The captain of the Hapag-lloyd ship is now driving a taxi in Chicago
Someone will always cut you off, no matter what you drive lol
The ship was like "Bitch you looking at my cargo. Ill fuck you up"
This collision was caused by interaction between the ships, where as one ship passes the other in a channel, a lower pressure between the hulls, caused by their proximity to each other, draws them together. It is only avoidable by keeping a reasonable distance apart of at least 1/2 mile. Rudder action becomes useless and will not overcome the forces of attraction. Many ship collisions have been caused in this way in channels. The way to avoid this is not to try and overtake and keep a reasonable distance apart when passing head on.
So THAT'S what happened to those priceless relics I ordered from Cairo last week...
My comment was a sarcastic joke. You're probably 12 and can't find Cairo on a map, given the utterly nonsensical nature of your name. Do us all a favor and get lost.
Alright - I normally don't pay any mind to ignorant people like you, but, I figured that I'd try to turn this little discourse into a learning experience for you - do pay attention.
I don't have a "dad." My father, as in the man whose sperm fertilized an egg of my mother's in order to create me, is a pedophile, drug addict, drug distributor, and convicted felon. When I was a young child, he abused me physically and sexually, as well as stole thousands of dollars from my mother and from trust funds set up in my name by my grandparents. The last time I saw him was by court order on Christmas Day, 1996. Since then, I have not heard from or of him again, with the exception of two occasions - once in 1999 when a woman, who was also victimized by him, made contact with my mother to share her similar story of manipulation and abuse, and once again in 2009, when I received correspondence from the Florida State Prosecutor's Office alerting me that he had been arrested on charges of aggravated stalking and drug possession and was awaiting transfer to a federal prison to serve what may turn out to be a 20+ - year sentence.
Whoever you are, young, old, of better faculties or not, you should know that you don't know the story of anybody you meet in life, nor of anybody whose alias you see online. Everyone on this Earth is a real person with a story, with dreams, and with things they hold dear, and all those things of theirs are just as true and while as your own. Remember that.
haha
And why would they ship it through the canal?????
Boy
both captains were trying to get home before dinner
Haha nice brother
really? Some people have valid comments. Some say crap like this. Go comment on MASH videos and chat about Radar all you want.
***** OK
WORST CASE OF CANAL RAGE I HAVE EVER SEEN
lol XD
Only Suez Canal Authority, authorizes overtaking in the canal. Also, the transit is made using an convoy system, clearly regulated by the same authority through Rules of Navigation , and all ships must have pilot on board. So, Colombo Express violated several rules which were in force in that area.
so thats why my package was squished.
I never saw him, your honour, he just seemed to come from nowhere. Then he pulled out in front of me. It all happened so fast, your honour...
Hapag Lloyd VS Maersk. Suez racing team (SRT)
The overtaking ship is obliged to stay clear so, whatever the cause, it's her fault.
She was faring straight, for a legal takeover. Then suddenly, the bow of the black ship get caught in the suction flow of the larger blue ship. This is not an unfamiliar issue with large ships. The Olympic class was plagued by this problem with several collisions caused by the suction of the props. The Titanic in fact ripped a ship off its moorings in the same way.
Larger ship attempts to overtake on the right, smaller ship is like "nuh uh" and step son the gas, game of chicken ensues, both captains win/lose
Steven King Can't say I disagree with you there. Have a nice day.
Sorry I was in a bad mood. Not your problem. Have a good day. I liked the video, thanks! I love the UK. Beautiful country BTW.
+forgotaboutbre If so, then both ignored/defied Rules of the Road. Overtaken ship (ROW vessel) maintains course and speed till overtaking ship is clear ahead. Overtaking ship (burdened vessel) maintains course and speed till overtaken ship is clear behind. Hapag-Lloyd clearly violated here. Why he turned left before passing clear escapes all logic. It's not like he didn't see him or know he was there. This guy should be fired and tried.
Just my POV as experienced sailor there.
