Why The BLEACH Manga Is So Much Better Than The Anime

  • The BLEACH Manga is way better than the BLEACH Anime. The original BLEACH anime from 2004 is a very flawed adaptation of the manga. I'm going to journey back to 2006, when the first few dubbed episodes of BLEACH aired on Adult Swim in the US. The excitement of the Soul Society arc, the confusion during the filler Bount arc, and the relief felt when the story returned to canon, all contributed to a complex love for BLEACH. I’ll also be exploring the differences between the manga and anime, analyzing specific scenes involving characters like Orihime and Ichigo, and uncovering the depth and subtleties that got lost along the way.

OG Bleach may have been littered with filler arcs, poor pacing, censorship and poor characterization of certain characters, and yet however it still gave us the best art/animation, OST soundtracks, aesthetic style/drip and main story consistency out of any other long-running series, which was enough to put it on the mainstream anime map following DBZ right alongside Naruto as the Big3 dubbed ANIME.
Never forget that as it wouldn’t be as iconic and where it gloriously is today.

Also the anime had Uryu arguing with Pesche over the white clothing, and this part became a forshadowing meta humor where Uryu claimed "white is superior" and knowing now later his association in tybw with sternritters, it just fit so well as it also breaks the 4th wall which is truely genius comedy. Not many animes could pull such joke today knowing the context.

Also kind of liked how the Bount filler showed us a different side to Soifon and the Stealth Force with them displaying genuine comradeship and concern for each others safety, a far cry from Soifon's previous ruthless disregard. My headcanon is that Yoruichi had a stern talking to with her, teaching her that having true allies is far better than just expendable pawns.

  • @Prushinthespirit

No, generally anime didn't do badly.
Substitute Shinigami arc was solid and Soul Society arcs was awesomely adapted.
The first part of the Arrancar arc (before Fake Karakura fight starts) lets the anime down with quite an underwhelming (except some moments like Ikkaku or Grimmjo fight) animation, not so great direction and censorship.
    But it gets better afterwards.
While Fullbringer felt generally awesome to watch.
Fillers may have been annoying to manga readers when they were coming out. But now it's not much of a problem - newcomers can just skip them.

    • @WieldMyWord

Also the anime provided extra content and even an anime canon backstory for harribel (not needed, but atleast there is something). The anime also made certain scenes in the manga more creative like the uryu vs cirucci where the pillars actually resembles lipsticks in the anime (playing on underlying erotic theme). Uryu arguing with Pesche over the white clothing, became a forshadowing meta humor where Uryu claimed "white is superior" and knowing later his association in tybw with sternritters just fit so well as it also breaks the 4th wall which is truely genius comedy. Not many animes could pull such a joke today knowing the dog whistle behind it. The best thing is that people can choose either the manga or the anime up to Tybw and then switch to anime only as it seems the anime is better by providing really important stuff that was missing in the manga and even expanded on it.

I first got introduced to Bleach by the anime, a friend of a friend had all the current eps at the time on his ipod, so we loaded them onto my friends laptop and watched them all, I think it was only just near the end of the substitute shinigami arc.
I went on to download and watch wvery episode weekly, I only started reading the manga just after the SS arc finished.
After going back and reading the manga I cannot fathom why the anime staff made the decisions they did, there was no need to change Orihime like they did, and are the whole reason there’s the rukia v orihime ship arguement.
Either way, I watched the anime religiously, and was super disappointed when I found out the manga finished up, and that the anime stopped at the fullbring arc.

For me the pacing later was golden, nothing like todays anime when they just brush trough everything without a proper momentum, and let's not act like the TYBW adaptation doesn't cut shit, first cour aired and it already have tons of removed scenes from it from comedic to serious moments and character appearances, pages of content just disappeared. I couldn't stop laughting when they didn't even show a reiteitai squad throwing communication knives and they just appeared out of nowhere with a "zzzt" sound, wtf.
The only thing i didn't like back then was when they placed filler arcs, in crucial moments of the anime, some good shit was gonna happen BANG a filler arc, also most of them being pretty good, Reigai arc and Zanpakutou had some good story and fights in it.
Censorship depends on the time anime is aired, if it was later there probably wouldn't be any censorship, but i agree it was bad in some cases. Some cool moments was toned town, like Hiyori split in half, Luppi pierced trough or Tsukishima/Uryuu getting his whole arm arm cut.
You should always read the manga, even in the case of the newer adaptation, sometimes anime can add things sometimes it shows even less, and that's the case in both versions.

