      Not at all and thats why everyone turned on him so fast. Had he not done that it could have all went an entirely different way. As mentioned, Linus offered.... and the verge basically spit in his face, go back and look at linus' videos on the aftermath. Honestly Steph should reach out to linus, and do the Re-Do. to Come back & say things like calling those people 'Angry Nerds' & 'people are just Jealous because he has a better PC than them' are personal attacks & I think this is what caused all the personal attack comments towards Stefan

      Stefan put on a big show of how this was an insignificant bump in the road, and how he's so totally over it and back on the horse, but any time Timmy stirred the conversation toward the question of whether or not the dude is still in the tech industry, he got super salty and evasive. Also, unless The Verge has him under some crazy legal agreement, he's nuts for shitting on all the tech youtubers who offered him a do-over.

Here you finally get a shot in the industry you love, and you get thrown into a no win situation, and the community you want so desperately to be a part of just continuously shits on you for 2+ years. Let's not forget WHY we still talk about this video and why we mocked The Verge this much! The original Verge video was a blessing because it was a free lesson plan for the class hour to sit with my computer maintenance students and show them the wrong way to do things, talk about why they were wrong, and show them how it's supposed to be done. Like for example, not bukakeing your CPU with a whole tube of thermal paste when you already have pre-applied paste on the cooler.

      I've built a few PCs. One fear that comes with a build is not applying enough thermal paste or applying it unevenly. Most is fairly non-conductive so I don't see what the problem is with applying a bit more than needed. Within reason of course because it will make a mess. I can't really say anything bad about his choice of tools either. Yeah, nice tools would have been better but it's not a requirement. I have a pretty nice bench multimeter that I like to use, but if a lightbulb is all you need then why not? I think the take away is that building a working computer is fairly simple as long as that person knows what the requirements are and can be careful. It's definitely much more approachable now days. Why on earth does being an athlete make a difference here. It doesnt. That apology on twitter wasn't even an apology, all he listed were excuses. For someone who states they've build PCs in the past these "silly" choices dont make sense even for being rushed. Especially with the tools required to build a PC, that's just something pulled out of his ass because that's a very hard mistake to pull. "You're going to need an Allen wrench." Wtf. I disagree with your opening statement that he’s just trying to do his job. He not only refused to do even the most basic of research, but he ignored the manuals and when confronted with rightfully made criticism of his frankly irresponsible video he insulted everyone for it.
    Dude should’ve bowed out of making the video when he realised he didn’t know what he was doing, or he should have taken the time to research how to build a pc. I’m not terribly familiar with building a pc, but by just doing 30 minutes of research you can learn how to do most things properly, I guarantee that from personal experience.

    TL;DR: Stefan did nothing wrong except being emotional, all other responsibilities IMO lies on The Verge and its disastrous PR.
    I am 19 now, I started using computer at 6, started playing with scratch at 7 and code Pascal at 8, got my first laptop at 12, I built my first PC (hard line watercooled) at 14, Built a watercooled server as a gaming PC at 16, remodified it to use actual Xeon server chips at 17. Now I have built 4 Watercooled PCs (1 SFF, 1 server with Tower 900), got my first job earlier this year because the amount of stuff I invested into Windows Server and Windows in general, learnt about stuff like linux, my company hired me as a Desktop Support Role even when I dropped out at 17.
    Dozens of people told me stop wasting your parents' money on computers you don't need. I was like "Yes I don't need it, but if I want to go towards my goal and find a job I desire, and then pay it back for twice, or even ten times as much I would have chosen this path. I learnt linux, I learnt basic programming, I learnt Windows Powershell, I learnt bash, I learnt Active Directory all by myself with the help of a fucking monitor and over 100k hours of doing nothing but staring at the monitor memorizing and playing with software I had never used before just to **learn** all these technologies. A few called me a nerd but I myself refuses to consider as one, as I am only trading off time to learn something that I think is helpful for me to develop the greatest technology in the future that may help the tech industry, or even other industries, to evolve.
    All started with a passion, assessment (of what you have), planning, explanation to investors (in this case my parents - they trusted me after understanding the whole plan), execution, evaluation and back to passion.
    Stefan did nothing wrong being passionate, he assessed what he had, he planned out, explained to The Verge, they did not listen to him and changed his plan, making his execution came out bad, and he evaluated that the situation isn't as bad as some "nerd" said and responded moderately with feelings (which IMO is a bit over the line but probably whoever got bullied online would do this or have negative thoughts and commit suicide, especially by the company that actually hired them and did not defend them they feel helpless), and he's back to his passion once again not letting it down.

    He seems like a nice enough guy, but he still doesn't seem to take FULL responsibility for his own mistakes. At one point in his tweets, he said he made mistakes he never made before. (and maybe that's true for some of them) I find that hard to believe though for all of them. Like, he previously knew how to apply thermal paste, and then while being videoed, he completely forgot? I understand that he was probably rushed which I'm sure made things even worse, and Verge handled the whole thing horrendously. But he should just own his mistakes a little more, and even make fun of it a little, and post a new video showing how much he has improved and that now he knows how to do it all correctly. All he would get is praise.

  • @adde27
    @adde27 3 года назад +2

    Nah, the Verge did do a great deal of damage, but Stefan added plenty of fuel himself. And he didn't do some "silly choices" - he blatantly spread misinformation. As many of the critics pointed out, that if someone else followed this video, they would very likely ruin their components.
    But sure, everyone deserves a second chance.
