Anchoring My 31ft boat in Catalina Island

  • In this video I am testing out the live aboard lifestyle by staying on an anchor overnight and getting it back on board! show you guys our pattern of where we swung on anchor overnight! It’s super cool to see the app track my movements! I show you guys my new mushroom anchor I got and using it for the first time for a quick snorkel with the pups Maui and Kiki. The orange and Blue fish are my favorite! Then I show you how I pull in my rocker stopper and put it away! (Bonus points for whoever can tell me how many times I said “Rocker Stopper” in the video! Lol) I then pull up the anchor which was a challenge! My plan luckily worked, which was to pull in some rope, cleat it off, and pull the slack through the windlass, repeat. This worked to get to the chain then I used my snubber line to relieve the tension from the chain so I could get it around the windlass. Off camera (it unfortunately died and I had to change the battery) the chain slipped through the windlass and I had to grab my tool to tighten it and luckily once I tightened it, it didn’t slip once! Then the windlass worked Perfectly and I didn’t have to pull up the anchor by hand anymore! After I get the anchor put away we start out journey to emerald bay, but first a stop in two harbors for water! It’s pretty windy once I arrive in emerald and getting the mooring on came with some challenges. Thank you for watching! In the next video I will show you emerald bay and the beautiful snorkeling it has! emerald bay is one of my favorite places to be in Catalina! If you made it to the bottom of the description, please leave me a comment and let me know because I will respond to you!

    It might be in one of Sheldon and Amy's episodes of fun with flags, the starboard spreader flag halyard is for courtesy flags when visiting other countries, or your YC or pirate flag 🙂the USA should be on a staff at the stern of the ship.

    Pulling anchor looked good to me. Good idea to move forward to ease some stress on the windlass. Anything that eases the stress on a motor extends the life of said motor and that's a win.

    A better option for a second anchor instead of a mushroom is a Danforth or fluke anchor. They stow flat, and can't be beaten in mud by any other anchor. The Mushroom tends to drag whenever any kind of real force is put to it. A Danforth is how I reeled in my wife. I told her I had a Hooker tied up in the basement, and I asked if she wanted to see it. She grabbed a kitchen knife and followed me into the basement. It was a Hooker brand Danforth anchor tied up down there, and I told her I liked sailing. We've been married for 20 years now.

    • @rafaeldacruz4898
      @rafaeldacruz4898 Год назад

      We usually get a Catalina 30 for day sails around Newport and something a little bigger for Catalina. My favorite was a Beneteau 373, but it’s not on the fleet anymore.
      We got hooked after doing a skippered charter to Catalina on a Oceanis 35.1. That was a dream boat, but the daily rate is just prohibitive.
      Prices have gotten crazy lately (500 to 700/ day), so we haven’t done it in a while.

    An easier was to pull up the anker rope is to run it to your winch on the side of the mast. This is assuming you have a winch on the side of the mast. I couldn't tell in the video.

    Need to get yourself into boat fitness. Pulling up the chain,rowing the dinghy, hoisting the mainsail, learn to use the boat as an gym. And go for an long hike when you are on shore. Helps to keep the body in condition. The dogs need to as well.

    Hi Captain, awesome video!! I have a Lewmar Vx1 windlass on my 26 foot boat and it is designed to use Rode and Chain both. I use 5/8 3 strand rode with 1/4 inch chain and have never had a problem with it pulling up the rode and transitioning to the chain. maybe they make a Gypsy for your windlass that would work the same.

    AYE AYE Captain , shiver me timbers yet another koool vid, those anchors baffle me,as they're ment to stop you drifting around but you can raise them without to much bother !!! what if they get snagged up ? do you have to literally dive down there to free them..BIG LOVE to you & the sea dog crew :)

    • @CaptainChrista
      @CaptainChrista  Год назад +1

      Thank you! And yes the are meant to be used in muddy and sandy bottoms! if they get stuck sometimes you have to dive it yes! and when you pull vertical on it they come out but if you pull horizontally they stay put! I love that name! Sea dog crew!

    Hey Homie, could you take your anchor rode and run it back to the winch for your main halyard and crank with that to pull your anchor rode in far enough to get the chain onto the windlass gypsy? or all the way back to the cockpit cabion top and use your main sheet winch and then use blocks as fairleads to keep the rode from rubbing on anything. Watching you have that much trouble makes me nervous for when the time comes that you're forced to pull up anchor in heavy sea conditions or in heavy winds. That day will come and you never know when that'll be.

    Ever considered bringing on someone looking for sailing experience to train for their captain certification?
    I bought a 30' sailboat with little to no experience now looking to get certified but not really interested in giving alot of money to big businesses and would rather give that income to actual sailors living the dream on the water.