OG Anime didnt at all capture the essense of Kubo's work imo. They even made a few romantic hints between Ichigo and Rukia which was very misleading. They didnt at all handle Ichigo's character and his PTSD well in the Anime. Arrancar Saga was also a complete mess which dragged out many things unnecessarily that goes completely against Kubo's work considering Bleach is a Fast-Paced Manga . But all things considered,Soul Society Arc was adapted perfectly for its time and overall the OG series had some elite episodes as well ngl. Without the fillers,OG Anime was an 8/10 overall. On the other hand,TYBW only cut off some comedic scenes and other scenes that doesnt pose any importance to the story which actually helped to elevate the Atmosphere of the Arc. Considering it is Kubo himself who wanted that,i can see how it affected the Anime in a positive way. And at the same time, they added extra contents and expanded on scenes which are actually very important to the Story. And when it comes to Pacing, the only episode i had problem with was Episode 3 which had many plotlines all over the place. Other than that, the Pacing was perfect and completely goes well with Bleach. And considering the Arc is very heavy on fights, there is no need to unnecessarily drag things out. Kubo is a subtle writer afterall,he doesnt spoon-feed and rather want the audience to actually think and understand the Story. Thats what makes Bleach unique among other Shounen. The only thing i miss in the TYBW from the OG series is the Fight Choreography and Sakuga which i hope will be fixed in the Upcoming Episodes.

Yes its censored, and some creative licence was taken but its still Bleach at its core. Filter out the filler, and then when you inevitably want more bleach after finishing (or coming up to date) with the canon episodes, the fillers can be enjoyable stand alone stories - the zanpaktou arc and the reigei arc are standouts for me in terms of filler. This is a very subjective topic though overall, and its all based on personal opinion. :)

This is exactly the kind of video I needed to see. I watched the bleach anime a few months ago to get an idea of what the entire big three were like. Ive already watched naruto and one piece and I just needed to see bleach to find out for myself which was the best.
One of my most important needs to an anime or manga is that the characters are interesting and that ill grow to like them and become attached. Im going to purposefully not mention the other big 3 because it has no relevance in how I saw Bleach. For me I thought bleach was intriguing most of the time but it never held my attention. I went on a binge for about 3 weeks just grinding it out. I skipped all the filler so that I wouldnt get a skewed opinion on the source material. I realized once I caught up to the anime (which I believe is half way through thousand year blood war) I quickly made my decision that I didnt really enjoy it. That isnt to say that it had no good moments. I had plenty of times where I was engaged with it but unfortunately a lot more times where I was thinking about how I want this section to be skipped in favor of something more interesting, specifically in hueco mundo, and in (forgive me not recalling the name if its wrong) fake katakuri town.
Now to touch back onto my first sentence of the previous paragraph I found that I didnt really like most of the cast in the Bleach anime. Almost all of them did not land on me. Ichigo, Ulquiorra, and aizen were about the only ones that truly would make it on my list of characters I was fascinated edge of my seat viewing for. That being the case my attention towards the series was minimal. A lot of the deeper meanings of the series went over my head (not all). I knew I had to of missed something due to how different I view the series compared to one of my good friends. So I went to youtube to see why people love the show so damn much. What I found was shocking. People talk about all the "hidden" meanings and the messages that get told behind the surface. They talk about it as if it were so obvious and youd be a fool to not notice these things. While I learned more about the other characters I was stunned because they describe it so much differently than I had just watched of it. What I watched was nothing close to what I was getting told.
Unfortunately as this video has pointed out, the anime is simply a bad adaptation of the source material. I know that not everyone needs a lot of good characters to fall in love with a show, obviously since a lot of people swear by this adaptation, including my good friend who didn't read the manga. But I really do need to fall in love with the cast and for me bleach fell VERY short. There were some like kenpachi who I actually started to like more as the series progressed, but my notion of the character was already established in my head by the time he became more interesting that I wasnt able to really get attached.
I will eventually get to the manga someday because I need to see for myself what the fanbase is talking about and why they die by this series. As of now I can only give the anime a 7/10 due to the reasons listed above. Hopefully the manga makes me more of a fan of the characters but it might be hard since I already have my notions of the characters. I am just going to trust that the manga will be so different that itll be like a whole different cast of characters and ill fall in love like the rest of the fanbase has.

