I use to be in a band that got to play in a talent showcase that Mark Spicoluk was running. He gave us a lot of advice and was a pretty chill guy. I had no idea who he was at first, until my band mate mentioned he was Avril's bass player. Was pretty wild at the time.
Closet monster was not an emo band, knowing both mark and Jessie personally and working with closet monster doing several shows and helping book tours with them. They were possiblely the nicest guys in Canadian punk and insanely hard workers traveling hours for 50 bucks just to play.
I'm familiar with Evan Taubenfeld. I remember downloading his album back in 2010 and I still listen to a couple tracks every now and then. Had no idea he was associated with Avril Lavigne. You learn something new every day.
I’m so glad someone did this video! That’s also a question that I ask myself often and I always think it’s too niche to talk about IRL 😂 Evan and Avril were indeed best friends, they have a song together called “Best years of our lives” which talks about… well, you know, their friendship. It’s kinda cute.
To be a good researcher and historian, you have to ask the odd, obscure questions no one else would. I have zero interest in Avril (I’m an old school punk and subbed when you dropped your Minor Threat video), know of the song, never saw the music video, and I watched your entire video with interest so 👍🏽
If mark didn't do a&r for gene Simmons, The Envy would have never been a band gene signed. I ended up playing bass for them on tour opening for Kiss and Motley Crüe. I met Matt on disband the much music show with my other band when he worked with greig nori from treble charger. The Amazing part of it all is how connected the Canadian music community was without even knowing. If you'd like to talk about this and solve more pieces of the puzzle feel free to get in touch. Thanks for posting this. 👍🤘
*_Evan was Avril’s secret weapon. As soon as he left, her albums got significantly worse. I think a lot of people forget the dark ages of Avril records (Goodbye Lullaby/Self-Titled)._*
It's is definitely Evan in the "Complicated" video. I have his solo album but it's a different version than what was released. Also met him once. Super nice dude.
As someone who was a massive Avril fangirl in those days, I have a lot of nostalgia for these guys as they were around her when i was a big fan. So I already knew most of this but this was fairly accurate and well researched. Yeah, her and Evan used to be very close (not so much anymore it seems) he cowrote some songs in her 2nd 3rd and 4th album. He has also cowritten some songs for other artists but seems to be more into the business side of things working as an a&r guy after his solo music career didn't take off. That's definitely him in the Complicated video, don't know why anyone would say it's Jesse 😂
While on the topic of sort of lesser known band members from the 00's, it would be GREAT if you could do a video or dig into what happened with the other 2 members in +44: Shane Gallagher & Craig Fairbaugh. If you were able to find out about Avril's first band mates, maybe you can see what is up with them lately. Or better yet a video with info on the other members of blink-182-adjacent projects would be cool too
The timing of this video- JUST YESTERDAY I was looking at p*rn on my alt Twitter and saw these guys in a photo, the same one used in the thumbnail and I watched this music video nonstop as a kid and in the middle of stroking, I stopped and actually did wonder what happened to those guys. I assumed they were actors though, not her real band. Fascinating how things happen.
No exaggeration, I was thinking about exactly all of this about a few weeks back. I remember as teen taking a bit of notice of them, seeing that they were the same people in her live performances of that time, so I must've thought "okay they're a real backing band". I guess that curiosity caught up with me weeks ago.
The bad executivez tried to push her into a folky type of music, but she felt more like Tony hawk with socks on her arms, then the Keanu Reeves came in her and let her write whatever she wanted and she wrote "complicated"! A cute lil folky ditty! Huzzah! Punx not Fred!
I just started the video and wanted to make a prediction before watching the rest. They're either just session musicians or they're actors who don't actually play instruments.
He talked about that in a Reddit ama that I read. Can’t remember exactly what he said, but it sounds like it was something that just randomly happened and went directions he never planned on
I think it’s a bit different. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts at the end. Seems like these guys were always hired as a backing band and stayed as long as they wanted
In the scene we all still think she was never really even good, and played country in coffee houses before she got famous, so we still think her whole story is just to back her being an industry plant, that had nothing to do with punk or the Canadian punk scene. Closet Monster sucks and aren't really anarchist or whatever btw. They're all posers. Thank you for confirming my suspicions that they were all hired to make her look cool. Great video well researched.
Avril's retroactively recognized as being apart of the pop-punk scene but really she was cut from the same cloth as Nickelback and Puddle Of Mudd, It's that same kind of heavily produced Post-Grunge radio rock but I think she did it better than a lot of her contemporaries. Nowhere near punk and obviously not the most authentic, But that scene wasn't known for authenticity anyway.
@@PuddleOfPizza she never made punk or pop punk so saying that people recognize her for it is worse. She and everything about that whole thing is just a pose. She is and always will be a poser.
Maybe but I think it’s an it different. Avril was the only one ever signed, the guys were just hired as musicians. So it’s not like they were ever actually a band or marketed that way
I don't even believe the girl we saw performing live on the first album cycle is the same woman were looking at today. Not saying she dead, but theres an imposter both doing interviews since the mid 00s and doing live shows. its weird and creepy. Not the first artist to do that also...
These are exactly the kind of random things I think about, great video!
Thank you!
I was not expecting a Periphery name drop! Evan with Matt is just mind-blowing to me. Great video!
Time stamp?

