Thank you for confirming this is a great buy. What you miss is that most of us who can pay cash for this car is, well, a bit older. We grew up with mechanical things and love it. And thats the market they are targeting. Well done Toyota!
This vehicle will still run fairly smoothly for the next 20 to 30 years. It’s for people who want something that doesn’t go wrong at all. Even if something goes wrong, one could easily find parts to fix the issue. I know the Chinese cars come with a lot of spec but I don’t even want to know the cost of replacing your big dual screens if something were to go wrong or if the aircon is not working because of the screens. Toyota basically installs all the tried and tested parts on this vehicle so that very little stuff goes wrong. And 95% of South Africans aren’t it’s target market and Toyota is fine with that.
On luxury: If you want the comforts you can get it in a bakkie/SUV for the same price. It's specifically left out because it's adding complicated electronics to the vehicle creates failure points that you really don't want in critical situations. On price: Considering the current market where a little shitty EcoSport replacement costs R600k and a new 1,5L Honda CR-V also costs you over R1mil, Toyota has only marginally increased the price of the new model while other car makers double it making it prices very well comparatively. And like art, a car's price is subjective. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it... and nothing holds its value like a Land Cruiser... and that inherently adds to the value of the car. Now on price + level of luxury: I agree, they could at least offer some creature comforts for the people that want them. Because like the Jimny, people don't use them for what they are intended and I believe it's an oversight from Toyota to not at least offer luxuries for the slice of the market that just buys it for the status. In conclusion, the majority of these cars rightfully gets used in very rough/dangerous conditions(like farming in SA which is extremely dangerous, where even if you evade all the people trying to murder you... you still don't want to get caught next to the side of the road in the middle of the night with no reception because your car went into limp mode due the the passenger's massaging seats malfunctioning). And the Land Cruiser is not known for luxury, unlike the German brands who will give you an extremely basic "luxury" car also for R1mil if you don't specify any options... which is ultimately a more heinous crime.
To put it in a nutshell (about V8 version): 1. This car is made of solid steel with a beast under the bonnet, not from puffy plastic with an overturned mosquito instead of an engine. 2. This car is designed for true men and real women who are strong and classy, not for anyone in between painted in rainbow colours. 3. This car is not for those who call a trip from home to the shopping mall an “adventure tour.” 4. This car is not for those who are guided by temporary trends and fashion, but rather for those who guide others or have an independent mindset. 5. This car is designed and built for harsh and tough conditions, with an extremely huge reserve of durability and capability to do things that other cars can demonstrate only once in their lifetime under studio conditions. P.S. I’ve noticed one thing in my life-people criticize things that they cannot really afford or even know nothing about.
I love how it looks on the outside. If they modernized the interior and dropped the price by about R200k I'd buy this in a heartbeat, and the die hard ooms in Bela Bela can still have their expensive empty model.
@rudinorman6073 you're right! I have a 1996 GQ Nissan Patrol but it does have electric windows all round, and disc brakes front and back. Same switch gear up front though. Amazing that a vehicle built 28 years later has a similar level of spec.......!
Have a look at what older generation LC's go for on the second-hand market and the R1million price tag doesn't seem so bad anymore. There's a reason for the demand and there's a reason they hold their value. This LC will still be going strong (and be in style) 20 years from now.
It's already not in style today, even 20 years ago it was not in style. People should stop deceiving themselves because they were bamboozled 1million by a dealership that their car is automatically stylish.
It’s also a myth that the Landcruiser is indestructible, my experience was that the gears in the diff and non helical gears of the gearbox then are susceptible to constant highway speed
Clearly not a fan but at least you're honest about it. They come into their own when you're actually out there using them for the intended purpose regularly. Then there's just no competition.
There’s absolutely nothing missing from this Cruiser (except maybe a manual transmission). If you want comfort and tech, buy something German. The fact this cruiser doesn’t have it is what makes it a Land Cruiser. It doesn’t need to be “excused”. This car is built to run on nothing for a million km’s. That’s the entire point. People need to stop trying to get Toyota to water it down and turn it into every other SUV on the market. If you need your backside massaged, the cruiser isn’t for you
I think the climate controls done like that are great. There was nothing wrong with controlling them like that for decades! When there is no electric motors in useless places, it's much less to go wrong. And I say this as an electrical / electronics engineer myself. Electronics are really nice and electricity is a great invention, but nowadays they are used a lot in places where you don't really need them. The explosion of complexity is making cars less and less maintainable all the time. A fancy LED / LASER / projector etc. light in a car costs thousands to replace once it doesn't work. Compare that to the old price of a bulb, or even a xenon light is still an order of magnitude cheaper to fix. None of the now new fancy cars will be on the road after 15 years.