J Cherubini I think the ship on the right was about to run aground and needed to swing hard left to stay in the channel, which makes his passing attempt even crazier
Bak. Derk-derk-Allah. Derka derka, Mohammed Jihad. Haka sherpa-sherpa. Abaka-la
It all happened so fast, I didn't even have time to blink! lol Just kidding...
This is what happens when your texting ! ! !
That's what happens when you drink too much and fall asleep at the helm :-)
"Wallah, wallah, wallah, wallah, wallah, wallah, wallah, wallah, wallah"
Oops didn't see that other comment...
Deleting it is quicker and easier than typing a comment that doesn't make you look any less of an idiot than you already are.
Having just gone through the Suez Canal this year, the rule ONE nautical mile between ships and no overtaking. It's as simple as that.
maybe a problem with the steering motor. it happens occassionally, even on this modern ships.
What is amazing is the Video shows by the Prop Wash neither Ship backing down.
i can't be absolutely sure about this but i think the ship turned as the canal narrowed and got caught by the other ships suction.
+thelfinion If he turned because he meant to claim the interposition of an obstacle, which would be legal, then a court would contest his decision to commit to a course which would necessitate a course change before he had pulled clear. This is entirely Hapg-Lloyd's fault in this case. Either he's arrogant or just inept, but he's NOT a capable ship captain and ought to be removed.
at 1:55 the ship turned!
Ventura effect, the two ships got caught into an area of low pressure from the displacement of the ships.
You are correct. However I think he cut it hard so not run her aground. He shouldn't have been overtaking like that in the first place.
how the hell did this happen???????
+Chris lawton I have answered this elsewhere.
The first captain was as far right as he dared because there was a shallow patch to the right.
The second captain overtook on the wrong side. Oblivious to the danger he was creating.
When he reached the shallow patch the water pressure builds up under his vessel.
Firstly at the front and more strongly on the shallower side.
Which pushes the vessel into a turn far more powerfully than any rudder could ever do. The turn was obviously very sharp for a container ship at any speed.
From that point on it was "all over red rover".
Incidentally you note that the other captain had put on full power to attempt to clear the collision. He MAY have tried to turn right to mitigate it but this would have led to a grounding of his own ship.
He could not have stopped in that distance. Even with full power full astern.
Not a great lot of options for him.
+Chris lawton Passed on the right.
They misunderstood the turning circle looolz Plus u never overtake like that. Hapag should have lowered speed and pass on theyr port or not overtake at all
it amazes me that the earth is mostly sea and these 2 still manage to crash into one another
Its like NASCAR....if you ain't rubbing, you're not racing.
Just one more example of the ever bad results of "hold my beer, and watch this!"
someone is either drunk or asleep, or both
captain to captain "last one to the pub shouts"
Maresk and Hapag are at it again, gotta stop these container ship drag races in the Suez.
that wasn't a "collision " that was water rage..
Looks like somebody didn't check their blind spot when passing.
Ships that pass in the night, only it wasn,t night and they didn,t pass.
Apparently the one on the right experienced some sort of rudder problem. Did they even attempt to reverse the engines or warn the other ship? I didn't hear any horns or anything.
maybe the captain and the crew of the blue ship is dreaming ...
I don't think it was a rudder problem, it was an effect known as bank effect. The pressure around the ship caused it to sheer off. Ships also don't stop in short distances and in some cases take miles to stop.
James 123 Good Captain & Officers must know that,i was Officer on Merchant ships..and this Container and RO-RO ships are worst for sailing, ppl think Tankers and LNG are dangerest but i always like more them and Bulk carriers than Containers Vessels !
I also wonder why no horns were blowing
PJMontoya
They were in a no horn zone. :p
this was either a steering malfunction or just plain impatience. narrow channel large ships like this should not be trying to overtake each other.
Guess he didn't have that new "blindspot detection"... oooopsies
Crazy captain ... overtake and then chicago turn by pulling the handbrake works only by cars
Officer, it was just a moment.
that's how little boats are born
Ma chi è che portava il timone? Topolino? Come diamine si fa a schiantarsi con così tanto spazio a disposizione?!? Bah....
WHY THE HELL does newsflare* have to be IN MY FACE?
