rarely have I been more amused than at Brennan's loss of hope as a second image of a chicken is presented. You can feel despair.
For me it's the immediate change of expression from quiet cocksuredness to absolute confusion as soon as his first bird comes around, gets me everytime.
My wife and I have mumbled "...thaaats another chicken" at least once a day since we watched the episode, haha.
it's the combo of second chicken and Katie struggling a little bit that really does it for me :D

For some background info the contestants have heart monitors on if they can keep their heart from going 20 points above resting while enduring the challenge presented they are awarded a point.
This challenge was designed specifically to stress out Brennan. It compounds Brennan’s hatred of losing, his love of bird facts, and his indignation towards an unfair game.
Best part being that by the end of this, Brennan’s heart rate was 21 points over resting.

@@SmashAdams It was mostly the compounding fact that while the others were merely able to say 'chicken' or 'penguin' which are the common names of the birds, brennan was only allowed to have the mostly scientific names of the birds as correct guesses, and they were very difficult ones at that. This was a game entirely made to go directly for his throat.

Not just that, Sam had a dirty tell that he had shenanigans planned: when he introduced Brennan at the start of the episode, he said "yes or no? Never cast your vote alongside Brennan Lee Mulligan!"

one of my favorite things about this incident is brennan tweeting at sam, in the middle of a fully unrelated exchange between sam and somebody else, that he's purchased a set of 170 bird cards that he's gonna learn over the next ten months. it's just incredible
you can even see him asking on the page where he bought it whether the roseate spoonbill is included

My absolute favorite part of this entire event is when Brendan gets his first picture and you can see the quiet confidence shatter, and slowly turn to panic

It is great, but I have to butt in here. This is not his *entire* lore with birds. There are a bunch of other times when he mentions bird facts, for example, he does it a bunch in "Misfits and Magic" on Dimension 20
Brennan and I had the exact same instinct. "It's not real, he's gaslighting me."
Funny enough that was the only bird in Brennan's line up that I was confident of the common name of, grouse just look like that especially the males when they get all puffed up
Can we all appreciate the flawless editing on this video? The cuts to other game changer episodes, the text over the screen, and choosing exactly the right moments together really sells the story and makes it compelling to watch. Seriously stellar work op.
Also - poor Brennan. Being the house villain has it's downsides sometimes.

I'm not a bird person and we have them where I live so I knew it immediately and went oh no. I would have got it wrong too because it's only relatively recently that the "greater" moniker was added.

The game was designed against him. The first bird is a pheasant but Siamese fireback is the specific term. He did get it right
There are a looooot of birds. I'm a birder and I don't even know every bird in North America (I knew the Greater Sage Grouse was a real bird but I got it mixed up with the Prarie Chicken.)
Bennan's face when he saw his first bird of the mini-game was priceless.

I actually did recognize the Sage Grouse. I didn't know it was specifically a "greater" one.
You know, I could have sworn Brennan was, like, the designated bird facts guy. But I must have been thinking of someone else.
It was just called the sage-grouse until 2000, when the lesser sage-grouse was described as a separate species (rather than just a smaller version of the same species).
Fun fact, and Brennan would enjoy this: the lesser sage-grouse was the first new avian species to be described from the USA since the 1800s.

My fave thing about this is not only is this deliciously malicious, but the challenge is to not raise ur heartbeat/blood presure. So in the beginning when the game is announced brennan is immediately trying to stay calm because HE EXCITED abd by the end of it hes trying to stay calm from SEETHING ANGER and failing
