- I hope you guys appreciate the effort i put into this video, this is by far the hardest and most frustrating video i have done thus far. enjoy the video my fellow lure nuts.

The carving process is beautiful. You are not wood working, you are making love to it. Very inspiring!
If u don't like sanding. Just rough sand the blank. Then start by sealing wood with epoxy or poly acrylic to give u a perfect finish to paint on
you cant really carve any details after that though

I've had some swim-baits for quite a while, I've got them all prepared for painting. Then everything came to a halt, how on earth do I clear coat them and seal them at the same time without getting it on the strips of Kevlar? So they've been put away until I can find out how to do it correctly. I'm hoping to sell them so I need to know that they're 100% sealed and no chance of it peeling or chipping off! Am I worrying about nothing lol or should I make key fobs out of them lol? You're the best to ask, I just hate taking up any of your time as I know that you must be busy! If that's the case I will understand 100% if you don't reply.
Yours look so perfect and even more important they look so Life-like in my opinion. All those scales carved separately... Now that's got to be dedication. Definitely deserves 'BIG THUMB'S UP ALL DAY & NIGHT'👍😷👍🏴

Its because of solar baits and a few other bait makers and painters that i finally took the plunge into the bait making and painting world. Thank you for teaching and showing us if it wasnt for you my baits would be no where near as good as they have been turning out so far. Especially with a cheap $ 10.00 modified makeup air brush.

Thx for the video! Do you also weight the belly of the baits? or do the the hook hangers and hooks add enough weight for that?
You have to add weight on these types of lures for stabil gliding action.

I am still really new to the craft and I love you work but I have some questions. Is this technique or the hinge technique better for beginners and which one is better for action of the bait? Where did you get the template for the facial features? Could this style be used for multiple body segments?

for beginners the screw eye to screw eye or the metal pin option is way easier to get working well compared to the door hinge. The template for the facial features is just a skech i drew out prior starting working on the lure. pretty much any shape could be also made into a multi segmented version.

I see in your video's that you work with two kinds of hinges. One "door-hinge" style and on like in this video with screws. Are there up and downsides on both methods and which one do you prefer?
door hinge looks nice but its a pain in the ass to clear coat those lures that have it so now i prefer the screw option. it feels much more durable too

What is the bait made out of I know you made the first out of wood but what kind of plastics did you pour in the mold
It's Feather lite
On these dual mold baits. Do you weigh them in the mold like some of the one piece molds I see you do or do you find it easier to weigh these two or three piece baits after you pour them.
i add the weight to predetermined spots inside the mold before pouring
SolarBaits ok. I have a two piece mold and trying to add weight has been a little tricky making sure the weight stays centered when pouring the bait. Thanks. Keep up the videos, I really enjoy watching.

Lol its me again but really loving the work as always! Your video quality has gotten alot better not saying it wasnt good in the past. Also your more recent videos with the shad and the bass have been particularly informative and inspiring as those are prey fish here in the states.

Also just a tip: If you use mold release spray or even just cooking oil spray before you pour the second half of the mold it would separate much more easily
ahh never heard of the cooking oil method, i will have to try that someday. Also thanks for the nice words, i have tried to put little bit more effort into these than what i did before.

I'm in the process of carving my fish and have done a little reading about casting molds. I just learned that the feather lite resin floats in water. Do you add weight to the bait? Or are the hooks enough to keep it under water? Thanks for the video! You are great at what you do!
feather lite is fairly buoyant so you are going to have to add some weigh inside in order to make it swim better and also sink at a desired rate.

great video would have loved to see more of the jointing process after the halfs were cast . how the screw eyes were connected/ fixed in place . would have thought 2 eyes connected by a pin in the second half would be best . any reason why you choose not to use this method ? thanks in advance
Screweye to screweye is just more easier to use for me and i have a huge stock of them so it just makes more sense to use them. I dont think the action will be any different compared to the pin method either.

Hey Mikko. My first swimait is almost ready to make a mold of. Do you mold the fins together with the fish's body or do you make a separate mold of them? I have also a question about the fusion foil that you use on your baits. Do you heat set them around the lures and afterwards apply epoxy or do you just use epoxy without termo forming the foil?
i usually make a seperate mold for them because i like to use clear resin for the fins. never used any fusion foil on my lures you must be mistaken me with someone else

oh yeah totally forgot all about that, if i recall right i did not get it working well on any of the lures i made, it ended up peeling off super easilly or i would get horrible wrinkles hence i didn't really do anything from after those few experiments

