  • This is the only way you can get to Rowardennan, at the foot of Ben Lomond, by public transport. Leaving from Tarbert pier, our little ferry takes us for a 40-minute journey to Rowardennan, where you can relax, eat and drink, or climb Ben Lomond. You have 7-8 hours to enjoy Loch Lomond's eastern shore, and then return back to Tarbert. This adventure is operated by Cruise Loch Lomond.

Nice to see you back in the country named after you Scott. Some nice weather there as well, not what I'm seeing out my window right now. Will need to give this a go sometime.

Great video but I'm old enough to remember travelling the length of the Loch from Balloch to Inversnaid on the Paddle Steamer Maid of the Loch - fresh Salmon for lunch in the opulent dining saloon followed by a pint in the snug tartan bedecked lounge bar - not that I'm knocking Cruise Loch Lomond!😀

Hi Scott, a lovely video that really brought this area alive to me. About a month ago, my son returned from a three week trip to Scotland and England which included hiking the West Highland Way. He ended up being seriously delayed on the trail due to the weather; and he ended up stranded at the Rowardennan Youth Hostel for three, maybe even four nights. He certainly made good use of the hotel restaurant and bar!!! The forecast was not good for continuing the hike, so he decided to book a ticket on the ferry to Tarbert and then catch public transport up towards Fort William. Fortunately, the next day saw a slight improvement in the weather, so he elected to forfeit the ticket and continue hiking and was able to complete the hike in the end. That was a real achievement for him!!! Yes, he missed the ferry trip - and hopefully he can join me on a future trip that would include that ferry ride, as I doubt that I could do the complete trail anymore. Cheers, Ian

For the avoidance of any possible confusion, this gentleman means TARBET not TARBERT. There are 2 Tarberts in Scotland, neither of which particularly close to Tarbet, or on Loch Lomond. The nearest is in Argyll, where I live and is a beautiful fishing village on the west coast. I’d recommend Scott has a swing past there too, lovely drive over the Rest and be Thankful and through the wonderful scenery of Argyll.

Funny, I was just there yesterday! I did Sweeney's from Balloch though as it was the easiest to get to by train from Glasgow. This looks like a slightly nicer journey though.

I love a sail on the Loch. My favourites are the ones that go round the islands just south of Luss. If you've never visited the island of Inchcailloch I would recommend that - you can sail from Balmaha or Luss in the summer months - best time is when the bluebells are in full bloom. Last time I did the route you did here was a few months back when I walked from Balmaha to Rowardennan on a whim, was nice to get a rest on the sail over to catch the bus at Tarbet. I last climbed Ben Lomond about 12 or 13 years ago, but I'll be doing it again this year coming. I can see it clear as a bell from my house and feel I ought to try and do it at least once a year.
