    Still my favourite fix Steve, 2:30 classic moment. My dad used to tinker, when TV's had valves, he had a box fill of valves, you could hear him tinkering around, tapping them to see if it made any difference until you hear a little bang and a few expletives. His crowning moment, he had two TV's, one with sound the other with a picture, rather than try to fix either one, he placed them on top of each other to make one unit, we had to endure that what felt like forever...

    • @mandolinic

    Brings back memories of a tv I was fixing back in early 2000's, with kids running round the kitchen and I got distracted and dropped a screwdriver into the guts and this huge exploding arc rendered said telly thoroughly unfixable and it was brown trousers and bicycle clips time and of course I copped it from missus for buggering the telly beyond repair so I got all grumpy and took it outside and went at it with my 20 pound sledge and kids were wailing at this point as no games console or telly for 'em... told 'em it served 'em right but two days of them really playing up and I had a new tv for peace o' mind and a quiet life.

    I don't think the capacitors/fuses were faulty at all. The black stuff is on the bottomside of the PCB where the topside still looks fine. I think you "just" shorted the board on the big met fan-thing that's rotating there.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 Год назад

      @Coronadraht I'm fairly certain they aren't, particularly not the one near the L/N/E connections. That one's definitely a filter capacitor to suppresss RF interference and I suspect so is the other one. Capacitance hardly matters so replacing them wasn't strictly necessary. The reason for the light not working was the mechanically broken potentiometer.

    Those are safety capacitors, notice they are labelled "X2". They fails open circuit instead of failing closed circuit like a normal capacitor. They are placed between active and neutral on the mains input. If you put a normal capacitor there it will go short circuit and the board will catch fire from mains short.

    You can set super glue/cyanoacrylate glue nearly instantly using bicarbonate of soda, and as a bonus it will create a gusset to reinforce the connection. It isn't useful in all situations, but replacing the plastic tabs that hold the wiper on the potentiometer is one of would be useful in.

    Poly-Film capacitors work a little like fuses and so you find them a lot in situations where you need power smoothing and rush protection (say the heater filament was shorted or the house had a lightning strike or just poor quality old wiring), they've also got quite a long lifespan although their common application means they fail dramatically a lot of the time before they even get the chance to get old.

    • @StezStixFix
      @StezStixFix  2 года назад +3

      Ah, thanks Sparks that makes sense. I thought they must be some kind of safety capacitor 👍

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 Год назад

      @@StezStixFix Their main purpose is RF filtering. Basically capacitors are (somewhat complicated) resistors for alternating current but their resistance depends on the frequency. A 10 nF capacitor will barely pass any current from the 50 Hz mains supply but for a kHz or Mhz signal it's a dead short. And that's precisely the purpose in circuits like this - short out any RF currents. You find them either in sensitive electronics (to make them work properly) or in appliances with motors that create lots of interference (brush arcing is a massive RF source, both via the mains supply and over the air, a brushed AC motor without mains filtering will kill FM and analogue TV reception several rooms over).
      They have (as far as I know) nothing to do with surge protection (that would be varistors that fail short to earth in case of a lightning strike, diverting the overvoltage to earth instead of frying the electronic) and there's absolutely nothing protecting electronics from dodgy house wiring.

      I knew from the preview picture that there would be short circuits involved.
      I once caused a lovely one working on an old PC power supply. The PCB wasn't screwed to the case and somehow it moved and shorted to earth with an almighty bang, completely exploding a glass fuse. Of course it happened at night too so everything was dark because the RCD did what it was supposed to. Fortunately the fuse board was in the same room.

    I remember my father (who was an electrician with the MEB originally) was given a rather large electric shock by an electric fire. My mother had to literally push him off the device as he had just become stuck to it at the end of a screwdriver. He did recover thankfully. Not sure why he had been poking at it while it was live!

    Goodness as soon as I saw that potentiometer draped over what looked like a metal case I got very nervous! It didn’t pan out how I thought it would but still scared the bejesus out of me! You’ll be a bit more careful in future won’t you?

      Absolutely! I'll be wearing a rubber suit and washing up gloves at the very least! I haven't looked at anything 240 volts since this video, and I'm hoping I don't have to ever again! 😬

    4:08 I was thinking I've never seen fuses like those.
    Only other devices that look similar is strange shaped varistors.
    Considering they're usually blue and look like ceramic disc capacitors, it was quite an odd find.
    I think those you have are possibly Mylar wound, resin sealed.

    It's one of those electronic lessons that you get taught once only if you're lucky. NEVER have an energised circuit board dangling where it can short to anything. It was incredibly predictable what was going to happen as soon as you unscrewed the board from its mount.
    It could have been worse though, you could have put your hand inside to stop it touching.

    Great fix and very entertaining video.

    • @StezStixFix
      @StezStixFix  2 года назад +5

      Thanks Craig. I think it must have made contact with the casing, but it's hard to tell. I think they're safety capacitors, so they're supposed to pop if something goes wrong. Either way, it scared the b'jesus out of me! 😁

      100% chance he shorted it against chassis. The burn marks were on the bottom of the board, not where the components that failed are on.
      It happens to everyone at least once.

    I laughed when you said I’ve got a new cat and. It’s pretty vicious 😂🤣 as I looked down at my own wrist area with identical scratches!
    Had many over the years our latest kitten now an adult is just the same! She is a viscous “don’t touch me unless I come for you to touch me, and then you can only stroke me for a set period that I determine and if you don’t stop at that point I will attack b*tch”. But I still lovey her lol…

    I know you verified the potentiomter was working before you put it all back together, but why did you not test it when showing the unit working? I thought that would be your big payoff since that was the initial problem.
