Metal Shaping. How-To Use Cheap Tools To Build A Complicated Patch Panel.

- Hello! Today we are back on the 1936 Chevy Truck. In this video I am building a patch panel for the fender, so I'll be covering the entire process from start to finish. We will begin by making a pattern, then move into shaping the metal using a variety of home made and cheap tools that are readily available to the average hobbyist.

Please show it all. I'm learning quite a bit by watching
As a kid, all I ever wanted to be was an Auto Body Fender man, but, NO, I just had to go to college instead. So, after EIGHT years in college, I got a master's degree in Russian language and entered the Army as an Intelligence Officer. I got stuck there for twenty five years and finally retired. I'm now 65 years old, fully retired and NOW, I wanna' be an Auto Body Fender man!!!! Your video is incredible and I am determined to buy a hammer and dolly set and an English Wheel and start smashing my fingers. Thanks so much for your incredible video!
Oscar Wilde said “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", you are the best traditional bodyman on YT by far, so forget the Facebook guys even exist.
The two paper templates to determine stretching is invaluable. Thanks.
Thanks, it definitely makes the repairs go easier
I've done it with layers of masking tape but this part is excellent no matter how he got there. The 'imposter' thing has to be most frustrating. What next?
Would absolutely like to see how you go about finishing this off. Specifically the wire and the folded lip. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Thanks for watching, I'll try to make a video on the rest of the repair
Agreed
The quality of the knowledge that this craftsman dispenses is invaluable. Hope everyone who watches this channel realises this. Thank you so very much Mr Carter for sharing your trade secrets with the world. It is very much appreciated!
That's very kind of you to say! Thanks so much for watching!
A bit late to the party on this one but I just wanted to thank you. The 2 templates to determine your approach is genius. As is reading the overlaps in the paper. Never seen it explained so well. Cheers, enlightened.
you are a true craftsman who learned through trial an error over the years well done,in a league all your own.
Sad to hear a out the imposter problem. Please do show the welding in of the repair panel, wire edging and planishing: I really enjoy seeing the end result of repairs. Best wishes.
Thanks George, I'm glad you enjoy it!
Non-Lithium drill.. The mark of a true rebel. Kudos on the Cut an' Tuck panel patterns.
Someone's got to push back against the tyranny of lithium drills
Magical, how a flat piece of metal turns into a curved piece of art. Bravo.
Thank you!
Every time I start to gain confidence with my fabricating abilities I watch a video like this and realize how unskilled I truly am lol. Thank you for showing us how a true craftsman works!
THOSE KITTIES ARE DEFINENTLY CHILLIN !!
KEEP THE PICS OF THOSE LITTLE MUCHKINS COMMING SO WE KNOW THEY ARE PART OF THE VIDEO REPAIRS.
Lots more cat content to come!
I never thought I'd be entertained by bodywork. You, sir, are a true craftsman.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ha ha, the Log Driver's Waltz is a classic!! I loved the explanation of "how long does it take", well said. Very cool how well that tucking fork works, simple and effective.
Never would have thought about the fact that shaping from one side or the others would make a difference. Your explanation was both eye opening and concise.
Only have ever had RUclips to find what I like to watch. I have no need for other types of social media. 👍🙂
Right on, thanks for watching!
Yes I would love to see you complete this repair!😊
Will do!
Never too far gone, I've watched you do it.
Never say never. Haha!
Love seeing people restore old cars
Thanks for watching!
We want to see everything! Can’t get enough of your talent.
You are a magician, that patch looks great.
Thanks Bob!
The patch turned out excellent. I really like your "don't rush" approach. It's uncommon to find that kind of patience these days.
Thank you! I still struggle with having patience most days
Yes, please continue on with the wire edge, welding and finishing.
Ok will do!
Nothing short of amazing. I have to slow down and relax!
That was one of the best tutorials I have seen you do! Thanks. KANK😎
Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful!
Excellent fabrication and craftsmanship... greetings from the UK.
Thank you!
I'm still partial to the turn the fender into one giant weld look. It's authentic farmer. That was cool to see that piece of metal coming into shape. I was listening to Verdi's Anvil Chorus. Now I'll have that in my head the rest of the day thank you very much. Thank you for a great video. Cheers!
Thanks Heather! Now that this fender has been ruined, I'm keeping an eye out for an authentic farm weld fender to replace it.