Feels like give or take for me. On some cases I don't agree on the anime decisions, at other times I don't agree with Kubo's base decisions with the manga. For one the TYBW for example has really ramped up the shit talking to oddball levels, to the sort where it feels like it's trying to replicate a cheesy action movie. Like despite being a war, it gives the impression of being some 'Rule of Cool' contest. Not I'm not saying that saying that 'none' needs to be involved, but it's a comparison total to earlier arcs in the manga that always just scratched me weird, considering the context. I think the best example I can make is that it feels like a '1-Up' contest over the other, especially when showcasing their abilities in that 'but actually' format for a good chunk of battles.
Then there's the topic of Orihime and that 'crybaby' persona. I'll give you the early arcs omitting a fun deal of her personality. Though, the further we go on like Post SS, that energy gets muted out, understandably from circumstances, but also losing a lot of that charm even when she does get her high moments. I feel like that one instance where Ichigo got thrust into Vasto Lorde and in both the anime and manga where 'Kurosaki-kun' got shot out nonstop might've popped the poor girl into meme status, so a lot of other details get overlooked.
There was also that bit in the earlier arcs of the manga that showed possessiveness with her too. Like some conversations they shared where Orihime didn't really want Ichigo to take his protector role, and in the bigger scheme, how that importance that he remains safe no matter what holds pivotal. Looking back at it, it was weird in a interesting way to me, like how two kind natures have rapidly different approaches of showcasing it, and thinking how it goes best. With it's own Pros and Drawbacks, I wish that didn't get swept under the rug.
That said. I think filler is just a sacrifice all long running manga just have to eat up. It keeps revenue going to some capacity and back then, we didn't have things like mobile games or other means to help cover the balance. While being a manga purist is fine, I think context matters as to why some of these things are what they are. That said, the 'pure vision' should be experienced too for people to give a fair judgement. Though! That ultimately comes down to preference, some people just love seeing the live movement on the big screen more.
Thanks for the vid to spark some discussion all around.

Here's my take: I believe that we need filler---or at least filler that helps us understand the story better. The reason as to why the TYBW is adored by so many (besides the gorgeous art and animation of course), is due to making things make so much more sense.
For instance, let's look at Yhwach meeting Aizen. This is such a great decision, because in the manga Yhwach just says "I went to go meet Aizen while you were fighting my clone," and then just kills him.
However, the anime actually shows us their conversation. This adds so much more suspense to the story, and that also helps Aizen's character and our out look on his beliefs and ideals. It makes more sense, and it gives you the feel of "Oh. This dude's the real shit."
Things like that are why filler can be so helpful to the story, because you actually understand things you don't understand in the manga.
That being said, the 2004 anime usually does that, but in a very fucking bad way😅
Like you mentioned, DBZimran points out how the anime depicted Orihime as a shy damsel in distress who shouts Kurosaki Kun all the damn time. (I adore Orihime, but am I wrong?)
The manga portrays Orihime as a realistic ray of hope, rising above the smoldering embers and doing whatever she can to help others in need. She also has a goal to be able to fight alongside Ichigo, because she absolutely hates having to be saved. She also quite obviously loves Ichigo, but she's so more realistic and relatable in the manga. No one just gets bumped down by mistake and then just RUNS OFF😂
But that's the biggest problem in the anime, a lot of characters are a lot more unrealistic and careless in the anime, whereas in the manga, people's goals are far more fleshed out, and people are actually understandable (not that all of them are this way, but you get my point)
You did make amazing points in this comment, and you seem really smart, so I just wanted to give you my take on this

But after the anime ended and then the manga i gave it a read and... i guess the show traumatized me with dislike of Orihime that i just now realized how different she actually is. At least the new season is amazing thus far and i almost trust that the rest will be amazing including the needed "fix" for the ending.

FACTS. I personally am Manga over Anime for Bleach, but that by no means says that the anime is bad. It's quite enjoyable and fun to watch. Yes it's riddled with filler and abhorrent pacing, but there is good in the previous anime.
There are moments in the anime that I prefer to the manga. For instance, the Ichigo vs Ulquiorra fight. Yes it was censored, but it also made Vasto Lorde a badass! Idk what it is, but it was personally one of my favorite fights in Anime history hands down.
Again, I feel the Bleach manga is leagues ahead of the 2004 anime, but the anime is quite good in some aspects.

