    My dad flew for Piedmont for 38 years. I was fortunate to fly on all their planes ending up with the 737. I was married and lost my class c pass. My dad was a wonderful pilot and loved Piedmont until it was sold to US Air. He then retired, unable to cooperate with all of their changes. He flew the 767 which was his final plane. I loved Piedmont and all the people associated with it. As a child, I was able to sit on Mr Davis lap! It was so open and friendly. Unfortunately, it’s not the same flying anymore. No respect in the business.

      My dad started with them in '47 if I recall correctly. He also chose to retire when US Air took control. He was a station manager.

      Though the dress was circa 1958, I noticed that the men were in suits and the ladies is stylish dresses. Good luck seeing much of that in 2023. I worked for PI in ATL for a couple years in the mid 60's and really enjoyed my time there. Never did sit on Tom Davis' lap!! I have often wondered if a good many of the great PI cockpit crews stuck around due to the 'culture change' by US.

      As my father was getting into his mid 50s everyone in the family was worried what he would do when he turned 60 and they told him he couldn’t fly any more. Then USAir came along and he retired six months early. He flew the Martin 404, Fairchild F-27 & 227, YS-11, 727 and 737.

    Oh, my gosh -- thank you so much for posting this, it was like stepping back in time. Piedmont was about the only airline that flew to remote parts of the southeast. Did anyone else notice how trim just about everyone looked back then? The baggage crew looked athletic, they got a good upper body workout every time a plane landed or took off! This video is just plain awesome. Thanks again.

    Besides being an absolutely fantastic video, it is also very historic. They took the F-27 out to Denver with the hopes of selling them to Frontier, thus the footage from Stapleton, the name of the DEN airport at the time. Piedmont didn’t fly to any area except the south and southeast so it was quite the journey. This plane and the FH227 were my favorite airplanes of all time. As a kid, being able to sit at one of those huge windows AND watching the gear retract and extend was a thrill.

    Thank you so much for these wonderful films. My father flew for Piedmont from 1953 to 1973. He flew the M404, FH227 and YS11. I grew up in W-S. Dad was based in ILM, DCA, ROA, and ATL. Today I teach flying in the mid Atlantic and have the opportunity to fly into some of the airports he use to serve when flying for Piedmont. Precious memories

    My Dad started with Piedmont in 1966 in Roanoke in operations. And retired in 1993 with US Air. I grew up with the fh227 YS- 11 and 737. Remember the Martin 404 but I was very young. It was being retired by then . My Aunt his sister flew for Piedmont as a F/A in the mid 60s. I started with Piedmont/Us airways Express in 2005-2019 as a F/A and retired when they Became American Eagle. This is great footage. Thank you for sharing.

    I never expected to see the Lynchburg, Va., LYH, old terminal building and that long flight of stairs down to the tarmac and planes. My first commercial flight was around 1954 from that terminal on a Piedmont DC-3. I was in 7th Heaven at 11 years old . A few years later it was the F-27 and even later the FH-227. By this time in the early 1960s there was a new round terminal building at field level. Years later there was another new terminal building across the airport, closer to Rt, 29. Alas, Piedmont was no more.

    Wow! Amazing! Thank you very much! Greetings from Norway. The F-27 was a work horse on the trunk routes in the 60s. Pax volume grew so fast that from a 40 seat plane in 1964, they were replaced by the 737 in 1974, with a 124 seats. Other routes was flown by the F-28 with 65 seats.

    The first airport was Roanoke , Va. I was there with my dad when the first F-27 landed in Roanoke. I can still smell the kerosene. In 1958 in Roanoke Piedmont used DC-3s, Eastern Martin 404s and American Convair 240s. When the F-27 was added, it was the first turboprop I had seen.

    Way cool…my dad was station manager for cargo ops in ATL and worked there from 1966-1989…took an early retirement b/c he lost seniority when they brought in all the USAir people shaking things up, now USAir isn’t even around anymore. I got to travel om the DC-3’s when I was a tot…and the rest of the fleet:727 - 737 - Fokker F100 - Boeing 767/200 ER and we traveled on “standby”. We got to travel the WORLD using Piedmont as a gateway to LaGuardia/JFK and from there the world! LOVED Piedmont airlines!! I hear they have been revived as an AA commuter airline? Good luck…will NEVER be in its glory days again!