Thank you so much for sharing your cornucopia of valuable knowledge. Your well explained tutorials make for an enjoyable learning experience. I hope you do a second half showing the weld in process
Yes, I would like to see the entire job completed and in fact, the entire car till it is road worthy.
At least you got the Bondo part right. Slop it on over 86-year old paint. Saves time, grinding discs and I`ve seen it done a hundred times on RUclips. English Wheel In A Can.
Haha yeah I'm finally learning from my youtube mentors
@@CarterAutoRestyling Ah, Grasshopper. You have a great future behind you.
Good stuff once again, thanks for the social media rant I totally agree!!
Haha glad you agree!
Great patience on your part. That is a fine patch. Would like to see the finished techniques. Always a beautiful finished product on your channel.
Thanks Norman!
Definitely want to see you finish the fender. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Beautiful work. Love your sense of humor and cat footage too.
I enjoy your tutorials and the way you explain the "why" to the reasons
Glad to hear you enjoy them!
Great video please share the rest of the repair.
Thanks Ken, will do!
Your video production is improving Kyle. Your quips and sense of humor is coming through. I appreciate how you speed up for the repetitive areas - and your voice-work is more focused and to the point.
Thank you!
I am looking forward to see you weld the patch in, and show the final finishing work!
Great tutioral and spot on with your rant!
Thanks!
They said it couldn't be done,
With a smile he said he knew it,
But he tackled that thing that couldn't be done,
And he couldn't do it!
Except you did and it was very interesting and educational! Excellent!
Haha awesome, thanks!
You bet all information is appreciated. Everyone does things differently so seeing a different process is a good thing.
Yes would definitely love to see the patch welded in place and finished.
Excellent patch ... master job ... and yes I would like more content on finishing the fender ... I'd probibly try to use your videos to make a buck but I couldn't replicate your dry sense of humor ... keep makin em and I'll keep watchin them ...
Thanks Joe!
Very nice!
I love seeing oldschool metal workers!
Not many of us around today!
Thank you!
Please finish the finder I love the work you are a true master hands down.
I would definitely like to see you weld the panel In and all that goes with it. Thanks for another great video!
Yeah, it takes as long as it takes. Fully realizing that what you've done so far on this fender can burn a guy out, I'd love to see the weld-in and finish when you get around to it. Great video, as always, thanks!
Thanks , I'll be sure to film the rest of it when the time comes!
Nice work, very helpful commentary.
Glad you found it helpful!
Yes please! I would love to see the process of completing this! I’m glad you took the time to show both templates! Great tip!👍
Thanks, I'll try to film the rest!
You're a god amongst insects ☝ 👍👍👍
Haha more like an insect among gods
Great video, like black magic to me! Like to see the panel finished
Thanks!
That is a lot of work...good on you for the patience and skill...
Thank you!
Love the commentary on Facebook and Instagram 👍
Excellent intro on how to decide on where to shrink.
Mike in Germany
If cheap tools are the secret, I’m sure to be forming complex metal shapes in no time. Nope. I hope to see the patch placed in the fender. Your work is appreciated.
you are very skilled and good at explaining
You Sir are a great character quite unique and I appreciate your RUclips Work AND a Master Craftsman .
Killer work with simple tools ! Great video 👊
Thanks Karl! I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
The Log Driver Waltz is fantastic! I always enjoy me some good log rhythms.
Haha right on!
I can't believe Allan would do that, on Facebook he said Poe had stolen his chair AND his Xbox! Great video Kyle, another teaching lesson on fabrication absorbed into my neuro-matrix pushing something else out of the way. I hadn't known about the comparative paper pattern method to find the path of least resistance. Thanks man!
Yeah build the tool weld it in. Go the full hog. Absolutely beautiful work Kyle. What a fantastic set of skills you have.
Good for you on social media left alone, never had it never will . Ecellent job on that fender patch , would love to see ya finish it , thanks for posting it ....
Thanks for watching!
You’re an amazing man. I’ve seen some bondo magic but your skills are mind blowing
Thank you!
As always, a great display of metal work and logical sequencing of how to do this! love watching your work and hearing the "how and why." I admire your affinity with your craft and your talent. I would enjoy seeing the continued process.
Thank you Brian!
Just watching this for the 2nd time today. 10/10 would watch again. cheers.
Thanks for watching twice!!!
Let’s Finnish the fender welding. Nice.