Even though this car is cheaper, the G-Wagon is meant to be a luxury. It's a part of the Mercedes brand. The LC250 is supposed to be more affordable but the lack of features makes it feel like a rip off.
I hope they build these for a long time , old school ,i hate a cellphone don, t want one with wheels. The last era of front solid axle , Great resale value.
While I totally agree that the price is extremely difficult to justify, I believe the reason for the massive lack of features is on purpose because of the conditions that these cars drive. If someone drives deep into the bush, the car is intended to not rely on electric components as much as possible which makes the car very reliable and easier to fix with little access to technical support, which I agree with. I don't mind the lack of features but the price is insane
Finally, an honest South African Motoring journalist. The rest of you should ashamed of calling crap cars good, and not to mention prices in S.A. are absolutely ridiculous. 42% of every new cars price, is Tax to our non existent Government
I honestly think that ... somehow we are not the targeted market for this one. I think for the first time, Toyota is targeting someone who could be living in Yemen or Sudan or somewhere in the Middle East and happens to own an Anti Aircraft Machine gun and need to mount it onto something "modern". We just happen to be middle man ... I don't know🤔🤷🏾♂️
On top of that heavy price tag, the whole rear axle needs to be replaced because they say that its about 50mm narrower than the front because of that big V8 that they had to make room for which makes it fishtail when driving on sand
As a Land Cruiser fanatic speaking for many land cruiser fans….Please don’t turn it into a Hilux, toyota can leave it just the way it is!! Thats the way we want it to be.
In the UAE, Japan, Down-Under and a few other countries Toyota specs the 70-series with a much better infotainment system, steering controls, new cluster with more detailed trip computer, new head lights with daytime lights, adaptive cruise control, emergency brake assist and lane departure warning (or lane keep assist, not sure which one). It’s funny how Toyota SA thinks that the SA consumer is not worthy of these long overdue upgrades on a R1m vehicle…
Dude, I've been driving cruisers for 20 years. I get it that u don't like it, but I love my new 2.8 auto 76. If u want luxury, go buy a vx fortuner. This car is for cruiser afficionado s, it's to cater for a specific kind of buyer, for a niche market so to speak. The less electronic stuff there is, the less there is to break! I don't agree with ur opinion, I bought mine as an everyday driver, fuel consumption is 8km/l, performance adequate, suspension is great after fitting DCS. So u do u, us cruiser owners will do us. Cheers!
For those who want to travel from Cape Town to Cairo, then yes this vehicle is great. This is a great example of how OEM’s are ripping off their customers offering a vehicle from the 70’s for the same amount of money that would actually buy me a vehicle which has benefited from years of R&D. I’m with you, this vehicle should cost the same as a Picanto…
I find it interesting that the price for the new 76 is almost 2.8 times more expensive than the 76 we bought in 2012. Poor exchange rate and dealership prices not being regulated is probably big contributers. But you can watch how toyota prices increase each quarter.
What people fail to understand, just like the presenter has, is that this vehicle is not meant to be comfortable and have creature comforts. The 70 series is a vehicle that will take you from Cape Town to Cairo, across any terrain, and bring you back with minimal if not no issues. The drivetrain is indestructible and the motor is too (1HZ being the best bet). The UN and other NGOs deep in Africa appreciate this vehicle for what it is. This is an overlanders dream
Good review as always, what makes this vehicle expensive especially 4.5 was that it doesn't share components with other Toyota vehicles, and the plant maintenance where they make it is expensive to repair those old equipments. Other things that makes them expensive is that they are being used by most mining industry, even underground mining they are there. Sometimes we even shortage of spares availability in the mining industry
I love that this car is still being manufactured. It’s actually incredible they still do. For a 4x4 enthusiast with all new cars having soo much tech in , this is the only one left that is “built like the used it “.
I think some of the Toyota Fans may miss the point here. This is a good vehicle, and it does what it says on the box. Nobody is arguing that. But R1 million.... That's the argument. You are paying about $450k just for your brand loyalty.
I went for a look at the Australian version of the 70 and we have electric mirrors , cruise control and some other steering wheel controls. $90 000 Australian dollars which the exchange that I can find is cheaper than yours? I think.