Today you can skip the fillers by using a filler guide (though some fillers were good) or just use bleach super cut if pacing is an issue (its not bad pacing except for the middle segment of arrancar arc). Though it was censored to some degree it seemed inconsistent, where one scene they can show boobs at full content and even blood and then the next thing they censors some side boobs you can barely see or small blood cuts.
12:20 it can be skipped with a filler guide as it will tell if something got mixed fillers and where to skip (this is not just in bleach, but all the other shounen animes at the time too suffered from mixed fillers and censorship). Those modified soul characters only appear for some few seconds which isn't a big deal (as people know what modified souls is at this point), though I agree its a stupid decision for it to be there.
You forgot that the anime also added additional scenes and even expanded on stuff, there is even an anime canon episode which gave harribel a background story which the manga didn't. Overall I agree there are more negatives compared to positive, but the original anime (2004) is worth watching for everything else it got. However its faster to read up and catch the Tybw anime, than to watch 200 episodes of the original.

Personally, I don’t think it’s near as bad as people make out it to be because I happen to like the arc. As much as I enjoy reading the manga, I still rewatch the OG anime mostly because I like listening to Japanese VAs. And I never found Orihime annoying like other people do especially when she spams the word “Kurosaki” to Ichigo. While I do understand the criticisms when it came to the anime, I don’t think it’s near as bad as people pretend. So that’s just how I feel and why I never hated the filler arcs.

  • @Rafa-Silva-Alt

But back then censorship and fillers have plagued almost every anime adaptation. And even not filler parts had a lot of padding and recaps. The anime team had questionable decisions, but made the best they could at that moment.
They couldn't simply stop the anime and lose momentum and the precious time slot, They had to keep it going even with the worst of the episodes.
Some fillers actually make a lot of sense, chronologically speaking (not the zanpakuto rebellion and new captain arc) and help to detail certain plot points, let some stuff sink better and present some mildly decent story points and eventually some very good moments or characters.
They also improved a lot the quality of the wrting of the fillers later and considering the narrative style of Bleach with few huge arcs, they had done a decent job. The filler is annoying but never to the point to make me want to drop the series. Naruto had much worse fillers.

It's funny, Bleach was the very first anime I had ever seen that I KNEW was an anime. It's the most nostalgic show I probably have in my mind.
Ironically, it is also the show that made me want to start reading manga, starting with this one. And when I did, I noticed the differences immediately. Somehow, though because I did this early on in my watch of the show (like right before Soul Society arc), reading and watching it at the same time somehow improved my view of the show 😕 LOL maybe my mind was subconsciously adding the parts that the manga had, into the anime scenes I later watched. My anticipation of fights/moments I had seen in the manga months before made my experience seeing them in anime better. It's the best book AND TV moments I've ever had, surprisingly.
Having said that, I was also very young LOL doing that again as an adult, I realize the differences ALOT more now. I always knew the censorship was because of network maintenance back then, so I never really blamed it for that, but I DO blame it for alot of the changes made that affected the overall look at some of the characters and plots. And it made me sad. I never realized why Bleach got so much hate after it was stopped in 2012 until now, but after rewatching and rereading, I do now. TYBW is a God send, because it has SEVERELY changed the rep of Bleach for the better. And I'm happy about it. Bleach is my favorite manga of all time, and my second favorite anime despite everything I just said 🤣 but the reason why it's not my #1 favorite anime IS because of everything I just said. If it was adopted more faithfully, I have no doubt it would be everyone's favorite.

After TYBW Cour 1’s release, I decided to revisit Bleach. We lost the drive with the anime so I just picked up the manga.
When I tell you how blown away I was by the difference it had from the anime! It actually angers me so much thinking about all the information and detail I was robbed of because the anime adapted them out or twisted them to make a new narrative. Thinking about how Karin had been the one to meet Ichigo in his bedroom, begging him to run which incited his (deep-rooted, trauma-based) hero complex and prompted him to break out of the kido spell to save Yuzu.
I’m actually surprised 7-year-old me liked IchiOri more than IchiRuki although only being an Anime watcher. I was also informed very early on about fillers, so I understood certain arcs weren’t canon and was sad back then that some characters weren’t canon (my thoughts definitely changed now that I’m older and wiser).
Bleach continues to be my biggest fixation for being one of my first animanga. The manga just made me fall in love with it even more. I’m so glad Kubo gets to help in the production of TYBW now, so the characterisation, storytelling and pacing won’t be as bad as its 2004 counterpart.
