Almost all of the bassists I've ever met were: a) failed guitarists, b) failed drummers, c) guitarists who were really good but, as the band they were about to join had a guitarist that whined like a babygirl, then they were forced to grab the bass...
I myself was a frustrated drummer, but as soon as I realized that: a) there's only 1 bassist for every 5145873480.75 guitar players (and yes, the decimals are accurate), b) you can be as creative with a bass as with a guitar (or even more, if you play your cards well), and c) bass can be easily adapted into practically every single genre in the world (something that guitar can't do very well), then I learned to love the bass, and I even got my degree in music with a mention in jazz bass.

The final nail in the "speaker doesn't matter" argument...
Play your guitar rig though a bass speaker cabinet and see how awesome your thousands of dollars of snake-oil laced pickups and tone-wood sound then.
I had to do this out of necessity for a short time a few years ago moving from one band to another and from bass (back) to guitar. All I had was my Hartke 4x10 bass cab to run my Marshall guitar head through and it sounded like absolute S**T!! After a few rehearsals I managed to find a cheap cab with some Celestion redbacks and holy hell did things change. Obviously an extreme example but SPEAKERS F**KING MATTER!!

Love your channel, your work and content!!! Please DO keep opening our eyes and ears, as a musician and engineer I (we?) have been reproducing clichés of the industry for years, because that's what they "taught" us to be the right thing, and thus we ended doing things more with our eyes than our ears! How stupid that can be? But that was the standard... And unfortunately up to some point it still is. We need more eye openers that are sincere, unpretentious, and practical. So Thank You very much, and keep doing this wonderful work!! (And BTW, yes, "Confess" has been one of the most wonderful readings in some time, and also a very human, revealing, and sensible message for any one that, as me, has followed Rob's career for decades, and can find even a tiny bit of reflection in his story. Over time I learned when writing a song what some of the early signs are that it’s basically just not working and it’s time to work on a different song or maybe take a couple cool riffs from it and abandon the rest. But definitely took a while to get to that point and not just try to force a bad song to work.

Hey Glenn, I started an speaker experiment this year. I built a 412 cab with 2 celestion g65 and 2 jensen j12m. They are wired independently with 2 outputs. 2 small 5 watt amps power the speakers and i can fade between them with my audiointerface and reaper. You can get some crazy tones out of it and you are more versatile, than a pure 412. I bought a palmer cab merger, so I can combine all speakers with my bigger h&k tubeamp.

Osaka is a cool city. I hope you get to stay there longer than just this weekend.
Not sure what you're into beyond music, but lots of cool places to visit. Osaka Castle Park is awesome, and the keep at the top was converted in to a museum. There might be a cool show at Osaka Jo Hall next door to the castle. There are a bunch of smaller concert halls and clubs in the city to catch a show, too.
Cool shopping areas like Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi-suji, and Minami might be fun to visit. Osaka is a real short train ride to both Kyoto and Nara for some fun touristy stuff to do. Also, Kobe is right next to Osaka if you want to sample some authentic Kobe beef.
Lots of rock bands come from Osaka. Loudness formed there, as did Dir en Gray. Others are Scandal, Aldious, Crossfaith, and a _bunch_ of others. It has a really vibrant music scene with tons of small clubs in the 150-300 capacity range for shows where you're right on top of the stage.

Thanks for all you do Glenn. My brother is a bass player, I know I know, but, an older one who cant live heavy gear anymore. I built him a speaker cab using an old Garnet pa column I had. Basicly cut it in half, and put a 3 inch port in it for him. Because the cone size is smaller, it gives him wicked mids and highs, yes, the smaller the cone, the more highs a speaker will produce, the larger the cone size, the more low end the speaker will produce. The cab only weighs 26 pounds and sound awesome. Also, the less power rating the speaker has, usually results in better quality sound, allegedly. Someone a very long time ago told me, have more power in an amp to drive into a less powerful speaker will result in better quality sound. Something you can experiment with Glenn to prove if this is true or not. Also, you should experiment with cone sizes to see if brighter or more low end is produced when using different cone sizes. Cheers and F you Glenn, I love your show.

Hey Glen, I've been a fan of your content and advice for years, and it has truly helped me. I have a question that I'd love your input on. With the advancements in amp simulations, quad cores, and products like Axe-Fx, what should be the priority now: investing in high-quality guitar heads, high-quality guitar cabs, or just guitars?