It will be nice to see the rest of this job done. Here in Ontario we don't worry too much about dents because, well, Ontario and the roads are made of salt all winter so by the time the dents get too much the vehicle is well on it's way to returning to it's natural state any way.
Oh yea! Let us all see it come together!
Please let's see more . You are a true metal master .
Great video would love to see you weld the panel in and see how you do the wire in the back. Keep up the great work 👍
Always like the metal shaping process, especially the fine tuning at the last.
I just did almost the exact repair on my Model A fender. Nice work.
That's great, I love Model A's!
thank you for taking the time for us!!
Would love to see you finish it out.
Amazing chief! Bring on the weld in vid. Great stuff
Excellent craftsmanship and great explanation of your process! I’m definitely learning. Please follow up with the rest of the repair. Thanks!
Definitely want to see the rest of the repair!
Your teaching ability is very inspiring.
Thanks, I'll be sure to film the rest!
@Carter Auto Restyling recently watch Wray Schelin make nearly the same repair to I think a 34 Ford fender. He used only masking tape for his pattern. Your method with the cuts in the paper made perfect sense.
Like the other comment I'm looking forward to seeing how you deal with the wire. Until his video I didn't even know that was a thing. I've been getting a lot out of your channel. You break things into their simplest pieces where even a rookie can grasp the concepts. I'm looking forward to ruining some steel because the next step in learning it is to try it.
Amazing work, as always! Very happy to see that the cats really like the NASCAR blanket!
Wow, really got a lot out of that. Probably going to be loosing sleep waiting for the Wire edge procedure.(not kidding). Sorry to hear about your grief, hope it doesn't get you down. And AGAIN ! (someone makes it bad for everyone) Thank You. Keep on Tucking.
Wow , I had no idea what it took to shape that ,, great episode information
Thanks for watching!
Amazing. Every time I watch! Thank you Kyle!!!
All I can say is I am impressed and learned a lot. I am glad my 36 chevy grain truck is going to stay original and that my 37 half ton had good bones and was bought already restored.👍
So sorry to hear about your despair, Thanks so much for your knowledge and wit. Keep up the good work!
I'm glad you speed up the video of all your hard work and I learned a lot from your hard work and love the fact your saving these great Joys, Thumbs Up again and hopefully many more?...
Excellent job Kyle Can’t wait to see part too
Thanks John!
Good work, nicely explained , those who aren't as smart as us, will benefit greatly i'm sure.
Once again. Excellent work and teaching. I look forward to the next video. I'll enjoy watching you going forward. Rich from NJ in the USA.
Thanks Rich!
I won't be able to sleep until you get it welded in. (No pressure) Really enjoying your work. The trolls on FB and InstaG are a sad comment on our society.
I noticed a couple shrinker stretcher's I hadn't seen before in the shop, nice addition. Would be great to see you weld in that panel and finish it off. Thanks for the inspiration to can the Bondo and shoot for metal finishing.
Thanks Paul, I'll try to film the rest of the repair for everyone
VERY good info about the 2 pattern approach! Pretty sure that's the first time I've seen or heard of it.
The patch panel turned out wonderful and I concur with others which would enjoy seeing the next steps to the repair.
Highly educational content sir.
Thanks Russ, I don't know if the two pattern approach is "right" or not, but it works for me
That patch looks great. I was amazed to see it take shape. Learned something new with the paper mold. Made all the sense in the world. I would love to see it being grafted into the fender. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks for the great videos. I remember watching "Kustom" make the shrinking forks but wasn't sure how it worked. Now I do :) I didn't understand the templates until your explanation and watching you work with them. Great! Twitter, I Instagram tiktok and whatever are the death of our way of life!:(
Thank you!
I really have to say , I enjoyed this video… nice patch repair !
❤ to see you to weld the fender 😊
Don't understand how people think this takes such a long time, I watch the video twice and it took you 36 minutes both times, I'm thinking another 15 to cut and weld it in and you'll be done. Looking forward to seeing how well you finish it up.😅
This is perfect! I have a '33 Chevy that the drivers fender looks like this one did! Thank you for the ideas!
Thank you for educating and entertaining us.
Another quality repair
Thank you for post. Would definitely love to see the next installment. I’m with you on the Facebook nightmare
Nice repair. I've got the same English wheel and I got tired of all the flexing so I braced the entire C section also welded up the lower wheel holder and a friend machined it to the right inside dimension so the lower wheels would stop bouncing around
Yeah that would definitely help a lot!
