  • The BMW i5 Touring represents one of our all-time favourites - the BMW 5 Series Touring estate - and turns it into an electric car. It comes with a choice of rear-wheel drive or high-performance four-wheel drive versions. It's a practical family car with sharp handling and a gorgeous cabin, but how far will ti really go on a charge? To find out, we decided to drive one from Munich to Dublin.

    Found with my current EQC, which has even worse range, that long drives are fine as my bladder and attention span demand regular stops every 2-3 hours. I've looked at one of these today and as soon as I sat in it knew it's going to be replacing the Merc SUV - it's so much more comfortable on the inside and sitting in a normal car position. Can't wait until the current lease is up now!

    Great video! And what a crazy drone shot you have in this at 8:55 ^^ It is a pleasure to watch :) The car looks fantastic, and I the "lower" model, the eDrive40 looks even better than the M60 xDrive, which has too muc black plastic for my taste.

    Cracking video! I think there are two important factors to consider prior to purchasing this tasty, but expensive car. Firstly, the range figure of 400 - 450Km will be further reduced in the winter months: and secondly, from personal experience, and that of colleagues, winter/all weather tyres are essential for rear wheel drive cars during the winter months.

    What I miss about this new 5series is that you cant open and close the trunk window anymore. I love that feature on my 2018 G31.

    • @CompletecarIe

      That is such a great feature and it's a shame it's no longer there.

      I own a 540i Touring right now and believe me if I say that this missing feature alone will make me look at other brands for when I need to replace it. Also seats seem to be worse vs. previous gen, and no soft close.

      @@forthelove0god Could you please give me an example of when opening only the window provides a big benefit, compared to just opening the trunk?

    • @forthelove0god
      @forthelove0god 27 дней назад +1

      @dstfno when you close the trunk you can only load so much, because things will fall off otherwise. If you can open the glass once you've closed the trunk, you can put everything on the top of the first layer of luggage up until the very edge of the glass. Believe me, it's a game changer. Not a surprise so many are complaining about this. If you didn't experience it, you may underestimate the impact.

      @@forthelove0god Thank you. I can understand it has benefit when you have to fully load your trunk often. For the one or two times per year I go on a trip fully packed I think I will manage without it :)

    I haven't seen one on the roads here in Ireland yet. The saloons don't seem to be selling like the previous versions. The looks are questionable, and despite your comments on the interior, the quality is not as good as previous versions. There is evidence of cost cutting everywhere. At 90k plus here in Ireland the cost is ridiculous, depreciation will also be a factor in considering any electric car. Give me a diesel estate at 65 to 70k and I might consider changing my g30 520d.

    • @davepmatthews
      @davepmatthews 8 месяцев назад +3

      It seems like pricing is rising everywhere but the pricing between models seems really out of step, you can get an X5 50e new for just over 100k, relative to that the price for the i5 estate seems crazy. I’m changing my g31 520d to a g31 530e as there is excellent value for 1 year old ones. At 50-55k for a year old model, paying nearly double for a cut back new version doesn’t seem to make sense.

    Thanks for the review. Agree that the interior is the best quality on the market but puzzled about the comments on the range. Who needs to drive 500km without stopping? Even if you have the bladder of an elephant it's not a good idea from a driver alertness point of view :) And these will be bought by families...good luck with getting kids to drive 5 hours without complaining ! Every motorway service station has a fast charger that will get you from 10 to 80 per cent in the time it takes to have a coffee

      I drive often more than 500km without stopping, one time I drove 2500km and only stopped for eurotunnel, one time for diesel and one time for something else. With an electric car it would have gone from just tiring to very frustrating and worrying about "where to charge" in addition.

      With a 500km highway range, you can stop but you don't need to charge. For the same reason that you don't want a ICE car with a small petrol/diesel that only allows you to do around 400kms at "legal" speeds

    An extra €10K over the PHEV seems somewhat excessive. Don't even get adaptive cruise control or a heated steering wheel in either. Is there a i3 3 series touring coming out. I note the 5 series diesel touring is gone and the 5 series touring petrol is special order. Seems the M-sport edition brings the car up to looking like a real BMW so thats near obligatory now. Strange that the PHEV model can be specced with adaptive suspension but not the heavier i5

    With smaller Rims and Tires, more Range should be possible. As i see, this car is on 21 Inch with 255 at the Front and 285 on the Back. Get some 19s with 245/275, this should bring some Kilometers.

    Range is plenty! When I was driving ICE cars I never drove for more than 3 hours anyway, so stopping for every 250-300 km and charging is not a problem at all. I need to get out and stretch my legs and go to the toilet and by the time I get back the car is already half way there on the charge ;-) Personally I like the sedan better, so I bought the i5 edrive 40 in M spec and as I do not have small children any longer I rather have a more elegant car as I have no need for the bulky boot.