NEWS FLASH/FLARE jumping all over the video!!! Five minutes that I won't get back!!!
If you ain't rub'n you ain't rac'n!
The vessel on the left should have given the larger vessel more room to manoeuver. The larger vessel perhaps had sudddenly realised that being fully laden it was about to run out of water hence the sudden turn to port. I don't know but that's what it looks like to me.
You had one job! ONE JOB!!
I hope there all right!!
Okay Newsflare, we get it, you want your watermark on the vid.
But please, from now on attack that shit to one of the corners and stop it from bouncing around.
It's more annoying than Lensflare.
+ZDson3112 It was there prior to video stabilization being used......
Looks like the captians of the ship have anger issues
it is caused by a suction from shallow water. it causes lost of control. the pilot should have reduced power and allow the suction to stop its hold on ships control
capt gerry
Looks like container ship is overtaking to starboard, and got into thin water. Then he opted for a collision as he careened back into the channel, rather than go aground.. Maybe he thought he could bounce off with a bank cushion.
Unnecessarily obtrusive onscreen logo.
Ladies and Gentlemen: Surely, by now there has been an official investigation of this debacle and a maritime court has assesed blame and what compensation is due for whom. Does anybody know how to find the case and the results? That certainly would put an end to all the speculation.
And this is why we cant have nice things
Did the driver leave a note for insurance purposes?
Now they have to exchange insurance info and wait for the cops to show up.
Road rash (Ship version)
Those two ships have been fighting since they were little rowboats.
same......and that is why he did it on purpose...
you sir are awesome
you sir are awesome
hahaha
xD
Maybe the captain couldn't see because of the newsflare was in his line of sight.
I am the captain now
The floating logo is the most annoying thing ever seen
+Jam Kesten it was a very shaky video, so they stabilized the video and the watermark is what is left of the shaky video
+Jam Kesten 100 i am :D
This accident happened probably because the ships were running away from the floating logo
Like, you couldn't keep the watermark in the bottom corner you got to keep shaking it in our faces, wtf man
i know one thing. I will never ever visit newsflare, that overlay shit is nearly seizure inducing
+TheXanUser Newsflare have a static watermark on their website,. On RUclips they have a moving watermark to deter people from copying and uploading as their own and profiting from other peoples work.
+TheXanUser Thanks. I puked but didn't know why 'til I saw this comment.
+TheXanUser LMAO. Agreed
This could have been the lost Top Gear Big Ship Challenge where Richard Hammond was in the lead and Jeremy Clarkson tried to overtake him on the right. POWERRRR!!!
How hard can it be?
Don't say that!
Jamie Causon ...and on that bombshell, back to the studio!
KlunkerRider this comment made my day!
Sanctions s***
Some say .... The Stig was driving ?
turns out collisions of massive objects are pretty boring
When there moving at a snails pace.
A vessel, in many cases while transiting a narrow channel, will steer itself due to the pressure wave created between the hull underwater and the shallow sides. In this case, a very foolish pilot and complacent captain overtook the Maersk vessel too fast and the hull pressure between the two ships caused the bow of the Hapag vessel to push starboard into the shallow bank and the bank pressure wave pushed the Hapag bow sharply back to port and into the Maersk vessel.
Wind has minimal affect on the vessels while making way due to the 25' to 35' draft. In my opinion, 90% of the blame falls to the Hapag pilot and 10% to the Hapag captain for not punching his pilot out for considering to overtake another vessel in a cramped seaway with such disparity in speed. The Maersk vessel is 100% clear as there was nothing they could do to minimize and risk.
I would love to hear another captains qualified opinion on this incident.
I'm not a captain, per se, but I spent a 20-year career as a US Naval officer, with a lot of it at sea. Your thoughts and mine fairly well coincide, sir.
The Maersk-er could've sounded short blasts to "wake up," the people on the Hapag's bridge to the fact that they were standing into danger.