    • @airpiedmont
      @airpiedmont  Год назад

      Great memories. You are correct but it has been revived in name only. It is American's commuter carrier and the former Henson Airlines which Piedmont actually purchased in the 1980s. When the sale to USAir went through, the name and logo went with it. That's how it was obtained by American.

    I absolutely love this!! The Fairchild F27 is great! ! Altho I'm partial to its bigger brother, the FH-227 which Piedmont traded their F-27s in for. The only thing that's missing here is sound. Would love to see some Piedmont FH-227B footage if it exists.

    I can't even imagine trying to sell a line-guy on the idea of refueling an F27 or FH227 these days. I doubt if OSHA would even let them attempt it. Climbing up over the wings to get to the fuel caps? No way would it fly today. The later model airplanes which had single-point ground fueling were fine though.

    This is an awesome video! Thank you so much for sharing this. What a piece of Piedmont history! I love the detail and angles of the video. Really nice job. I recognize Roanoke Woodrum Field. I would like to know the second airport pictured. I want to guess TRI Tri-Cities (Bristol, Johnson City, Kingsport, TN). Definitely Denver Stapleton as the other airport, probably during a nation tour as DEN was not a Piedmont city at the time of this video. It was served much later in Piedmont's history. Loved the way people dressed back then. Such class and respect.
    Thanks again for the PI memories!!

    • @airpiedmont
      @airpiedmont  5 лет назад

      Thanks so much for watching and for commenting. The second airport is the old Lynchburg terminal. And yes, that is Denver Stapleton. The footage shot at DEN was when the manufacturer was pushing Frontier to buy the F-27 as the replacement for their aging fleet. They opted for the Convair 580, instead.

    • @demartin5366
      @demartin5366 5 лет назад +2

      @@airpiedmont Thanks for the information about the second airport being LYH. How interesting that the terminal was up on a hill, amazing. I've always wanted to see the Piedmont aircraft parked at the old terminals, back when terminals were unique and reflected the personalities of their communities. Now terminals are so generic. I think that the SDF Lee Terminal and ROA Woodrum Field terminal had the same architect, also the original Charlotte Douglas terminal looked a lot like ROA and SDF. This video is simply the greatest. I flew Piedmont many times. Flew in a YS-11 from DCA to CRW via ROA back in 1981. My first PI flight however was a 737-200 from CLT to SDF with a stop at TRI. in August of 1979. Piedmont was my favorite local service carrier as they flew such unique aircraft like the Martin 404s, F-27s and FH-227Bs, as well as the YS-11s and of course the 737 200s and 727 200s. What a rich and productive history they had when they were themselves. Oh how times have changed.

      @@demartin5366 The times have certainly changed. If you're on Facebook, the official Piedmont page is JetPiedmont. Check it out and click on the photos section. You'll see a ton of pictures from older terminals like INT where Piedmont was based. Again, thanks for watching and commenting.

      Hi Captain. You're correct. PI didn't begin service to DEN until 1978. The footage shot at DEN was when the manufacturer was pushing Frontier to buy the F-27 as the replacement for their aging fleet. They opted for the Convair 580, instead. There are also some great still shots of the PI F-27 out there with some Frontier planes.

    WHY WOULD ANYBODY with an ounce of appreciation for aesthetics change such an elegant and complimenting color scheme to the current dull and boring paint job? I wanna cry ...

    • @airpiedmont
      @airpiedmont  4 года назад

      It was a great color scheme and logo. Piedmont changed their look in 1974 and it lasted until the airline ceased operations in 1989 and was absorbed into USAir.

      I quite agree! Love the darker blue and the stylized speed lines. Obviously, the later scheme was easier to paint and, therefore, less expensive. BUT, can you imagine the earlier scheme on one of their 767s?