Always enjoyed your content Glen. Certainly opened my eyes to about pickups and speakers for sure. I considered putting different pickups in my Epiphone SG and then I decided to lower the pickups because they were sounding hot….too close to the strings. Wow my result was amazing!!!.
Also even though I play through amp sims I’m amazed how it changed it up after some small Eq adjustments and cab sims. Keep it up Glenn I really enjoy your show. Cheers from Tasmania,Australia. 🍻🥳

Kohle Audio Kult has an oversized Mesa cab with four different speakers on it. Obviously for recording only as each speaker is mic’d up independently from the others. Would be interesting to hear how it’d sound with a room mic and speaker blend.

Hi Glenn, thanks for the amazing videos.
I use a Fractal AX8 and think it would be good to have a powered cab / FRFR. Have you already tested any? Good speakers? I read good things about the Headrush, Kemper and Laney, designed with the help of the amazing Devin Townsend. But I would love to have your take on them.
    Thank you.

Glenn, Really appreciate your videos. While more in the classic rock genre, your videos translate well in to there as well. I have a question about FRFR speakers/sims. Have you made any videos about FRFR speakers, and how they affect tone. I know frfr's are supposed to be agnostic to tone, but are they really?

Mesa on their website offers a V30 custom-made for MESA in the UK, which they also use in their cabinets. I wonder if there are any sonic differences between this V30 and the Chinnees one that you reviewed back in the day, the one you also made that great free IR. I hope you will investigate this someday. Keep up the good work Glenn.

Yeah. I got a Texas Dragon cabinet. I wanted to put 4 different speakers in to use in the studio. All 8 Ohms. So I could put a mic on them for layering GTR tracks. I know that each speaker, even the same brand/type would produce a different tone. That would be a great experiment!

I was just a couple of days late on being on stage last wednesday with a Cort KX700 guitar, due to a smart guy from the local music shop who forgot to ship the instrument in time 😊. I received it today and this guitar is fucking stellar. Got it on sale for the amazing price of less than 800 € 😮. As owner of two Solar guitars with Evertune, i had my doubts about Cort, but they were unfounded. So much guitar for the money. I will definitely go on stage with this guitar and take pictures 😂.

That would be quite funny, if you got the guitarist to plug into the "magic box", but it gets sent to the Line6 Spider meme amp that's wired to a 4x12 cab with the best speakers.

I told them no just put 4 different microphones on the four speakers I'll play it once stagger one foward and one backward by micro seconds done. They say they've used that process for other projects since.

Just curious if 8ohm vs 16ohm 112 makes a difference. Since most 112 are 16 and 212 are 8. I have a mesa 112 that 8. Does that mean that it’s just as comparable to a 212 thanks

  • @AlexandreCriado
    @AlexandreCriado 2 месяца назад

about the 4x12 with 4 different speakers, I see (at least) two issues : first, it may be complicated to find 4 different speaker with a really close sensitivity, which means one would probably be louder or quieter than the others. second, if you find 4 speakers that gets you an overall great sound, that also means that you will have to get the studio and/or FOH engineer put at least 4 microphones on your cab and use 4 tracks for your guitar alone.
On the top of that, you multiply the possibilities and it can become an endless quest for balanced and nice tone. I think there are enough speakers on the market so you can find your dream tone with just one or two

Tbh I like it when Glenn calls something that applies to me idiotic. I'm not an expert at this stuff, i just love metal and playing guitar and I like to record it sometimes. I only found this channel because im really bad at recording and was looking for tips to find out whatever i was doing wrong, and its turned out that Ive been doing lots and lots wrong. Just a couple quick examples: I used to crank the guitar up way too loud in my mixes and wonder why they never sounded huge, I also used to try to make my guitar tone approximate the sound of a full mix and would wonder why it sounded thin and shitty in the mix. There are plenty of more things ive learned here i could list but I've made the point. What I dont get is that if Im here to find out what im doing wrong and get better at recording/mixing, and Glenn points out something stupid that I'm doing, im supposed to get mad or offended? Maybe if I was a pro I'd have more of an ego about this, but if i was a pro i probably wouldnt be looking up recording tutorials on youtube right?
Anyway, keep up the good work man \m/

Similar thing happens in most industries - for instance if you put a fancy expensive high-quality power supply unit in your computer, it's probably a SeaSonic. Sure, it might have a sticker on it that says something else, but SeaSonic is the OEM of most of the other brands 'high-end' models. I went direct to SeaSonic and put their Platinum psu in this computer 12 years ago and it's still powering along beautifully, despite my house power supply being so dirty it's killed the protection circuitry in the Belkin power strip everything is plugged into.