Btw, don't they have Bridge-to-Bridge radios?
navy57 These Captains get tremendous pressure to make up time or be on time. But now it looks like at least one has lost their job...
navy57 Oh it's true, I've watch several documentary's and time is money. But maybe there was some ego involved here, someone forgot that the main concern should always be the safety of the ship. Speed limits, sure but these 2 slugs weren't speeding.
navy57 correct procedure. Maersk captain out of order, should not have placed himself in this situation.
TheBigWWI pressure smessure. he fucked his career!
"Walawalawalawala" ... yeah, just what I was thinking too.
Sea Rage . . .
All that space and they *still* run into each other
Since they're coming out of port it's too shallow to travel through it except for the one area they were in. This is because of the size of the ships, they must follow the canal.
Mike Hawk Allegedly old Captain Farwell, the author of "Farwell's Nautical Rules of the Road" said that whenever two vessels occupy the same body of water, risk of collision exists. Don't know if he actually said that, but seamen everywhere appear to be proving him correct. This fiasco was pretty strong supporting evidence of it.
Mike Hawk That is no space at all. These ships handle very badly. Lets take a oil tanker for a example. 3 nm apart is a near miss to them, considering theyir turn radius is up to 0.8 nm and it takes up to 4.5 nm to stop it (a absolute minimum of 20 minutes). Ofcause these handle a little better, but still, it takes closer to a century to learn to sail like that. This is an example of a human error, propably a small fault by the navigator messuring the dephts
Mike Hawk the crew didn't reverse thrust in time to slow her down
+navy57 - Well, da!
This is what happens when you sleep with a another Captain's wife!
So do they just exchange insurance info and continue on?
+MrMikey1224 They had to wait for the traffic patrol to come. lol
+MrMikey1224 lmao
It takes advanced skill to crash a freakin' container ship :D
It was planned⁉️⁉️😮😯😳😳
That "newsflare" watermark is like an annoying misquitoe buzzing in your face saying "look at me, look at my advertising, SPAMMED YOU BITCH!"...it's really annoying.
I wonder if the one ship yelled "Allahu Akbar"! seconds before the crash?
racist !
Bill Randolph actually that is my real name, so i m supposed to be a 'fucktard' according to you... however, before calling over 1.5 billion human beings fucktards i would suggest you get to know some of them first or even get to know what you seems to be hating so much, and btw i got nothing to hide here and if i m truly ashamed of the doings of some muslims doest mean i m ashamed of my beliefs
ahmed said So in other words you are a complete bitch?
Bow cushion and bank suction effect:
Occurs in narrow channels near proximity of banks.
There is a tendency for the bow of a ship to be pushed away from the bank, called bow cushion.
The ship moves bodily towards the bank, which appears at the stern, called bank suction.
Caused by the restricted flow of water on the bank's side.
Velocity of water to the bank increases and pressure reduces.
Results in drop of water level towards the bank.
As a result, a thrust is set up towards bank.
A vessel approaching to the bank will have to apply helm to the bank and reduce speed to prevent the sheer from developing.
Looking at the direction of the chimney stack exhaust this give a clue as to where the wind was blowing with respect to the two giant ships. Well it look as as if the wind reflected off the blue ship and this accelerated so that there was a low pressure zone between the two ships which sucked them together,
It seemed to have happened all of a sudden , fancy that the pilots seemed to have been caught unaware of the phenomena. I wonder!
So... uhm, what happens next? Do you pull over and exchange insurance details?
Very annoying watermark.
Back in the Day(1960's) we used to pass through the Canal in Convoys with no overtaking. Why is everyone in such a hurry these days.
The official accident was reported that the captain forgot to check his rearview mirrors when changing lanes
Nothing spilled. I wanted to see wreckage. Destruction. Flames. One of them should have exploded!
Jason Wolffe Well then....
+Jason Wolffe I think u watching to mutch movie sir .
+Jason Wolffe See if there's a Michael Bay edition
you are an idiot you know that their lucky that their ships didn't sink
Oh darn! Hope they haven't damaged all the crap I was planning to buy from Walmart!