Because people like me wants car like that i don't want more electric thing, the way it is makes it the best reliable car, i would choose that car over any other luxury car. I am happy toyota still make it the way it is and i would love to see it prodused like that in the future
Hardened Land Cruiser operators will scoff at your opinion and still buy this. I know a farmer who’s been driving LC’s since 1976 - he’s currently driving a V8 pick up on the farm as well as a 300 series GXR. Trades in his 79 on a new one every 3 years
I understand what they trying to do by keeping ALL of the bits and pieces that made a Land Cruiser, but I feel a few features for comfort and appeal would still be appreciated by its target market. They could have used the UK’s Land Cruiser Ultimate or the Hilux as a base on for what small comfort features could they incorporate
I like the idea of some cars still being more basic if you literally want the functionality and that's it you should be able to get it and not have to pay for things that are unnecessary to you (without being a "cheap/bad" car) but this is just badge pricing. I still really like the new look, not on the 79, it doesn't work, but I think it looks awesome on the 76
I saw a review of this new one with electrical mirrors, steering controls, lane keeping assistance and day time running lights. So, i bet those extras will come in SA but that will just take a year or so for us to get it.. It’s painful to buy an expensive car with everything but reliability. Rather buy this tank knowing I’m good Beautiful car!!!
I fully agree with you at least they should’ve put the latest interior only one reason why this car is so expensive Toyota is trying to bring a vintage car if vintage is this costing it’s better if I pay that 1 million for a secondhand Toyota Land Cruise 2023
This car is worth it's price tag.... most of customers who buys cars half it's price, will visit dealerships hundred times while this one you only visit fuel station
The TANK seems like even a better deal now. Sure, it has it's draw-backs, but in 3 to 5 years, it will be on par. The Jeep Gladiator is a much better buy at this price.
Its a slap in the face how basic these cars are. The 1 Mil is not the problem. What you get for the money is the problem. The age old argument about reliability also isnt valid anymore. Lets be honest. If you can afford a 1M+ car, you really dont need to drive it until the wheels comes off! Most buyers will sell it after a couple of years. What they do great in is resale valvue. No other car holds value like a cruiser.
the best combination for the landcruiser is the v8 with autobox. i deliverd a few of those and they drive like a dream. the v8 with manual is so slow and lazy and has non existing fuel consumptiom.
This will be a bit hit with the Hi-Jackers, the drivetrain components can be used elsewhere across sub-Saharan Africa, unlike the V8 version that it replaces.
What do you think makes the Land Cruiser so popular in SA and would you pay R1 million for the new auto version?

enthusiasts appreciate this new offering as it is to the most part, the application of this product is still industrious and does offer a decent level of comfort and owners of these cars take pride in customising them to their own unique application.
Thank you for confirming this is a great buy. What you miss is that most of us who can pay cash for this car is, well, a bit older. We grew up with mechanical things and love it. And thats the market they are targeting. Well done Toyota!
I love that you are being honest.
Most journalists are to scared to
This vehicle will still run fairly smoothly for the next 20 to 30 years.
On luxury:
If you want the comforts you can get it in a bakkie/SUV for the same price. It's specifically left out because it's adding complicated electronics to the vehicle creates failure points that you really don't want in critical situations.
On price:
Considering the current market where a little shitty EcoSport replacement costs R600k and a new 1,5L Honda CR-V also costs you over R1mil, Toyota has only marginally increased the price of the new model while other car makers double it making it prices very well comparatively.
And like art, a car's price is subjective. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it... and nothing holds its value like a Land Cruiser... and that inherently adds to the value of the car.
Now on price + level of luxury:
I agree, they could at least offer some creature comforts for the people that want them.
@carscoza
@CiroDeSiena
World class Journo
Give it to me with same tech spec as the Aussie released version and I would buy one!
Toyota SA always screws us, it'll come out with spec change..
And then it will cost 1.2 mil
I would love to see the Land Cruiser 70 evolve the same way that the G wagon evolved
Exactly still rugged but has all the comfort features
Yep
The ford bronco too
But it would be less reliable because of all the new electronics
@@douglasbullet6456 The G Wagon is very reliable despite it's high price. Whistlingdiesel proved that.
Thank you for being so real and honest about everything. Love it.
To put it in a nutshell (about V8 version):
1. This car is made of solid steel with a beast under the bonnet, not from puffy plastic with an overturned mosquito instead of an engine.
2. This car is designed for true men and real women who are strong and classy, not for anyone in between painted in rainbow colours.
3. This car is not for those who call a trip from home to the shopping mall an “adventure tour.”
It is met for daily luxury but accessing war zones, food relief, disaster management services. But I get your concern and everyone else born in luxury
Agree 100% with you on this one. Brand loyalty is a strange thing. The profit on one of these must be substancial.
Most of us love this vehicle. It's the price we don't afford. What a cool basic offroad vehicle. ❤
I love how it looks on the outside. If they modernized the interior and dropped the price by about R200k I'd buy this in a heartbeat, and the die hard ooms in Bela Bela can still have their expensive empty model.
Looks like a 1999 nissan patrol
Looks no way close to a GU Patrol.... rather a GQ. 😉
@madcat4563 even worse then😂
@rudinorman6073 you're right!
That "reason" is unconditional brand loyalty and nothing more. A Mahindra Pik-up is just as reliable, more modern and a 3rd the price.