From all I saw, he seems like a pretty good dude
Omg, thanks for using my video!!!
You should talk about Closet Monster more because they are amazing.
Closet monster was not an emo band, knowing both mark and Jessie personally and working with closet monster doing several shows and helping book tours with them. They were possiblely the nicest guys in Canadian punk and insanely hard workers traveling hours for 50 bucks just to play.
YOU SAID IT WOULDNT WORKKKKKKK!! Closet monster rips dude. Mama anti is still on youtube
And...super far-left. Politically
"Nicest guys in Canadian Punk" must mean they were REALLY nice
This channel is quickly becoming one of my favorite music channels
Love that - thanks for watching!

Nice video! I have been asking myself this so it's nice to see someone else talking about it. It would be cool if they did a reunion
thanks for doing this i whas wondering this aswell
I'm a vegan who follows Boho Beautiful but didn't even know about this connection. How cool! Thanks for sharing this deep dive.
Great video! It’s super well put together and the editing’s great. You totally deserve more subs!
Thank you!

None of these guys played on the actual album though.
your image at 1:36 says that she was born in 1982, she was actually born in 1984.
Thank you! This is the answer Im looking for!

Great vid man. I go down my own Wikipedia / RUclips rabbit holes myself.
Avril isn't the greatest songwriter but she does have a powerful voice.
Thank you!

Thank you mate for the research! Loved watching it.
Thanks!

It takes a level of sophistication to want to know these things. I'm on board.
A question I never asked myself until I saw this video title. They seem to be all doing pretty well.
I’ve literally thought this so many times, every time I watch an old vid of hers
I’m glad I’m not alone!
I’ve always wondered this too
Excelent question I would have never had, but eagerly would see the answer to it

Thanks for the extra context! Nice to hear from people who were involved and paying attention back then
Great video! We need more of your cat, though
Oh he’ll be around
You are 98% right
this was a cool one
Thanks! I expected it to do poorly but I enjoyed making it

I was wondering the same thing. 🙂
I was a big fan of hers early in her career and did always wonder what happened to those dudes lol.

your revealing too much
You are a deranged individual.
Idc that you went on twitter, what I do care about is the fact you thought that was something you should share?
Just checked out Closet Monster...they are great!
Born in Ontario, that doesn't really narrow it down as Ontario is one-fifth the size of the US 😂😂😂😂

I thought they were actors at the start, too
Didn’t know I cared either but I watched the whole vid lol
Is Efan in the band when Avril cover Metallica's Fuel in MTV Icon Metallica?
Yes.
I still remebered when evan decided to you know what? Imma produce japanese girl band.

Nice
Plz🙏🙏🙏do black flag im a big fan plz
I'm only 30 seconds in, but I can tell you. It's the No Doubt effect. Hey We like your singer, but the rest of you can go pound sand.
I think it’s a bit different. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts at the end. Seems like these guys were always hired as a backing band and stayed as long as they wanted

So technically this is a band put together by the label similar what they call an industry plant nowadays

I saw Closet Monster... With Moneen, and Alexisonfire
Man. Alexisonfire. I forgot about them
