Excellent as usual!!! As a long time RV electrician (Marathon Coach Inc. 15 years) your work is great. A slight technical improvement would be to flip your crimper so the round side (as opposed to the pin side)is on the “top” of the ring terminal. The “bottom” of the terminal is solid so the pin cannot separate the folded part of the terminal. This is hard to see as the manufacturers add a thin solid tube over the crimp section. Clearly not a big deal but for future projects a slightly better way to do it. Great looking van!

That's how I use them too. The crimp seems stronger that way.

I'm sorry Cody but you had me chuckling through the rest of that video after grabbing that bulb, it just reminded me of doing exactly the same when I fitted spotlights to come on with high beams on my Jimny. Pain can often be the quickest form of self teaching I find...
And honestly I think the fact you include these moments tells us that you know the importance of teaching people to learn through mistakes is just a way of life sometimes!

Your uncle is a smart man. Over 40 years ago I was replacing an antenna on the roof of an old 2 story farmhouse with a metal roof. My feet slipped out from under me and I started sliding down. About halfway down my pants pocket caught on a nail that was sticking up, and that slowed me down just enough to grab the extinction cord that we were using. That saved me from a bad fall.

I learned something new today. Never really seen anybody take a pair of pliers and take the extra part off a zip tie. That's a pretty good technique.

Just in case you didn't know in the 7 pin trailer hitch the pin in the center (pin 7) is usually backup power.

I don't remember if you've mentioned this in the past, but you did a neat trick that my dad taught me with zip ties. Once you secure it, rather than cutting off the excess, use some pliers and twist the "tail" until it comes off. That way, the part that's left over isn't super sharp, which is especially useful in situations like this, where you may end up reaching into that space some time in the future and forgetting those ties are there.

If a vehicle has a 7 way flat RV trailer plug it will have a wire for trailer back up lights . I used this to wire the headache rack on my truck. There is also a constant hot leg I put this on a switch on the bumper and used it to back feed the back up lights so when I'm hooking up a trailer at night after I get under the trailer I flip the switch and light up the area to make my trailer connections.

3M electrical tape is the best. Solder with 3M super 33 is industry standard. It's rate up to 600 V. It should work great for a 12V system. Guys love to act holier than though at home behind their computer.

    • @dennisrandall9698
      @dennisrandall9698 4 года назад

3M is great electrical tape. But ALL electrical tape ages quickly, becomes brittle and will loosen and come off. It’s not something to prevent long term protection against shorts. If it’s all you have this a zip tie on the end to prevent it from coming undone. But best is shrink tube or shrink tape. They make a pray that works but is messy as hell.

Hey Cody, another thing you could do that you may find useful is add a diode inline with that blue wire with a switch downstream of it, do this for both the upper and lower lights, and you can use them as utility lights without your brake lights coming on and without having to put it in reverse.

  • @fastcars1173

You can use the switch with a diode to have them as both reverse and auxiliary. With the diode only the spots will illuminate when the switch is on and they both will when put in reverse.

If you use the dollar store tape... A nylon wire-tie at the end of the run, will keep everything in place a whole lot longer. Problem with that tape is usually that the end curls up, and then it just unwraps itself from there. Put a wire tie on that end, to keep the end in place, and it will last as long as any other tape. Still way cheaper than the 'proper' tape. LOL

Forgive me, Cody, but I have to disagree with you on something (an extremely rare thing).Wiring harnesses don't necessarily make it "easy". The last time I had to change a battery cable,it was tied into 47 other wires. I had to cut into the harness, without damaging a anything, to separate the battery cable from the rest to change it.
I get what you mean, though.
ETA: Just remembered. I wanted to just totally bypass the battery cable with a new one, but there wasn't one long enough available (I was "on-site", not at home). There was no play in wiring harness, so when I cut the messed-up cable end off and replaced it, it would reach the battery post.
I suppose I could've just cut open enough to make it reach, and leave it all hanging that way, but that wouldn't've been "proper".