We land cruiser owners don’t want a lot of electronic crap on our 4x4. This is perfect.
Except the price. R450k at most. Times are a changing
I drive an old school landy and I absolutely agree with you 199 percent.
Clearly not a fan but at least you're honest about it.
They come into their own when you're actually out there using them for the intended purpose regularly. Then there's just no competition.
No competition except for a Mahindra Pik-up which is a 3rd the price.
If you need your backside massaged, the cruiser isn’t for you
It reminds me of the interior of the venture we had growing up
I think the climate controls done like that are great.
G wagon has maintained the boxy shape on the outside but when you get on the inside you are welcomed by all the future tech and comfort
The last era of front solid axle ,
Great resale value.
If you add the creature comforts, then it essentially becomes a prado. The price is driven by demand
Love this truck. I am for safety, absolute reliability, a one car for next 41 years.
I'm sure the 76 in the name is a reference to 1976. I remember seeing those same door locks and other bits in my father's 1979 Corolla in 1979.
Finally, an honest South African Motoring journalist. The rest of you should ashamed of calling crap cars good, and not to mention prices in S.A. are absolutely ridiculous. 42% of every new cars price, is Tax to our non existent Government
This is the same thing as my venture
thats the beauty of it its authentic and its uses and only those who understand what a car should be will relate
This car is worth it honestly you will appreciate it when you go off road , ford rangers can’t even hold a candle against it
As a Land Cruiser fanatic speaking for many land cruiser fans….Please don’t turn it into a Hilux, toyota can leave it just the way it is!! Thats the way we want it to be.
Too late brother
Wouldn't pay more thank R400k for this. Rather spend my R1m on a Everest
This should have been called a Venture 2024😂😂😂😂😂😂
Its raw. Good for not breaking down when your far away in the bush. BUT PRICE= MENTAL !!!
One of the most underrated cars Nissan NP 300 ... For that million I'd rather go n get 3 Nissans
I couldn't agree more...NP300 off-road best car I have driven
9:58 and speaking of the Meneer (single cab), one of the Meneers from SAPS showed up in the background. Atleast it comes with Type C USB ports 😅
This review was really entertaining, thanks!
Lol
Did I see the check engine light at 3:31 point of your video, middle left of the screen? Engine light already, Ciro?
Those door handles remind me of those you got in an early 2000s Toyota Tazz
I love that this car is still being manufactured. It’s actually incredible they still do. For a 4x4 enthusiast with all new cars having soo much tech in , this is the only one left that is “built like the used it “.
❤i love it like this 😂,we in the Farms dirty roads,so this simple basics is fantastis ❤
This guy is telling pure truth ,I salute you brother, 1million car but with no electric windows,air-conditioning, central locking system
Trades in his 79 on a new one every 3 years
It's all about the name. It's not for everyone. It's for a specific target which don't want all the tech, but want the pedigree
Honestly speaking there’s a market for such simplicity, for some odd reason I kinda want it . Well I miss it too
That’s how many giant multinational corporations fell from the grace. Arrogance and being too confident and comfortable in the comfort zone.
We in the US have wait 25 year s to bring one these in. So the bright side is with no specs everything will still be working.;)
Great review. Fully agreed upon. So old old old. Cressida.
I like the idea of some cars still being more basic if you literally want the functionality and that's it you should be able to get it and not have to pay for things that are unnecessary to you (without being a "cheap/bad" car) but this is just badge pricing. I still really like the new look, not on the 79, it doesn't work, but I think it looks awesome on the 76
And that is why I will get this one as well.
Great review thanks
I saw a review of this new one with electrical mirrors, steering controls, lane keeping assistance and day time running lights. So, i bet those extras will come in SA but that will just take a year or so for us to get it..
It’s painful to buy an expensive car with everything but reliability. Rather buy this tank knowing I’m good
Beautiful car!!!
The retail price- granted they sell enough units- is helping to cover the R&D costs of future Toyota Space Cruisers...
I fully agree with you at least they should’ve put the latest interior only one reason why this car is so expensive Toyota is trying to bring a vintage car if vintage is this costing it’s better if I pay that
1 million for a secondhand Toyota Land Cruise 2023
This car is worth it's price tag.... most of customers who buys cars half it's price, will visit dealerships hundred times while this one you only visit fuel station
Glad you did the review, also we need a bakkie guy that tells the truth. Let's talk Dieselgate and Add Blue
Car of the year
The TANK seems like even a better deal now. Sure, it has it's draw-backs, but in 3 to 5 years, it will be on par.
The Jeep Gladiator is a much better buy at this price.
A fuel consumption reader is seldom accurate in my experience... best is to calculate it yourself, tank-to-tank