I bought a Cort Earth series acoustic parlor guitar, a superb instrument with abalone ’tree of life’ inlays in the fingerboard, and the most beautiful tone I’ve ever heard. It cost me around $800 Australian. I subsequently discovered that it is identical to a Washburn Centennary reissue which cost around $2500. Made in the same factory. To exactly the same specs. Only the name on the headstock was different. One third of the price ! You can keep your ‘American’ version. Cort make lots of famous brand guitars. No one makes guitars better IMO.

As a drummer for 32 years and a guitarist for about 24 years, I love how you pick on everyone! Also, I pick a guitar from how it feels in my hands over the wood it was made from. The second you add gain to a guitar, chances of hearing a tonal difference is damn near zero! As Glen says, TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS!!

I'm strictly a bedroom guitarist nowadays, but I'd still rather tinker with speakers now after watching your vids for a while. I even tried moving my phone around while recording some riffs to see how it changes the tone, and what a difference even that made! Btw, any chance you could do a vid comparing tones of various speakers paired with the Celestion G12T-75? Particularly the Celestion Type-A, as that's one I'm seriously considering for my own 2x12 with the G12's.

Glen I think you are being misunderstood a little bit after reading some comments. I think people are missing the fact that you are steering people based on HOURS of experimentation . I think you are all for creativity and thinking outside the box. You have just spent a ton of time trying shit that gave you the results you were looking for. Some assholes don't understand that you aren't closed minded, you are NOT a gear snob at ALL rather you are exactly the opposite and you encourage creativity. You have just consolidated some ideas that are very helpful and of great importance when folks are looking to get the results THEY are looking for IN the most economical way possible. Great job and keep it up!! Cheers!

Have you had a go at keyboard players? I have a hi-fi with a built in A-B speaker switch and recently set up two sets of different hi-fi speakers for A and B. When changing I can hear a difference, have you tried an A-B box on an amp to quickly switch between cabs to compare them? Would it damage an amp?
I used to be a guitarist but my ego wasn't big enough so I stopped and became a Colin Grigson, and I didn't even need the Lobotomy.

I really like watching your vids because I have been telling people for years that BS like tone wood, pick ups and guitar brands are better than others same with amps. I have owned Marshall, Soldano, Peavy etc. I ended up selling them and my first guitar collection. Later when I got started collecting again I started trying every different guitar rather than going in with blinders on I came across and truthfully I found very little difference in how the guitars sounded one from the other thru the exact same amp on the same settings. I stated comparing amps and found some sounded better a huge difference that brand X guitar sounded against brand Y. I also realized the head could sound WAY different depending on the cabinet/speakers. I ended up trading an old Peavy Bass head from the 70s for a newer Line 6 Spyder 2 150w head. It sounded like crap thru mu fairly new Marshall 4x12 cabinet. The head sounded better thru the cabinet the kid had when I bought it. I took my head to my local shop and plugged it into over a dozen new and used cabinets. The tone was different in more than half of them. I found a guy in NY who built custom cabinets and I found one used thru my local shop dirt cheap because no one knew the maker. I took my head with me to try it out and bought the cab right then and there. I love the combination and I used get shit when I showed up to a gig with my Line 6 but people ate their words when they heard it. I was accused of modifying the head etc. I tried to explain it was the cab and speakers that made the difference. Usually fell on deaf ears and heard a lot of grumbling worse when I showed up with a guitar brand they never heard of or a brand that was considered cheap.

Neil Aspinall: Did you know that Court has a "Custom shop", and that they have sent very well built and gorgeous one off instruments to dealers, and have done so for decades already? I have had a few of them come through my repair shop and they are great instruments. Some of their owners don't even know they have an unofficial one of a kind, only because Cort's aren't known to be the best guitars Cort makes, because they try not to compete too hard with their clients like Ibanez, PRS, and so many others. So they just put it out there that they are indeed a force to be reckoned with in an inconspicuous way.

Also I have a problem, can someone help please? I'm trying to play guitar on my PC with amp sims and there's a lot of issues with that. I had to buy an audio interface to get rid of interference and horrible latency. All good. Now, I tried amped - roots because you recommended it at some point, but now the problem is whenever I turn the sim on, it completely takes over my sound card, as in - I can't play any mp3 files, YT videos or other applications because the sound from my PC is blocked. Everything is gone except for the amp sim until I turn it off. So no way to have background tracks while playing distortion from amp sim. I tried getting some digital audio workstations and the same problem persists. I have dynamics set which connect to my PC. I'd rather it stayed that way. Are there any amp sims, DAW's or other means that. just. WORK? I hope I'm just doing something wrong because this is unacceptable babyrage please help