2:48 walalallalalallalalalalallalalallalalalalalalalala! La.
what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck! Fuck.
unwatchable because of the text bouncing around the screen
wallah wallah wallah molie molie molie molie
Actually they were saying Walah meaning hey kid not wallah
Soma noma Wow...you honestly thought I was serious.....???? I guess some jokes just go right over ppls heads. Besides, you're being nitpicky as fuck over one letter of the alphabet. You should seriously start getting out of the house and working on your social skills.
utoobube
No I didn't think you were being serious I just thought I might shed light on the matter especially that the other word means something else
Walah means hey kid or just hey or watch out
Wallah means I swear
yeah, ok. LMAO! I really don't give a shit what either one means...pretty stupid language if you ask me.
+utoobube ...LOL ...
**female robot voice**
"Warning...you are on a collision course... warning... wake up idiot... warning ffs !"
who will be the one will take the marlboro cigarette..
wadda wadda wadda wadda
Blame on the blind spot :D
next time, take the Panama Canal :)
Thoughts on how this could have happened: Both ships have port (left) rudder to keep the ships going straight with a strong cross wind blowing port (left) to starboard (right). The port (left) rudder is needed to keep the bows, which have no rudder, from blowing starboard (to the right) in the strong cross wind. Then the Colombo Express overtakes the Maersk Tanjong on the Maersk Tanjong's leeward (downwind) side, the wind shadow created by the Colombo Express suddenly releases the wind side load off of the Colombo Express. Thus the bow now comes port since the ship has port rudder to counter the port starboard wind. Once the large ship starts its port (left) turn it is too late, even putting full starboard (right) rudder will not stop the turn in time before the ships collide. It sounds fairly windy in the video and these huge tankers would have a tremendous amount of side wind load in a cross wind. I have never driven one but being a captain of smaller ships for years I have had similar experiences.
Makes hella good sense to me mate!
Sure its not bank effect?
Very interesting, thanks for sharing!
No, the turn to port was too extreme to be caused by wind shadow from the smaller ship. You can also see where the larger ship was backing down hard. Either there was a failure in the steering or they found themselves too close to the bank and about to go aground. Turning hard to port to avoid the shallows but then unable to turn back to starboard to avoid the collision due to decreased speed and rudder being ineffective even with forward motion when the ships props are in reverse.
the wind doesnt look to be from port to stbd......you can look at the flags in the beginning of the video
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't notice you there."
wlaa walla walla walla
valla valla valla vallaa :v
great sound--- I now know how to say '' Holy Sh*t'' in Arabic. This could come in handy when you're looking at cartoon drawings of that Mohammed guy.
There's something very fishy about this......it's almost as if it was done on purpose
Law19157 yeah it looked more like what the pirates do when they don't get the ransom for the ships that they have hijacked
Insurance fraud you say.
well not really insurance fraud. it just looked as if it were done on purpose. no idea why they did it yhough.
+Law19157 yes.. the boat on right turned, then boat on left turned..
*I WAS HOPING FOR A EXPLOSION!*
+Law19157 It was all an inside job!
So how Mich damage in dollars do you think that cost honestly?. The impact was very slow, but the weight was massive.
Wonder how many idiots were fired for that
I didn't realize ships were allowed to go around each other in the canal. That's just crazy.
If you read the report it was rudder failure. Eight containers went overboard.
+jazzman9 A "sudden rudder failure" causing the ship to veer off course?
Given that it had been going straight.
This is as plausible as "temporary insanity".
However I have had the same thing happen to a flat bottomed canoe.
Ship travelling fast reaches a shallow patch and the water pressure underneath causes ship to suddenly change direction. Without responding to the rudder because the area of water under pressure is enormous.
Which means that choosing to pass in this way was irresponsible.
The ship ahead knew the channel and was as far right as the captain dared go.

The black ship was trying to race around the blue one.
dang it who let Tony Drive again
Did the Hapag-Loyd ship lose her steering gear? I cannot believe that there was such a catastrophic misjudgement of turning abilty otherwise.
I'm just curious to know who was the genius piloting the ship on the right.
two multi-thousand ton ships; one barely- evolved human brain....result?....an impossible collision becomes possible.
