dave Getz, etc. All stellar drummers from that era. All great and unique in their own way. Although, personally I think the most unique out of the bunch has to be Keith Moon. His style is uniquely his own and pretty much inimitable because he always played in the moment and from the heart, never playing anything exactly the same way twice.

    • @theshadester0

Whether he’s on the same level as Bonzo is completely subjective and somewhat irrelevant. I do know this, having seen both of them live, they were the only two drummers who on the screen at the back of the stage looked like the film had been sped up when the cameras showed close-ups!! Paice has a phenomenal snare drum technique which is almost second to none. Maybe because there are more members in Purple did his profile sometimes not come to the fore as much as Bonham’s did in Zeppelin, but there is absolutely no doubting his astounding ability, coupled with a lack of off-stage hell raising stories, there was no rocknroll notoriety surrounding him. He understatedly and brilliantly played what the song required until it was his turn to switch on the flair. Along with JB he is an absolute legend, and he trod a slightly different path to the Zep behemoth, but don’t be fooled by that laid back demeanour. The bloke can rock!

Little “insight” of my own - as a “non-drummer” - Deep Purple Mk II line-up (and, most likely, original DP line-up - i.e. Mk I, too) liked to “sink a few” - alcohol-wise - how much depends on which band member you’re talking about (look at Ritchie Blackmore’s Wikipedia entry for a “self-assessment”) but they all, more or less, stayed away from hard drugs - big lesson for all thinking of a career in the music business - you can’t retain the level of superb musicianship on display here by a legend in his 70s if you keep “burning the candle at both ends” !!!!