nice vid and lure, why make soft baits though when your hard baits will probably outshine those soft baits and last for years.
glue the two piece of wood together before you cut it out. it would save you a little bit of time. ive always wanted to make my own lures. i never tried though, i have a couple ideas i want to try but i dont think i could carve all that detail. i still dont really get how you do that.
well simply because sometimes fish are not biting the hard stuff and that's the time when you bring out the soft stuff, you never know that might be what they want that particular day. also soft baits are way faster to make than hardbaits where i could have a soft bait done in few hours ready to be fished versus a hard bait that takes days to make.
ya you got a nice set up and everything and all the stuff do do that so ya why not. for me though i was thinking of making a big light weight glide bait so i wouldnt have to blow 100 dollars on one and 250$ for a set up to throw em... to me the soft plastics make perfect sense though for guys selling baits. like you say you can make tons of soft ones after you have made the master a lot faster then carving them. so you can make money faster doing that but the baits come with the disadvantage of always having to be replaced ect. i would feel each time i poured a soft plastic one to use myself i would be wasting money if i still had the master available to use. but i do see where you are coming from. losing the master ect would be a pain to replace. so anyways i like all your vids you are good at making baits. so im trying to make a big lightweight glide bait and i want to use balsa. i just want one joint in the middle of it. what would be a good hinge to use? and what tricks can i use to make sure it doesnt rip apart easily? can i drill holes fill em with epoxy and then screw into the epoxy and they be stronger then say screwed into the balsa? i was hoping to find any tips. i know people dont like bala or they just make like cranks with them ect. my goal is to make a big lightbait for the set up i have so i dont have to spend a ton of cash just to throw some bigger baits. any tips would help. either way i know it will be some trial and error but the least of that i could do the better. thanks man. i wish i had more time to watch all your vids though i will get to them eventually. i subbed, keep up the good work. cya
regarding your question, first of all dont use balsa for glide baits its too buoyant and you would have to add a ton of lead into it just to make it sink. i would use any hardwood that isn't naturally oily like some are, meaning stuff like birch, maple or even oak. the type of hinge is a tough one and kinda depends on what kind of look your aiming for. i personally use screw eye to screw eye connection and it works well for me.
At least for largemouth bass fishing, although you can catch giant bass on hard swimbaits (and you will), you're more likely to catch the very biggest ones on soft swimbaits (specially if you fish them slow). They just feel more natural. The Huddleston Deluxe Trout swimbait is the swimbait that has caught by far more bass over 10lbs. Hard swimbaits like a glide bait (S-Waver 200 or a Deps Slide Swimmer 250) or a wake bait (MS Slammer) are better for attracting fish. Fish will follow the lure and you'll know where they live and come back later with another lure to try and catch them. A big glide bait will pull fish from a great distance. And many times you'll be able to catch some of those fish. But you're more likely to catch the biggest fish on soft baits. I use both hard and soft swimbaits because they complement each other. By the way, I know soft baits are usually better for the bigger fish, but my biggest swimbait fish was caught on a glide bait. ;)
Why couldn't the actual glidebait itself be made from wood instead of molding it? And what is the material that you form the lure from the mold?
sure it could have and i have done that many times in the past. However i planned to make whole bunch of these and going thru the same process of carving and making the baits just takes too damn long so molding and just using more consistent material like casting resin just makes more sense.

I love your work. I have made a few lures but not with the detail that you have accieved. I am going to make my first one here soon. I have poplar and oak around (for when I use my lathe) but can you tell me what wood that you feel is the best for what you do.

1) what method did you use to attach the two halves together?
2) I am about to get some feather lite and I am curious how you feel about it. and do you use anything to sink your lures or do you just fish them at the top of the water.

can you send me a link of the best way to connect two parts? There are some that I am sure that you have one or two that have helped you. I want to see your technique because when I am trying it the two parts are very far apart and it looks bad because the metal is very visible and your's is not.
I'ts easy you just open the eyeleds of both screw eyes snap them together and close the eyeleds, you are most likely going to need 2 set of pliers to do that. the reason you don't see them as visible on mine is that i have small indention where i put the drill the holes for the screweyes so they sink into the bait lil bit.
ok that makes since. maybe my problem is the type of eyelets I have tried in the past. The ones that I have gotten are from a hardware store and they are kind of bulky. where do you get your's? And also most of the ones that I have found are zink not stainless steel so I worry about opening and closing them causing them to become weak.
the kind i get are kinda bulky too but i guess that depends on the definition of what bulky is, anyways i got mine from lureparts.nl.

its really hard to say. it really depends on how big the scales are and how big is your lure + the material and experience matters too. I've never actually taken time to see how long it takes for me but we are usually takes couple of days.

i mostly sell on ebay ( solarsellsbaits) or at my own facebook group solarfallbaits finland. i dont do any hired work, just dont have any interest in commision stuff anymore.
I also see the finished lure and see how it will swim when I'm making lures

What kind of resin do you use that you pour into the mold andcan i get it here in the USA or the equivalent of here. And were do you get the micro balloons.
i use forcast burro and smooth-on feather lite which has micro balloons already mixed to the resin, this particular bait was made from feather lite
