Most of the fishing action during our float trips will consist of nymphing multiple fly rigs under an indicator or casting streamers on the bank, which is one of the most exciting ways to entice the larger browns in this section of river. Although we fish out of the boat during our float trips, we also get out and wade fish the most productive runs. The fishing is great year-round, but it’s especially good from late March through early November. The Colorado is a productive, versatile river, so every month has something to offer!
In the spring, anglers can expect to see reliable hatches of midges and Blue-Winged Olives. As the season progresses, caddis and stoneflies become an important food source for the trout. The infamous salmonfly hatch usually happens towards the end of May into early June, which happens to coincide with our runoff. Water flows are a major influence on this hatch, which can make timing the hatch extremely difficult. Throughout the summer, other mayfly hatches include PMDs, Red Quills, Drakes and Tricos (late summer/early fall). Yellow Sallies (smaller stoneflies) and Terrestrial action takes off towards the end of July, making hoppers, ants, and beetles all productive flies to fish. Aquatic worms, eggs, and streamer patterns are also great choices throughout the year on the Colorado.
Our float trips cover all necessary equipment, including flies, leaders, waders. During COVID we are NOT providing lunches, so please plan accordingly. Gratuity and a Colorado fishing license is NOT included in the cost.
